With defending champion Nathaniel Niles unable to compete in singles this year, 1927 silver medalist Roger Turner captured the title, with 1927 junior champion Frederick Goodridge finishing second.

Ladies[edit]
With the absence of defending champion Beatrix Loughran, Maribel Vinson easily won the competition. Following a fourth-place finish at the 1928 Winter Olympics and a silver medal at the 1928 World Figure Skating Championships, Vinson was unanimously judged in first place.

After ten consecutive pairs crowns, Theresa Weld Blanchard and Nathaniel Niles were narrowly defeated by Maribel Vinson and Thornton Coolidge, giving Vinson a pair of gold medals in New Haven.
