On this page, the deletion or merging of templates and modules, except as noted below, is discussed.

How to use this page[edit]

What not to propose for discussion here[edit]

The majority of deletion and merger proposals concerning pages in the template namespace and module namespace should be listed on this page. However, there are a few exceptions:

Stub templates
Stub templates and categories should be listed at Categories for discussion, as these templates are merely containers for their categories, unless the stub template does not come with a category and is being nominated by itself.
Userboxes
Userboxes should be listed at Miscellany for deletion, regardless of the namespace in which they reside.
Speedy deletion candidates
If the template clearly satisfies a criterion for speedy deletion, tag it with a speedy deletion template. For example, if you wrote the template and request its deletion, tag it with {{Db-author}}.
Policy or guideline templates
Templates that are associated with particular Wikipedia policies or guidelines, such as the speedy deletion templates, cannot be listed at TfD separately. They should be discussed on the talk page of the relevant guideline.
Template redirects
List at Redirects for discussion.
Moving and renaming
Use Wikipedia:Requested moves.

Reasons to delete a template[edit]

  1. The template violates some part of the template namespace guidelines, and can't be altered to be in compliance.
  2. The template is redundant to a better-designed template.
  3. The template is not used, either directly or by template substitution (the latter cannot be concluded from the absence of backlinks), and has no likelihood of being used.
  4. The template violates a policy such as Neutral point of view or Civility and it can't be fixed through normal editing.

Templates should not be nominated if the issue can be fixed by normal editing. Instead, you should edit the template to fix its problems. If the template is complex and you don't know how to fix it, WikiProject Templates may be able to help.

Templates for which none of these apply may be deleted by consensus here. If a template is being misused, consider clarifying its documentation to indicate the correct use, or informing those that misuse it, rather than nominating it for deletion. Initiate a discussion on the template talk page if the correct use itself is under debate.

Listing a template[edit]

To list a template for deletion or merging, follow this three-step process. The use of Twinkle (explained below) is strongly recommended, as it automates and simplifies these steps. Note that the "Template:" prefix should not be included anywhere when carrying out these steps (unless otherwise specified).

Step Instructions
I: Tag the template. Add one of the following codes to the top of the template page:

Note:

  • If the template nominated is inline, do not add a newline between the TfD notice and the code of the template.
  • If the template to be nominated for deletion is protected, make a request for the TfD tag to be added, by posting on the template's talk page and using the {{editprotected}} template to catch the attention of administrators or Template editors.
  • For templates designed to be substituted, add <noinclude>...</noinclude> around the TfD notice to prevent it from being substituted alongside the template.
  • Do not mark the edit as minor.
  • Use an edit summary like
Nominated for deletion; see [[Wikipedia:Templates for discussion#Template:name of template]]
    or
Nominated for merging; see [[Wikipedia:Templates for discussion#Template:name of template]].
  • Before saving your edit, preview your edit to ensure the Tfd message is displayed properly.

Multiple templates: If you are nominating multiple related templates, choose a meaningful title for the discussion (like "American films by decade templates"). Tag every template with {{subst:Tfd|heading=discussion title}} or {{subst:Tfm|name of other template|heading=discussion title}} instead of the versions given above, replacing discussion title with the title you chose (but still not changing the PAGENAME code).

Related categories: If including template-populated tracking categories in the TfD nomination, add {{Catfd|template name}} to the top of any categories that would be deleted as a result of the TfD, this time replacing template name with the name of the template being nominated. (If you instead chose a meaningful title for a multiple nomination, use {{Catfd|header=title of nomination}} instead.)

TemplateStyles pages: The above templates will not work on TemplateStyles pages. Instead, add a CSS comment to the top of the page:

/* This template is being discussed in accordance with Wikipedia's deletion policy. Help reach a consensus at its entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2024_June_5#Template:template_name.css */
II: List the template at TfD. Follow this link to edit today's TfD log.

Add this text to the top of the list:

  • For deletion: {{subst:Tfd2|template name|text=Why you think the template should be deleted. ~~~~}}
  • For merging: {{subst:Tfm2|template name|other template's name|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~}}

If the template has had previous TfDs, you can add {{Oldtfdlist|previous TfD without brackets|result of previous TfD}} directly after the Tfd2/Catfd2 template.

Use an edit summary such as
Adding [[Template:template name]].

Multiple templates: If this is a deletion proposal involving multiple templates, use the following:

{{subst:Tfd2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be deleted. ~~~~}}

You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters | ). Make sure to include the same meaningful discussion title that you chose before in Step 1.

If this is a merger proposal involving more than two templates, use the following:

{{subst:Tfm2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|with=main template (optional)|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~}}

You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters | ), plus one more in |with=. |with= does not need to be used, but should be the template that you want the other templates to be merged into. Make sure to include the same meaningful discussion title that you chose before in Step 1.

Related categories: If this is a deletion proposal involving a template and a category populated solely by templates, add this code in the |text= field of the Tfd2 template but before the text of your rationale:

{{subst:Catfd2|category name}}
III: Notify users. Please notify the creator of the template nominated (as well as the creator of the target template, if proposing a merger). It is helpful to also notify the main contributors of the template that you are nominating. To find them, look in the page history or talk page of the template. Then, add one of the following:

to the talk pages of the template creator (and the creator of the other template for a merger) and the talk pages of the main contributors. It is also helpful to make any interested WikiProjects aware of the discussion. To do that, make sure the template's talk page is tagged with the banners of any relevant WikiProjects; please consider notifying any of them that do not use Article alerts.

Multiple templates: There is no template for notifying an editor about a multiple-template nomination: please write a personal message in these cases.

Consider adding any templates you nominate for TfD to your watchlist. This will help ensure that the TfD tag is not removed.

After nominating: Notify interested projects and editors[edit]

While it is sufficient to list a template for discussion at TfD (see above), nominators and others sometimes want to attract more attention from and participation by informed editors. All such efforts must comply with Wikipedia's guideline against biased canvassing.

To encourage participation by less experienced editors, please avoid Wikipedia-specific abbreviations in the messages you leave about the discussion, link to any relevant policies or guidelines, and link to the TfD discussion page itself. If you are recommending that a template be speedily deleted, please give the criterion that it meets.

Notifying related WikiProjects[edit]

WikiProjects are groups of editors that are interested in a particular subject or type of editing. If the article is within the scope of one or more WikiProjects, they may welcome a brief, neutral note on their project's talk page(s) about the TfD. You can use {{Tfd notice}} for this.

Tagging the nominated template's talk page with a relevant Wikiproject's banner will result in the template being listed in that project's Article Alerts automatically, if they subscribe to the system. For instance, tagging a template with {{WikiProject Physics}} will list the discussion in Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Article alerts.

Notifying substantial contributors to the template[edit]

While not required, it is generally considered courteous to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the template and its talkpage that you are nominating for discussion. To find the creator and main contributors, look in the page history or talk page.

At this point, you've done all you need to do as nominator. Sometime after seven days have passed, someone else will either close the discussion or, where needed, "relist" it for another seven days of discussion. (That "someone" may not be you, the nominator.)

Once you have submitted a template here, no further action is necessary on your part. If the nomination is successful it will be added to the Holding Cell until the change is implemented. There is no requirement for nominators to be part of the implementation process, but they are allowed to if they so wish.

Also, consider adding any templates you nominate to your watchlist. This will help ensure that your nomination tag is not mistakenly or deliberately removed.

Twinkle[edit]

Twinkle is a convenient tool that can perform many of the posting and notification functions automatically, with fewer errors and missed steps than manual editing. Twinkle does not notify WikiProjects, although many of them have automatic alerts. It is helpful to notify any interested WikiProjects that don't receive alerts, but this has to be done manually.

Discussion[edit]

Anyone can join the discussion, but please understand the deletion policy and explain your reasoning.

People will sometimes also recommend subst or subst and delete and similar. This means the template text should be "merged" into the articles that use it. Depending on the content, the template page may then be deleted; if preserving the edit history for attribution is desirable, it may be history-merged with the target article or moved to mainspace and redirected.

Templates are rarely orphaned—that is, removed from pages that transclude them—before the discussion is closed. A list of open discussions eligible for closure can be found at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Old unclosed discussions.

Closing discussion[edit]

Administrators should read the closing instructions before closing a nomination. Note that WP:XFDcloser semi-automates this process and ensures all of the appropriate steps are taken.

  • Hmm. If this is unused, it's only because someone substituted all the uses of it. AZBilliards is one of our most frequently cited pool news sources. It may be that we don't need a template for it, if no one's going to use it henceforth, but this used to be used (I know, since I was using it) and I'm not certain this wasn't just mass-subst'd by someone a while back without any discussion (e.g. at WT:CUE).  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  10:57, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds like a very likely scenario. Part of the reason behind this cleanup is to inform template creator's (and other interested parties) that a template that might have been used was removed. Let me know if you plan on reusing it so I'll withdraw my nomination. Gonnym (talk) 11:44, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template:XColor[edit]

No transclusions or incoming links. Created in 2006. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:13, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It was one of the first templates to do that mapping, created in 2006 and fully documented at that time (and the best way). Further templates are more poorly documented, sometimes incomplete. It has been used a lot, but visibly bots have replaced its uses by other templates. If there are no incoming links, it's because it was designed to be "substed". Other templates do not offer that. The reason of its existence was the fact that many browsers at that time did not recognize all X11/CSS3 color names (and there are still some browsers implementing them incoherently). It was made as a simple helper to convert pages and may still be usefu; notably with subst.
Note: NEVER not post notices inside the code transcluded by the template: such notices should be inside the "noinclude" section, without introducing any newlines in the transcluded part. I move your notice to the existing noinclude section. When a template has a do page, you should place it in that doc page instead of modifying the template code! The way you did it broke the template (and all its examples shown on the doc page!). Be careful. verdy_p (talk) 05:23, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you have an issue with how notices are placed, bring it up at Wikipedia talk:Templates for discussion and WP:Twinkle. Placing the template in a noinclude tag prevents the notice from appearing on transcluding pages, which it's designed to be. Gonnym (talk) 08:23, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cmglee you've linked to a discussion of a file on commons. That isn't related to this. The file over there isn't being nominated for deletion. Gonnym (talk) 16:29, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, my reply could have been clearer. This is the situation:
  1. Template:Comparison of Mercator projections.svg was originally used on the articles Mercator projection, Transverse Mercator projection and Oblique Mercator projection – having it as a template rather than separate thumbnails makes the caption consistent on all the articles: updating it updates all transclusions.
  2. @Justinkunimune: uploaded File:Comparison_of_cylindrical_projections.svg with the text labels changed and put them in the articles causing the template to no longer be used anywhere.
  3. In the talk page, I question whether the new SVG is better than the old, as the new labels are less descriptive.
  4. I thus request that the template be kept until the issue is settled.
Cheers, cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 21:34, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes. It should be noted that this is part of the story of conflating Serbian team history with Yugoslav team history. Over the years, there's been a trickle of apparently overzealous football fan edits to mash it all together. In my last iteration of editing these, I did a compromise to at least delineate them nicely; I see you just disentangled them completely now, which is probably just as valid. It doesn't seem likely that an average English reader would be surprised to see this, rather it's the other way around. --Joy (talk) 07:56, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Infobox WEC race[edit]

Unused infobox. Gonnym (talk) 07:26, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WEC races articles haven't a infobox. We have to navigate through the article to find the key information that you would expect to find in a infobox. This template was created last year, but don't know why, was never implemented. So in one way we have a need, and on the other we have the solution, only hasn't been used. If the community agree, I'll start adding this template to WEC races articles already existing. However I need to make a few adjustments before in order to fit all the categories renominations through out the years. So I would purpose to suspend this deletion let's say for a month, and after that period if I or anyone else didn't used this template in a fair amount of articles, it could be nominated again for deletion.Rpo.castro (talk) 17:01, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Rpo.castro can't those articles use Template:Infobox motor race? Gonnym (talk) 08:14, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Currently the Template:Infobox motor race is used in the article that covers all the races held under same designation, like in 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Template:Infobox WEC race is to be used in the article of every single edition like 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans (we have articles for each race of each season of WEC). It could be, if changes were made to Infobox motor race to include optional parameters such as winners and poles for differents categories, but I think it would make it confuse. I think having a template for the main article and one for races is a cleaner option. Rpo.castro (talk) 09:04, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This was used, it got removed for some reason? Lemme check the edit history. — Félix Wolf (talk | contribs) 14:28, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok so it looks like the reason this became unused was because of this revision: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Second_Life&diff=prev&oldid=1219059535
Not entirely sure about the change? It's a technicality issue here because there are two infoboxes there, one is referring to the Viewer software (client) and the simulator software (server). Most people would probably just call the viewer "Second Life" anyway, so I'm fine with it either way, but that might be something that needs to be discussed on the talk page.
Either way, for now, the infobox name field was changed from "Second Life Viewer" to "Second Life". I'd like to move Template:Latest stable software release/Second Life Viewer to Template:Latest stable software release/Second Life instead of having it deleted if that is alright with you. — Félix Wolf (talk | contribs) 14:33, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template:No Infobox[edit]

Newly-created (within the past two weeks) template that's simply redundant to other processes. We already have a way to flag an article as needing an infobox, but it's done on the talk page, whereas this was designed to go at the top of one article that the creator was interested in -- except that it likely took the creator more time to create this than it would have taken them to just add the desired infobox themselves.
For added bonus, it's designed to file articles in a dated monthly "Wikipedia articles with an infobox request from Month Year" category scheme that doesn't exist to have articles filed in it, and there's been no obvious consensus that anybody wants Category:Wikipedia articles with an infobox request (where, again, note that the contents are talk pages, not articles) to start being subbed out by date. As well, since infoboxes are not invariably mandatory on all articles, but in fact their value can depend on article length and context, this could easily just be indiscriminately added to a lot of articles without regard for the nuances of whether an infobox is actually warranted or not — which is precisely one of the reasons why we handle such questions with discreet talk page flags instead of blaring top-of-the-article maintenance templates.
So, essentially, this is just reduplicating a process we already have, badly and in the wrong place for it. Bearcat (talk) 13:31, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete. Inappropriate attempt to create a process against consensus. Creator can have an RFC about it and see if anyone else thinks this is a good idea. Folly Mox (talk) 00:22, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete it was determined that this was not appropriate as a subjectpage notice (along with "image missing", etc) years ago. We already have the talkpage notice {{reqinfobox}} -- 65.92.244.143 (talk) 04:08, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per above, and since some articles don't even have a consensus to have an infobox, there's no reason for this to be an article maintenance tag, rather than a talkpage discussion on whether it should be added or not. Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 14:36, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete They did have recognition from a few other countries, although, looking at Donetsk People's Republic–South Ossetia relations, sourcing doesn't seem to be of the quality you'd want to write good standalone articles that go further than "X officially recognized Y". The navboxes have four and two links respectively, so not great, although there's no objection to recreating them if more articles can be written (hopefully with better sources). Transclusionless template which is both out of date and very unlikely to be helpful if brought up to date. It is meant for images from OpenGeoDB, but that database is currently placed in the public domain. However, it is vanishingly unlikely that this template will be needed in the future: the last edit appears to be from February 2020. If someone needs to upload a one-off image from the database, Commons is the place for that (they have their own c:Template:GFDL-OpenGeoDB). Or, if you really must upload it locally for some reason, you can use a generic {{PD-because|released into the public domain by OpenGeoDB}}. The law that is linked in this template has been offline for over 10 years in that URL (as per Internet Archive). I could however find it elsewhere and it is obvious that this law refers to industrial property (trademarks, patents) and not to intellectual property (copyrights). It states in the Article 33 "It is forbidden to adopt and register as trademarks: [...] 2) the flag, coat of arms or another symbol of the Republic, of the States or the Municipalities, and, in general, any public Venezuelan entity". Previously, the same law states in its Article 27 that "trademark is every sign, figure, drawing, word or word combination, slogan and any other signal that could embody something new, used by a natural or juridical person to distinguish the products they produce, those they sell or their own business". This template has been used to tag "public domain" works by the Venezuelan government but it does not apply at all in this case. Bedivere (talk) 22:18, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Infobox climber[edit]

Propose merging Template:Infobox climber with Template:Infobox mountaineer.
I think that Template:Infobox mountaineer could be handled by Template:Infobox climber. A lot of mountaineers do climbing and visa-versa. Infobox climber is the most important infobox (and the most detailed) and has the richest level of detail on their climbing/mountaineering career (I think infobox climber captures all of mountaineer career data. The mountaineer infobox items of "famous partnerships", "final ascent" and "retirement age" are subjective items). The main differences are around the non-climbing items that cand be just merged? Replace transclusions with Template:Cite NewGrove2001 and delete. Unclear what needs to be merged. Gonnym (talk) 09:12, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The main difference is that {{Cite Grove 2001}} uses Module:Template wrapper (was the use case for which it was created, in fact) so that aliases, defaults, etc. work whereas {{Cite NewGrove2001}} just calls {{cite encyclopedia}} directly. In fact, for that reason, I propose we merge in the opposite direction; cf. this discussion. They're tagged as beta, but that's mainly because Module:Template wrapper was new at the time (it now has 630k transclusions), so mostly the parallell templates are because I got distracted and dropped the ball. In any case we should consolidate and use a consistent implementation for all the Grove-related templates. Xover (talk) 13:07, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Editnotices/Page/Ballon d'Or[edit]

This editnotice is outdated and arguably unnecessary, since the page is now protected, therefore IPs can't mess things up anymore. I requested for an update, but no one seemed interested in it. I think it could be deleted, since in its current state it has no valuable use. Mazewaxie (talkcontribs) 19:53, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Amending nomination: A navigation template that was created 11 years ago and until now was unused and now is used on a single article. Navigation templates aren't helpful if they aren't used on the entire set. This seems like this template is apparently unwanted as it would have been used by now. Gonnym (talk) 16:27, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It was only removed from the main article on May 17. It was added in February. Only one edit removed it of late. This doesn't make it unwarranted and being used on one article doesn't make it a valid reason to delete. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 00:47, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually it does. This template is a navigation template, if isn't used anywhere, then there is no bi-directional navigation and it becomes pointless. If the other articles don't need it, then it just isn't useful. Gonnym (talk) 09:34, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Dag[edit]

Propose merging Template:Dag with Template:Dagger.
I'm going slightly more "discussion" with this TFD than anything, primarily thinking that {{dag}} should either be merged into {{dagger}} or renamed to make it more obvious as to why it's being used (though expanding the name might then make it longer than just typing out the ... pair...). As it stands, {{dag}} by itself is potentially confusing (e.g. "what is a dag", or why it gives a superscript output) so I feel like something needs to be done. Primefac (talk) 14:40, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I find it strange that we still use archaic print notations instead of hyperlinked notes. How are either of those better than a regular {{efn}} note? Gonnym (talk) 15:04, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Primefac: The preferred option is to redirect {{dag}} to {{dagger}}. Given its minimal use, merging simplifies matters. However, if retaining the functionality is crucial, renaming {{dag}} to "superscript-dagger" or "dagger-sup" would clarify its purpose, albeit making it longer. Anoop Bhatia (talk) 02:19, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can tell, it's basically only used as part of {{TAAR ligands}}. Do we need a template for this at all? Caeciliusinhorto-public (talk) 08:40, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Primefac: If choose to merge and retain functionality
{{#if: {{{s|}}} | <sup>†</sup> | † }}

{{dag|s}} will output †

Template:Edit semi-protected

[edit]

Propose merging Template:Edit semi-protected with Template:Request edit.

As I have (surprisingly) recently discovered, this entire family of templates auto-detects the protection level of the template for which the edit request is being made. This means that an {{FPER}} placed on a template-protected template will result in exactly the same thing as a {{TPER}}. Because of this, it seems to me that there is little reason to keep these all as separate templates, instead using the more obvious and reasonably-named {{request edit}} as the base template for this family (instead of the latter template being used as a dab for all five). Primefac (talk) 15:53, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have struck {{request edit}} since most of the participants feel it's not well-suited for the final target. Primefac (talk) 13:00, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Merge the first five together but keep {{request edit}} as is since COI edit requests are, and need to be, a separate process (a page someone has a COI with can also be protected). * Pppery * it has begun... 16:02, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps a parameter such as COI=yes or type=COI could be used to flag the type of edit request that is being made, which would allow all six templates to be merged into Template:Request edit. That would still keep them a separate process. Adam Black tc 16:50, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is there any reason to do that, though? It seems to just make things more complicated for everyone. * Pppery * it has begun... 18:30, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see how it complicates things, it streamlines the process of requesting an edit. Btw, {{request edit}} has been deprecated, so you're already meant to use a different template - {{edit COI}}. Adam Black tc 22:27, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • (edit conflict)Request edit used to be for COI, and it's a generic name that could refer to it or edit partially-blocked as well. Snowmanonahoe (talk · contribs · typos) 16:03, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Being an admin doesn't mean very much here--there's no need to point out you aren't one. Snowmanonahoe (talk · contribs · typos) 17:00, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge the first five and keep {{Request edit}} as a disambiguation per Pppery. I was also rather surprised and amused to find out that the edit request templates automatically emulate each other based on the page's protection level. TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 18:37, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As no one has suggested a title for the proposed merged template, perhaps {{Edit protected}}? TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 18:48, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Should probably have "request" in its name. Gonnym (talk) 19:29, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Then maybe {{Protected edit request}} to match the Module it invokes, though I should note that the possibly enticing shortcut {{PER}} is already a template for the Peruvian flag. TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 20:10, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge first five unless there is some yet-to-be-discovered reason to have them separate. Gonnym (talk) 19:30, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • {{request edit}} needs a new name, since that's not what it does. Other than that, I see no issue with merging the others. Izno (talk) 21:31, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment [Edit: Oppose]: These do not behave identically when the edit request is to an unprotected page. For example, you could use {{Edit extended-protected}} for an article that is within an WP:ARBECR topic area but which has not presently been protected. (If the page is protected, you have to use |force= to force a different protection level the default protection level specified by the wrapper.) SilverLocust 💬 23:38, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Need to make sure the force stuff isn't broken, it is needed sometimes. — xaosflux Talk 15:51, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Because I don't think it's possible to merge these without breaking current functionality (as I explain below), I am changing my comment to an "oppose". (I don't oppose creating a sixth template with no default level that instead would say when the protection level could not be detected, but I oppose redirecting or deleting the five templates proposed for merging.) SilverLocust 💬 20:56, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment this template set is missing a template for requesting edits that are editfiltered, so autodetection doesn't help, when you need extra rights due to an edit filter instead of page protection. If these are merged, will a switch be available to select a rights level for that situation? -- 65.92.244.237 (talk) 02:33, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Except the last, they're all wrappers for Module:Protected edit request with slightly different arguments, so in that sense they're already merged. But we should probably keep the slightly different behavior in that {{Edit fully-protected}} should default to fully-protected if the auto-detection fails, {{Edit semi-protected}} to semi-protected, and so on rather than turning them all into redirects to a single wrapper. {{Request edit}} should probably have no default, if that's reasonable. Anomie 12:01, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak merge, now that the last has been struck, keep different behavior defaults if feasible per Anomie. I also agree that with everything already under one-module it really doesn't make that much of a difference. 2601:5CC:8300:A7F0:4CF1:7456:BBC:F8B5 (talk) 20:30, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support merge - I do like Anomie's point about the default action Happy Editing--IAmChaos 01:39, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Conditional oppose merge per Anomie. These separate 'templates' are just wrappers for that edit request module really, so not any duplicated template code to worry about. Let's not possibly cause unintended behaviour for a template that's used at least hundreds of times everyday, especially with the auto-detect failover. There are other potential complications like what 65.92.244.237 has written above. Though, consider this vote invalidated if it's possible to merge all of these templates together without changing the behaviour and functionality of these templates. — AP 499D25 (talk) 05:56, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Conditional support creating a template with auto-detection, as long as the existing templates are kept per SilverLocust and Anomie. Rusty4321 talk contribs 14:21, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, but the target should maybe be {{Protected edit request}}. {{Request edit}} may be the destination or redirect to a different merge target, since hatnotes can direct users to more appropriate templates. SWinxy (talk) 23:30, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support the currently-proposed merge of the first five. Agree the final template name should be something like {{Protected edit request}}. Elli (talk | contribs) 13:18, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. WP:ECR doesn't always get applied using WP:ECP. Therefore, using {{Edit extended-protected}} on a page that is not extended confirmed protected makes sense. The autodetection will not be able to handle that case. Add that to the other edge cases described above by other editors and it's clear that this merge will create more problems than in will solve. Nickps (talk) 16:08, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Obviously I don't oppose a merge if the current default behavior is retained. Nickps (talk) 16:11, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Unless I am mistaken {{EPER}} doesn't currently recognize non-ECP pages that also happen to be under ARBECR. If I am mistaken, then yes, the post-merge template will be able to handle it because no functionality is being lost (just renamed). Primefac (talk) 16:17, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm going by what Anomie said. If the auto-detection fails, {{EPER}} defaults to ECP. So, while it doesn't recognise that the page is under ARBECR, it still handles the situation correctly. I also just noticed that SilverLocust has already raised this issue. Nickps (talk) 16:28, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There would be a loss in current functionality, Primefac. For example, {{Edit extended-protected|force=yes}} would no longer work.
Each of the five wrapper templates proposed for merging has a default level. E.g., {{Edit extended-protected}} is {{#invoke:protected edit request|extended}} (where the default there is extended). If the page to be edited is unprotected or if |force=yes is used, then that default level is used. If these were all redirected to one template, then there would be a loss of functionality unless someone knows how to tell a module not merely which wrapper is invoking a module (since there would only be one merged wrapper), but rather which redirect is being used to transclude the wrapper that invokes the module (and I don't think that is possible). If no default is provided when invoking the module, then it presently breaks with the error message Lua error in Module:Protected_edit_request/active at line 299: attempt to concatenate local 'boxProtectionLevel' (a nil value). when the page is unprotected or |force=yes is used. SilverLocust 💬 20:21, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@SilverLocust The module could use getContent() to get the text of the current page and then search it for one of the redirect templates. --Ahecht (TALK

That would potentially break when viewing old revisions/permalinks, and probably need to take into account possibilities like multiple requests on a page (compare Module:Is infobox in lead's difficulty of handling multiple infoboxes). I prefer not to have templates behave differently when viewing permalinks/old revisions of a page. (Ahecht also replied at Village pump (technical), where Nickps asked whether this is possible. PrimeHunter replied expressing opposition to the suggestion.) SilverLocust 💬 04:41, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Water polo men's national under-19 team

[edit]

There are no under-19 team articles, nor do I suspect there will be any created in the near future (yes, it's a bit of CRYSTAL, but water polo isn't exactly a hugely popular sport). Thus, I see little to no reason to have these templates purely for the purposes of creating redlinks. Primefac (talk) 14:52, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I created the 2024 Men's European U-19 Water Polo Championship, 2024 Women's European U-19 Water Polo Championship and 2024 Men's European U-19 Water Polo Championship Qualifiers articles that use the templates and will be used even more when both tournaments start. Thus ,they will obviously be used in the future and the men's U-19 template has been extensively used in the 2024 Men's European U-19 Water Polo Championship Qualifiers page. Get your facts right before you nominate stuff for deletion. ILoveSport2006 (talk) 17:37, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ILoveSport2006, you have misunderstood my nomination; ‹See Tfd› Hungary does not exist. Nor does any page for any country at the U19 level. Since this is unlikely to change in the near future, there is no reason to have custom linking templates for them. Primefac (talk) 19:22, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright I did misunderstand, what's the alternative? Having to write Hungary men's national under-19 water polo team every single time for each country when needed and adding a flag icon every time. The main benefit of this template and templates like it is the convenience. Also, these templates plus the European U-19 Championship articles will increase the chances of a potential article for a national team being created. There was no reason for the templates in the past because no articles were created for the U-19 age group in water polo, but now that I started the articles and have the ambition to create more articles for the U-19 World Championships and future European Championships in the age group, there will be more of a need for these templates in the future. ILoveSport2006 (talk) 21:34, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, you would just write {{flag|Hungary}} Hungary because the point is to give a flag and a country name, not necessarily a redlink. I also am not saying that these templates can never be created or used, but currently there is zero point in having them. If you really want to link to the national team (which many I suspect will have an "Under-X" section) use the main {{wp}} or {{wpw}} templates. Primefac (talk) 12:34, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nomination. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 00:18, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • Keep There's a place for these templates like I said before.
    ILoveSport2006 (talk) 14:19, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, most water polo national team wiki pages only talk about youth teams at a passing glance and use the same sentence. Nothing substantial. So the I suspect they include a "Under-X" section argument is wrong. Only the pages of Spain's men and women, plus Croatia's men, address the youth teams in any significant form. ILoveSport2006 (talk) 14:27, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nom. No point in having a custom template to add a redlink. * Pppery * it has begun... 19:04, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • delete per above, without linking articles, this is not helpful. Frietjes (talk) 17:29, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
