Kamal Haider (Bengali: কামাল হায়দার; 21 January 1947 – 4 June 2024) was a Bangladeshi politician, journalist and freedom fighter. He was a Member of Parliament from Narsingdi-3 Constituency.

Life and career[edit]

Haider was born on 21 January 1947 in Bailabo village of Chakradha Union in Shivpur, Narsingdi. His father's name is Idris Ali Master.

He obtained Honors and Master's degree from the Department of Journalism of Dhaka University.

Kamal Haider joined the Student Union and started his political career.

In 1971, he was a freedom fighter trained in India by the guerilla force composed of NAP, Communist Party and Student Union.

He served as the organizing secretary of the National Awami Party.

Haider was elected to parliament from Narsingdi-3 as a National Awami Party candidate in 1986.[1]

He was one of the leaders of the 15-party and R-party coalition in the anti-military movement in the 1980s and played a role as an important organizer of the popular uprising in the 1990s.

He was defeated from Narsingdi-3 seat as a NAP (Muzaffar) candidate in the 1991 Fifth National Assembly Elections.

He served as General Secretary of Bangladesh Peace Council. Later he joined the politics of Gano Forum and Awami League.

Apart from politics, he was also associated with the profession of journalism.

Death[edit]

Haider died on 4 June 2024, at the age of 77.[2]
