Stylianos Hourmouzios, also spelled Chourmouzios (Greek: Στυλιανός Χουρμούζιος) (1848–1936) was a Cypriot cantor and archon protopsaltes of the Church of Cyprus.

Early life and education[edit]

Hourmouzios was born in Limassol, in a notable family from Omodos, that contributed to journalism, literature and music.[1]

Career[edit]

Cantor[edit]

In the early 20th century there was a debate on the influence of European music on Byzantine music, Hourmouzios was one of the proponents of Byzantine music, and he admonished those who were influenced by European music and changed Byzantine scales to match it.[2]

His most notable student was Theodoulos Kallinikos.[3]

Writer[edit]

In his written works he incorporated Cypriot Greek words, especially in the dialogues and in the speech of the narrator.[4]

Journalist[edit]

In 1884 Hourmouzios started publishing and editing the newspaper Σάλπιγξ, which published the poems of Vasilis Michaelides.[1][5]

Legacy[edit]

Hourmouzios is considered one of the great teachers of ecclesiastical Byzantine music in Cyprus, which he preserved both on a practical and a theoretical level.[6]
