of stage-coaches made byEaton, Gilbert, & Co., they also man-ufactured omnibuses, for routes in thecities of Boston, New York, Philadel-phia, and Baltimore. In 1841, Eaton& Gilbert began manufacturing rail-road coaches. Shortly afterward thefirm also began making freight-cars.The firm built the first eight-wheelpassenger-cars run on the Schenectadyand Troy Railroad. The growth ofthe business of Eaton, Gilbert, & Co.is seen in the number of cars, omni-buses, and stage-coaches made bythem in 1850: Stage-coaches, 100;omnibuses, 50; passenger-cars, 30;freight-cars, 150. On the afternoonof October 28, 1852, their car shopson Sixth Street were destroyed by fire.In January, 1853, they sold theirproperty on Sixth Street to the UnionRailroad Company, and afterwardoccupied their new buildings on thenorthwest corner of George and Clin-ton streets. Gilbert be-came associated in it with his father,under the firm-name of Uri Gilbert &Son. In August, 1864, a part of thecar-works were burned. New build-ings were erected, and the businessgreatly enlarged. During ihe warabout five hundred gun-carriages forthe United Slates government weremade at the works. In 1S64, the firmof Uri Gilbert & Son was succeededby that of Gilbert, Bush, & Co., theformer partners admitting WalterR. Bush into the business. In 1S67,Edward G. Gilbert and Walter R.Bush, jr., were admitted into thepartnership, and in 1869, L. O. Han-som. In 1S72, the latter withdrew.The firm of Gilbert, Bush, & Co.was succeeded by the Gilbert & BushCompany, on January i, 1879.
