Planning[edit]

Based on Awadewit's suggestion here, this is the organizing page for a podcast discussion of using Wikipedia as a teaching tool, particularly with editing assignments for students.

Interest list[edit]

Logistics[edit]

Later this week might be a good time to hold this discussion. Any preferred times or times that generally don't work?

  • Awadewit: Preferred times: Afternoon and evenings, EST
  • JimmyButler: Unfortunately my work hours are a tad long, 7:00AM - 7:30PM EST; however, if there is an opening I would be delighted to share. If not, then perhaps my students would offer an interesting perspective on such projects. I have two in mind; one that has reached FA and another currently dealing with the frustrations. Both are articulate - both would offer honest insights.

Also, we need someone with podcast experience to do the recording. Volunteers?

Potential times[edit]

  • Tuesday night, March 31/April 1: 00:30 UTC ( 8:30 PM EST; 5:30 PM PST)
    • Works for me.--ragesoss (talk) 20:02, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • Me too. Awadewit (talk) 21:24, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • I'm sorry - As of the 30 of April March my second job starts, which carries me through 9:45 PM. Other than Sunday - I work from 7:00 AM until 9:45 PM. Maybe it is best to count me out - at least until my daughter finishes college four years from now.--JimmyButler (talk) 13:44, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
      • This is 31 March, though. Awadewit (talk) 04:07, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
        • oops - I thought this was April --- working two full time jobs is taking a toll! We start driving from 3:00 - 9:00 Monday (March 30).--JimmyButler (talk) 20:44, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Would it be possible to move it up a couple of hours? I might have interruptions that late in the day. DurovaCharge! 05:09, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • That works for me. I proposed it that late in an attempt to accommodate JimmyButler, but that's moot now. 22:30 UTC March 31?--ragesoss (talk) 05:23, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Topics for discussion[edit]

  • Lazy Virtues: Teaching Writing in the Age of Wikipedia
    • Lazyness
    • Using theory to understand Wikipedia (economic theory, rhetorical theory, other possibilities)
  • Student attitudes to Wikipedia
  • Teacher attitudes to Wikipedia
  • What works, what doesn't and why
  • Sample assignments and the benefits of each to students and to Wikipedia
  • "Home-base" for assignments - on or off wiki?
  • Using wiki software to create assignments apart from Wikipedia
  • whatever you want to discuss

Report on discussion[edit]

I just found out about this discussion. If you had an interesting discussion, perhaps you could include a short report in the Signpost? I think the usefulness of Wikipedia in schools is a topic of wide interest. Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 21:32, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to point to this discussion when we publish the in-progress reviews of Lazy Virtues.--ragesoss (talk) 23:25, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
