Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Central , Eastern and Southeastern Europe . It borders Ukraine to the north and east, Hungary to the west, Serbia to the southwest, Bulgaria to the south, Moldova to the east, and the Black Sea to the southeast. It has a predominantly continental climate , and an area of 238,397 km2 (92,046 sq mi) with a population of 19 million people (2023). Romania is the twelfth-largest country in Europe and the sixth-most populous member state of the European Union . Its capital and largest city is Bucharest , followed by Cluj-Napoca , Iași , Timișoara , Constanța , Craiova , Brașov , and Galați .
Settlement in what is now Romania began in the Lower Paleolithic followed by written records attesting the kingdom of Dacia , its conquest , and subsequent Romanisation by the Roman Empire during late antiquity . The modern Romanian state was formed in 1859 through a personal union of the Danubian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia . The new state, officially named Romania since 1866, gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877. During World War I , after declaring its neutrality in 1914, Romania fought together with the Allied Powers from 1916. In the aftermath of the war, Bukovina , Bessarabia , Transylvania , and parts of Banat , Crișana , and Maramureș became part of the Kingdom of Romania . In June–August 1940, as a consequence of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact and Second Vienna Award , Romania was compelled to cede Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the Soviet Union and Northern Transylvania to Hungary. In November 1940, Romania signed the Tripartite Pact and, consequently, in June 1941 entered World War II on the Axis side , fighting against the Soviet Union until August 1944, when it joined the Allies and recovered Northern Transylvania. Following the war and occupation by the Red Army , Romania became a socialist republic and a member of the Warsaw Pact . After the 1989 Revolution , Romania began a transition towards democracy and a market economy .
Romania is a high-income country , with a very high Human Development Index and a highly complex economy, that is emerging to be a middle power in international affairs. Romania ranked 47th in the Global Innovation Index in 2023. Its economy ranks among the fastest growing in the European Union, being the world's 44th largest by nominal GDP , and the 36th largest by PPP. Romanian citizens enjoy one of the fastest and cheapest internet speeds in the world. Romania experienced rapid economic growth in the early 2000s; its economy is now based predominantly on services. It is a producer and net exporter of cars and electric energy through companies like Automobile Dacia and OMV Petrom . The majority of Romania's population are ethnic Romanians and religiously identify themselves as Eastern Orthodox Christians , speaking Romanian , a Romance language (more specifically Eastern Romance ). Romania is a member of the United Nations , the European Union , the Schengen Area , NATO , the Council of Europe , BSEC and WTO . (Full article... )

Image 1 The colors of the national
flag of Romania (
Romanian :
Drapelul României ) has a long history, though the association of the three colors only dates to the 18th century. Red, yellow and blue were found on late 16th-century royal grants of
Michael the Brave , as well as shields and banners. Thus, the late 13th century
Wijnbergen armorial shows the coat of arms of the
Wallachian ruler
Litovoi as consisting of a shield of ten vertically alternating gold-and-red bands,. The same two colors,
gules and
or , also appeared on the late 15th century
flag and coat of arms of Moldavia , during the reign of
Stephen the Great . Then, from the late 16th century until the mid-17th century, the
historical coat of arms of Transylvania gradually developed as a
shield party per fess , consisting of a black eagle on blue background in the upper field, a dividing red band in the middle, and seven red towers on golden background in the lower field. Finally, in the
last quarter of the 18th century ,
Bukovina gets its own coat of arms from the
Habsburg Empire , a blue-and-red
shield party per pale with a black
aurochs ' head in the middle, and three golden six-pointed stars surrounding it. During the
Wallachian uprising of 1821 , these three colors were present, along others, on the canvas of the revolutionaries' flag and its fringes; for the first time a meaning was attributed to them: "Liberty (blue-sky), Justice (yellow field), Fraternity ( blood)". (

Alcohol You " is a song recorded by Romanian singer
Roxen ,
digitally released on 21 February 2020 by
Global Records . It was written by Ionuț Armaș and
Breyan Isaac , while Viky Red solely handed its production. "Alcohol You" emerged as the winner of
Selecția Națională 2020 and was thus scheduled to represent Romania at the
Eurovision Song Contest 2020 before the event's cancellation due to the
COVID-19 pandemic in China and its spread to other countries. Roxen had previously been internally selected at the country's representative by
Romanian Television (TVR).
Musically, the track is a
ballad that discusses emotions such as sadness, despair, hope and nostalgia, as well as finding
inner peace . It has a
minimalistic and
Billie Eilish -inspired production. "Alcohol You" was generally well received by
music critics upon release, receiving praise for its lyrics and Roxen's vocal delivery. To promote the song, a lyric video was uploaded to
YouTube simultaneously with the track's digital availability. Directed by Bogdan Păun, Roxen is shown in front of a neon sketch of herself alongside light and smoke effects. Additionally, the singer performed "Alcohol You" on the native talk show
La Măruță and radio station

Image 3 Ajtony ,
Ahtum or
Achtum (
Hungarian :
Ajtony ,
Bulgarian :
Охтум ,
Romanian :
Ahtum ,
Serbian :
Ахтум ) was an early-11th-century ruler in the territory now known as
Banat in present
Romania and
Serbia . His primary source is the
Long Life of Saint Gerard , a 14th-century
hagiography . Ajtony was a powerful ruler who owned many horses, cattle and sheep and was baptised according to the
Orthodox rite in
Vidin . He taxed salt which was transferred to King
Stephen I of Hungary on the
Mureș River . The king sent
Csanád , Ajtony's former commander-in-chief, against him at the head of a large army. Csanád defeated and killed Ajtony, occupying his realm. In the territory, at least one
county and a
Roman Catholic diocese were established.
Historians disagree on the year of Ajtony's defeat; it may have occurred in 1002, 1008 or between 1027 and 1030. His ethnicity is also a subject of historical debate; he may have been
Hungarian ,
Kabar ,
Pecheneg or
Romanian . In Romanian historiography, Ajtony and
Glad , the ruler of Banat during the
Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin according to the 13th century
Gesta Hungarorum are viewed as members of a Romanian ruling dynasty. (

Basarab I (
Romanian: [basaˈrab] ⓘ ), also known as
Basarab the Founder (
Romanian :
Basarab Întemeietorul ; c. 1270 – 1351/1352), was a
voivode and later the first independent ruler of
Wallachia who lived in the first half of the
14th century . Many details of his life are uncertain. Although his name is of
Turkic origin, 14th-century sources unanimously state that he was a
Vlach (
Romanian ). According to two popular theories, Basarab either came into power between 1304 and 1324 by dethroning or peacefully succeeding the legendary founder of Wallachia,
Radu Negru , or in 1310 by succeeding his father,
Thocomerius .
A royal charter issued on 26 July 1324 is the first document to reference Basarab. According to the charter, he was subject to
Charles I of Hungary as the voivode of Wallachia. Basarab became "disloyal to the
Holy Crown of Hungary " in 1325. He seized the
Banate of Severin and raided the southern regions of the
Kingdom of Hungary . Basarab supported
Michael Shishman of Bulgaria 's attack against the
Kingdom of Serbia , but their united armies were defeated in the
Battle of Velbazhd on 28 July 1330. Soon after,
Charles I of Hungary invaded Wallachia, but the Wallachians ambushed and almost annihilated the royal troops in the
Battle of Posada , which occurred between 9 and 12 November 1330. (

Image 5 Cătărău around the time of the
Debrecen bombing
Ilie V. Cătărău (
Romanian pronunciation: [iˈli.e kətəˈrəw] , reportedly born
Katarov , last name also
Cătărău-Orhei ; July 21, 1888 – ca. 1955) was a
Bessarabian -born political adventurer, soldier and spy, who spent parts of his life in the
Kingdom of Romania . Leading a secretive life, he is widely held to have been the main perpetrator of two bomb attacks, which sought to exacerbate tensions between Romania and
Austria-Hungary in the buildup to
World War I . Beyond his cover as a refugee from the
Russian Empire , and his public commitment to
Romanian nationalism , Cătărău was a
double agent , working for both Russian and Romanian interests; he may also have been linked to the
Black Hundreds . His terrorist actions, and especially the
letter bomb which he sent to the
Hungarian Catholic Bishopric in
Debrecen , occurred shortly before, and are probably connected with, the
Sarajevo Assassination .
Cătărău managed to flee prosecution, settling in
Egypt (which deported him), and later in
China . He continued to make return trips to Romania, which finally arrested him upon
entering the war —though he managed to escape, he remained on Romanian soil, only leaving on return visits to the
Russian Republic . By 1917, as leader of the "Romanian Nationalist-Revolutionary Party", Cătărău was formally committed to
anarchism and
communism , allying himself with Bessarabia's
Bolshevik insurgents. Profiting from favorable circumstances, and nominally serving the anti-Bolshevik
Moldavian Democratic Republic , he became commander of its 1st Moldavian Regiment in late 1917. In short time, his position and his application of a communist program eroded the Republic's prestige, and his soldiers began openly threatening the Bessarabian government. Cătărău was deposed and arrested by Military Director
Gherman Pântea and a unit of
Amur Cossacks , and sent into exile. (

Image 6 Andrew Báthory (
Hungarian :
Báthory András ;
Polish :
Andrzej Batory ; 1562 or 1563 – 3 November 1599) was the
Cardinal-deacon of
Sant'Adriano al Foro from 1584 to 1599,
Prince-Bishop of Warmia from 1589 to 1599, and
Prince of Transylvania in 1599. His father was a brother of
Stephen Báthory , who ruled the
Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1575. He was the childless Stephen Báthory's favorite nephew. He went to Poland at his uncle's invitation in 1578 and studied at the
Jesuit college in
Pułtusk . He became
canon in the
Chapter of the
Roman Catholic Diocese of Warmia in 1581, and
provost of the
Monastery of Miechów in 1583.
Pope Gregory XIII appointed Báthory cardinal during his visit to Rome in 1584. A year later, he was installed as
coadjutor bishop of Warmia. He was in Rome again when Stephen Báthory died in 1586. Andrew was one of the candidates to succeed him in Poland and Lithuania, but
Jan Zamoyski , the
Chancellor of Poland , convinced him to support another candidate,
Sigismund Vasa , and to demonstrate the Báthorys' claim to the crown only through nominating his minor cousin,
Sigismund Báthory ,
Prince of Transylvania . After Sigismund Vasa was elected king in 1587, Báthory convinced his cousin's advisors to send reinforcements to Poland to fight against
Maximilian of Habsburg , who also claimed the throne. Báthory became Prince-Bishop of Warmia after the death of Bishop
Marcin Kromer in 1589. (

Image 7 Stan during a 2012
Sofia performance
Alexandra Ioana Stan (born 10 June 1989) is a Romanian singer. Born in
Constanța , she made her worldwide breakthrough with the 2010 single "
Mr. Saxobeat ", which was written and produced by Marcel Prodan and Andrei Nemirschi. They had previously discovered Stan at a karaoke bar in 2009 and signed her to their label, Maan Records. "Mr. Saxobeat" had followed the singer's debut single, "
Lollipop (Param Pam Pam) " (2009), which brought her moderate fame in Romania. "Mr. Saxobeat" quickly achieved commercial success locally and abroad, reaching number one in several countries and gathering various
certifications .
Saxobeats , Stan's debut studio album, was released in August 2011 and features the follow-up singles "
Get Back (ASAP) " (2011) and "
Lemonade " (2012), which had moderate success in Europe.
An alleged altercation with Prodan in 2013 and
a lawsuit against him preceded the release of Stan's second album,
Unlocked , which would eventually be issued in August 2014. Two of its singles, "
Dance " (2014) and "
Cherry Pop " (2014), were successful in Japan. Stan's third studio album,
Alesta , was released in March 2016 and included a collaboration with
Inna and
Daddy Yankee on "
We Wanna " (2015); the single went on to reach the top 60 in several countries.
Mami , her fourth record, followed in 2018. Preceding the release of
its last single was Stan's feature on
Manuel Riva 's "
Miami " (2018), which peaked within the top ten in Romania and on
Billboard 's Dance Club Songs chart. Stan has received a number of awards and nominations, including the
European Border Breakers Award , a
Japan Gold Disc Award , an
MTV Europe Music Award and two
Romanian Music Awards . She is also referred to as one of the most successful Romanian artists alongside Inna. (

Image 8 The
Wallachian Revolution of 1848 was a
Romanian liberal and
nationalist uprising in the
Principality of Wallachia . Part of the
Revolutions of 1848 , and closely connected with the
unsuccessful revolt in the
Principality of Moldavia , it sought to overturn the administration imposed by
Imperial Russian authorities under the
Regulamentul Organic regime, and, through many of its leaders, demanded the abolition of
boyar privilege. Led by a group of young
intellectuals and officers in the
Wallachian Militia , the movement succeeded in toppling the ruling
Prince Gheorghe Bibescu , whom it replaced with a provisional government and a
regency , and in passing a series of major
progressive reforms, announced in the
Proclamation of Islaz .
Despite its rapid gains and popular backing, the new administration was marked by conflicts between the
radical wing and more
conservative forces, especially over the issue of
land reform . Two successive abortive coups were able to weaken the Government, and its international status was always contested by Russia. After managing to rally a degree of sympathy from
Ottoman political leaders, the Revolution was ultimately isolated by the intervention of Russian diplomats, and ultimately repressed by a common intervention of Ottoman and Russian armies, without any significant form of armed resistance. Nevertheless, over the following decade, the completion of its goals was made possible by the international context, and former revolutionaries became the original political class in united
Romania . (

Image 9 Sigismund Báthory (
Hungarian :
Báthory Zsigmond ; 1573 – 27 March 1613) was
Prince of Transylvania several times between 1586 and 1602, and
Duke of Racibórz and
Opole in
Silesia in 1598. His father,
Christopher Báthory , ruled Transylvania as
voivode (or deputy) of the absent prince,
Stephen Báthory . Sigismund was still a child when the
Diet of Transylvania elected him voivode at his dying father's request in 1581. Initially, regency councils administered Transylvania on his behalf, but Stephen Báthory made
János Ghyczy the sole regent in 1585. Sigismund adopted the title of prince after Stephen Báthory died.
The Diet proclaimed Sigismund to be of age in 1588, but only after he agreed to expel the
Jesuits .
Pope Sixtus V excommunicated him, but the ban was lifted in 1590, and the Jesuits returned a year later. His blatant favoritism towards the Catholics made him unpopular among his Protestant subjects. He decided to join the
Holy League against the
Ottoman Empire . Since he could not convince the Diet to support his plan, he renounced the throne in July 1594, but the commanders of the army convinced him to revoke his abdication. At their proposal, he purged the noblemen who opposed the war against the Ottomans. He officially joined the Holy League and married
Maria Christina of Habsburg , a niece of the
Holy Roman Emperor ,
Rudolph II . The marriage was never
consummated . (

Image 10 The
Edict of Torda (
Hungarian :
tordai ediktum ,
Romanian :
Edictul de la Turda ,
German :
Edikt von Torda ) was a decree that authorized local communities to freely elect their preachers in the
Eastern Hungarian Kingdom of
John Sigismund Zápolya . The delegates of the
Three Nations of Transylvania – the
Hungarian nobles ,
Transylvanian Saxons , and
Székelys – adopted it at the request of the monarch's
Antitrinitarian court preacher,
Ferenc Dávid , in
Torda (
Romanian :
Turda ,
German :
Thorenburg ) on 28
January 1568. Though it did not acknowledge an individual's right to
religious freedom , in sanctioning the existence of a radical Christian religion in a European state, the decree was an unprecedented act of
religious tolerance .
The
Catholic and
Eastern Orthodox churches had coexisted in the southern and eastern territories of the medieval
Kingdom of Hungary for centuries. However, ideas that the Catholic Church regarded as
heresy were not tolerated: the Hungarian
Hussites were expelled from the country in the 1430s and the 1523
Diet of Hungary passed a decree that ordered the persecution of
Lutherans . The latter decree was in practice ignored during the civil war that followed the
Ottoman victory against the Hungarian army in the
Battle of Mohács in 1526. After the Ottomans occupied the central regions of the medieval kingdom in 1541, they allowed the infant John Sigismund to rule the lands to the east of the river
Tisza under the regency of his mother,
Isabella Jagiellon . In the early 1540s the Diets acknowledged the right of the Three Nations to freely regulate their internal affairs. The Saxons regarded religion as an internal affair and ordered the introduction of the Lutheran
Reformation in their settlements in 1544–1545. The Diet sanctioned the coexistence of the Catholic and Lutheran denominations only in 1557. (

Image 11 Mihail Kogălniceanu (
Romanian pronunciation: [mihaˈil koɡəlniˈtʃe̯anu] ⓘ ; also known as
Mihail Cogâlniceanu ,
Michel de Kogalnitchan ; September 6, 1817 – July 1, 1891) was a
Romanian liberal statesman, lawyer, historian and publicist; he became
Prime Minister of Romania on October 11, 1863, after the
1859 union of the
Danubian Principalities under
Domnitor Alexandru Ioan Cuza , and later served as
Foreign Minister under
Carol I . He was several times
Interior Minister under Cuza and Carol. A
polymath , Kogălniceanu was one of the most influential Romanian
intellectuals of his generation. Siding with the moderate
liberal current for most of his lifetime, he began his political career as a collaborator of
Prince Mihail Sturdza , while serving as head of the
Iași Theater and issuing several publications together with the poet
Vasile Alecsandri and the activist
Ion Ghica . After editing the highly influential magazine
Dacia Literară and serving as a professor at
Academia Mihăileană , Kogălniceanu came into conflict with the authorities over his
Romantic nationalist inaugural speech of 1843. He was the ideologue of the abortive
1848 Moldavian revolution , authoring its main document,
Dorințele partidei naționale din Moldova .
Following the
Crimean War (1853–1856), with Prince
Grigore Alexandru Ghica , Kogălniceanu was responsible for drafting legislation to
abolish Roma slavery . Together with Alecsandri, he edited the unionist magazine
Steaua Dunării , played a prominent part during the elections for the
ad hoc Divan , and successfully promoted Cuza, his lifelong friend, to the throne. Kogălniceanu advanced legislation to revoke
traditional ranks and titles , and to
secularize the property of monasteries . His efforts at
land reform resulted in a
censure vote , leading Cuza to enforce them through a
coup d'état in May 1864. However, Kogălniceanu resigned in 1865, following his own conflicts with the monarch. (
