Summary

Description
English: Origins of Tolkien's Mythology up to 1914. His interest in the Elder and Prose Eddas led him to the Finnish Kalevala, and in turn to interest in the languages in which the mythologies were written including Finnish and Welsh. These triggered his construction of languages including what became Quenya and Sindarin. His reading in 1914 of Crist 1 led to Earendel and the first element of his Legendarium, the Silmarillion manuscripts. In 1977 his biographer Humphrey Carpenter dubbed the Legendarium "A mythology for England".
