The Antisemitism Awareness Act of 2024 is a proposed law that mandates the use of the working definition of antisemitism by the Department of Education. The bill was made in response to the pro-Palestine protests on university campuses against the Israel-Hamas war, which supporters of Israel, including some members of the United States Congress, have characterized as inherently antisemitic. The law has received criticism from some on grounds of infringement of free speech, as well as from some Republicans on grounds of religious concerns.
Background[edit]
After the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel and ensuing Israeli response, a global spike in antisemitism and Islamophobia was reported. Pro-Palestinian protests on universities contained some instances of perceived and real antisemitism.
