Norsk bokmål: Motivet henspeiler på virkelige hendelser i Kristiania på begynnelsen av 1900-tallet, hvor fem pleiemødre hadde kvittet seg med uønskede barn, såkalt englemakeri. Rettssaken startet i september 1901 og alle fem ble funnet skyldige. To av dem ble dømt til livsvarig fengsel. Kunstavisen
English: The motif is based on a trial in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway, in 1901. Five women were on trial for baby farming, two of them were prisoned for life.
