Category creation[edit]

I have created this new category to better fit with the renaming of the Move to Wikibooks template to Copy to Wikibooks. The text of the category was taken from Category:Move to Wikibooks. See Template_talk:Copy_to_Wikibooks for the reasons for this. --Xyzzyplugh 04:50, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

After copying...[edit]

Is there a template to replace {{Copy to Wikibooks}} and {{howto}} after information has already been transwikied? I copied one months ago (Organic lawn management) and it's still sitting in this category, and hasn't had the how-to sections removed. Same with several others, even when I've left notes on the talk pages about the transwikis. --SB_Johnny|talk|books 11:24, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. Are you saying that Organic lawn management has already been transwikied? If it has been, a notation should have been made in Wikipedia:Transwiki log. This would allow editors on wikipedia to finish the process on this end (cleaning up the article, proposing it for deletion, or whatever). --Xyzzyplugh 12:17, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You mean this page? It's really never used, so I haven't bothered (there are hundreds of transwikis from en.wp listed on b:Wikibooks:Transwiki). Up 'til now I just leave a note on the talk page for tw'd articles that need modification (I don't bother with that either for transwikis made specifically for forking purposes). One would hope that these tags are added by people interested in improving the articles, though I suppose they might be used as a substitute for {{delete}}?
I just made a template for this: {{Copied to Wikibooks}}, which should do the trick more efficiently.
Category:Articles copied to Wikibooks in need of cleanup should go in one of the maintenance categories... I'll leave that to you :). ----SB_Johnny|talk|books 14:51, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, that's not good. All transwikied articles are required to be listed on the transwiki log to comply with the GFDL, Wikimedia's license. That's the reason the logs were created. Wikipedia's not going care much about Wikibooks' non-compliance, but Wikibooks' content is mirrored across the web. Dmcdevit·t 19:57, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Anything moved to wikibooks is logged there (see b:Wikibooks:Transwiki). I'm pretty sure the GFDL requires things to be logged at the destination, not at the source (actually, I don't think it needs to be on a "transwiki log" at all, it's just that the new document needs to either point to the original document, or have a copy of the edit history attached). --SB_Johnny|talk|books 20:28, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification about moving things to wikibooks[edit]

(Also posted on category talk for how-tos)

The main problem on the wikibooks side with moving articles or fragments from wikipedia is that stubs don't get developed as quickly on that project as they do on here. IOW, we're much less likely to have someone searching around for something, seeing a stub, and developing it into a book (in part because writing books takes a lot more effort, and in part because our community is just smaller than wikipedia's).

If anyone's interested in giving us a hand, there's curently a proposal (b:Wikibooks:Request for enabling special:import on the table to enable special:import on wikibooks to make transwikis easier. Aside from making it easy for admins to import articles, this would also ensure that at least one admin is aware that the material has been brought over, and that page histories are moved as well in compliance with the GFDL. Any support would be appreciated. --SB_Johnny|talk|books 11:39, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, this has been done. Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 01:50, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
