Taiwan-Slovakia relations refers to bilateral ties between Taiwan (formally known as the Republic of China) and Slovakia (formally known as the Slovak Republic).

Overview[edit]

Slovakian interests in Taiwan are represented by the Slovak Economic and Cultural Office Taipei.[1]

Slovakia does not extend diplomatic recognition to Taiwan although it is exploring ways to do so.[2]

History[edit]

As Slovakia was part of the Czechoslovak state, diplomatic relations between Czechoslovakia and Japan was established in 1919 as Taiwan was a colonial dependency of Japan.[3][verification needed] Czech architect Antonin Raymond was the honorary consul for the First Czechoslovak Republic in Japan from 1926 until 1939, representing the government of T. G. Masaryk.[4] The relations were broken off during World War II from 1939.[5] During that period, there was no diplomatic consular representation in Taihoku.

In August 1968, the ROC (then an internationally recognized entity of “China”) was among the ten members of the United Nations Security Council to condemn the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia led by the Soviet Union, the latter of whom opposed the resolution.[citation needed]

After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, neither Slovakia nor the ROC officially established diplomatic ties.

The Slovak Economic and Cultural Office Taipei was opened in 2001.[6]

Martin Podstavek assumed the role of Slovakian representative in Taiwan in 2017. In 2022, Podstavek was awarded the Taiwanese Grand Medal of Diplomacy.[1]

In 2021, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of Slovakia passed a resolution to support the attendance of Taiwan at the World Health Assembly.[7]

Trade[edit]

During the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan donated masks to Slovakia. Later in the pandemic, Slovakia reciprocated with COVID vaccines.[8]

Taiwan and Slovakia held trade talks in 2021.[9][10]
