Consensus 1985 All-Americans[edit]

Can someone please advise as to why these individuals below are listed under the Consensus section. As I understand it, in order to be considered a consensus All-American, they need to be recognized as first-team by at least half of the official selectors. So for 1985 that means a minimum of three. None of these listed below meets that criteria. Am I missing something? Thank you.

Name Position School Number[1] Official Other
John Rienstra Offensive guard Temple 2/3/5 AP, FWAA GNS, NEA, SH
Jamie Dukes Offensive guard Florida State 2/1/3 FWAA, WC SH
Reggie Dupard Running back SMU 1/0/1 FWAA -
Napoleon McCallum Running back Navy 1/0/1 WC -
Thurman Thomas Running back Oklahoma State 1/0/1 UPI -
Johnny Holland Linebacker Texas A&M 2/0/2 AP, FWAA -

  • The NCAA-published "Football Award Winners" (here), at page 13, lists each of them as consensus All-Americans. It's my understanding that, if nobody gets a majority of the designations, the NCAA recognizes as consensus those with the most designations. I do, however, recall looking at this in the past and finding some contradictions in how NCAA determines its list of consensus AAs. Cbl62 (talk) 02:19, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks cbl62,
I have reviewed the document, and yes, it appears they did not follow their own criteria, which is disappointing. I've noticed the same thing on other All-America Team pages that I have been editing. I have some questions about the All-America Team pages, where would be the best place to ask them? 1. ^ This column lists the number of selectors choosing the player as a first-team All-American as follows: official selectors/other selectors/total selectors.
