Independent athletes

Hi The above subsection was taken without discussion. This is one of the big issues in the Russia and doping issue that is dominating the news. The NOC section is regarding National Olympic Committees participating in the competition. One of the recently resolved issues was whether or not athletes could participate without being members of the NOC. The IOC issued a specific statement regarding this issue [=https://web.archive.org/web/20160725144348/https://www.olympic.org/news/background-information-to-the-decision-of-the-ioc-executive-board-concerning-the-participation-of-russian-athletes-in-the-olympic-games-rio-2016]. This is why we need to retain the section below.

Independent Athletes
In November 2015, Russia was provisionally suspended from all international athletic competitions by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) following a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) report into a doping program in the country.[1] The IAAF announced that it would allow individual Russian athletes to apply for "exceptional eligibility" to participate in the Games as "neutral" athletes, if it were independently-verified that they had not engaged in doping nor the Russian doping program.whistleblower Yuliya Stepanova to compete as ‘neutral athlete’ in Rio
On 24 July 2016, the IOC rejected the IAAF and WADA's recommendations to allow clean athletes to compete neutrally, stating that the Olympic Charter "does not foresee such 'neutral athletes'" and that it was up to each country's National Olympic Committee to decide which athletes would be competing.[2]

@Rybkovich: Hello. Sorry, but I disagree. There are several controversies about the Rio Olympics that are gaining wide media coverage. Precisely for this reason I created a major article about that topic. I do not understand why the doping case of Russia should gain more attention than the other concerns get up for the event. Besides the poor water quality, Rio also struggles with poor air quality. This should be mentioned in the Controversy section, yes?

Current

The "current" templates are designed to be used when an article is changing rapidly, i.e. when hundreds of edits are being made to a page in a single day. Since this page seems to be stable at the moment, I don't see the need for the {{current sport}} template right now. I think the best way to convey that the Games are currently happening is to simply say so in the first sentence/paragraph of the article. Mz7 (talk) 02:36, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
All the "rapid editing", if there is any, is being made on the numerous individual events articles (like Shooting at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Women's 10 metre air rifle), but really only confined to just updating scores and results in real time. Issues with layout

Most people reading this article will be interested in results and scheduling. We, as the curators of this article, make them scroll past a hellava lot of information about bidding, development of venues, financing etc. before letting them get to the content of interest - i.e. what is on and what are the results? I know this is an encyclopedia and not a news site but do we have to ignore our readers to this extent? -- Mattinbgn (talk) 01:07, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

I don't think we have to reorganize the whole article. We could add some sort of hatnote with a link to the schedule of events, but I think even that might cross the WP:NOTNEWS line. Our purpose is to convey information about this Olympics as a whole, and it makes sense to do that by beginning with, well, the beginning (the bidding process). Mz7 (talk) 04:14, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

Jaime Espinal and Franklin Gómez nationality

I know that this shouldn't be here but I don't know where to discuss this. Anyways, I think we should put only "Puerto Rican" in the infobox of Jaime Espinal and Franklin Gómez since guys like Mo Farah were born in other countries but he has only represented GB and he only has "British" in the infobox and not Somali and British. Lack of information on environmental actions by organizers

The 2016 Summer Olympics' organizers have made a number of deliberate decisions in regards to the promotion of sustainability and the prevention of climate change, such as the smaller flame, use of recycled materials in the medals, etc., but the article does not have a centralized location for discussion of this.

This is an important aspect of these Games and should be covered, and can be sourced easily. ViperSnake151  Talk  16:22, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Martinho Nobre (help needed from someone who understands Portuguese)

As far as I understand, this [3] is the article about Martinho Nobre, the man who took the Olympic Oath on behalf of the officials. Sport/sub-sport breakdown

Any idea why we have one grouping of sports in the Sports section and a different grouping in the Calendar section (e.g. Wrestling split/not split, Equestrian split/not split) and inconsistencies on which levels icons appear at (Aquatics has icons at the sub-level in both sections, others only in the Calendar section)?

More importantly, any idea why we group sports at all when the official sites don't?

Initially I was convinced by the sport/discipline arguments - but actually you're absolutely right. Official sources only list sports, not disciplines. I think the confusion comes about because there are only 28 governing bodies covering the sports (see Olympic sports). But just because a governing body covers more than 1 sport doesn't make it the same sport.
I really can't see how water polo and swimming are the same sport just because they're both in water. Rugby Sevens and Football are far more closely related to each other. Richjhart (talk) 09:13, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

How many Olympic Sports?

Hi. I dont want to be the smart guy here, but in my opinion, there are at least 40, probably even 42 or 42 diffirent Olympic Sports in Rio de Janeiro, but Wikipedia says 28. As far as I can tell, Wikipedia is the only place that lists them as disciplines rather than sports. A number come under the same governing body, but that doesn't make them the same sport. Even the BBC (not an official source) lists the aquatic "disciplines" as fully separate sports. And the IOC and Olympic pages list all the "disciplines" as different sports. The grouping here mostly seems to be based on Olympic sports, which has no justification for listing "sports" as "disciplines". Although some sources do group some things, I can't find any sources that list exactly 28 sports - other than the number being repeated across multiple Wikipedia articles. It looks like Wikipedia has stylized the alternate name as "official" on most of the recent game articles, although I find no source explicitly stating this is official per the IOC. I think the alternate name which includes Roman numerals and the olympiad time period is more precisely a formal name (this term is currently used in the 2012 article). Would you be in favor of using the term "formal" for the alternate (English) name in the English language article? Hoof Hearted (talk) 20:45, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

In a world where the European Union exists. To know which countries are in the EU check European Union and just in case you need to know more check the list of countries by GDP List of countries by GDP (nominal) as well. There, in that new world. The USA are leading the Medals Table by less then half the medals of the European Union and the counting continues. I bet that they will end the games by an even greater margin then just half the EU medals. The Table should include a clear view of the reality instead of hypocrite lies and dementia in a state of denial. Maybe a pharma pill to blur the "eye" and the brain will help you win the Medals Table. Perhaps the servers haven't caught up with each article. Try purging the pages for it to update. Also the table on this article is only a summary of the overall table from its main article. So it will only ever show the top-10, with the remainder combined. Wes Mouse ✒ 02:14, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
It is still not syncing. I noticed that in the medal table page the /onlyinclude tag had by now migrated to the 12th place, resulting in the accusation of racism below, but moving it back under the 10th position did not fix the problem. Perhaps another formatting error is preventing it from updating. Since the table is so often updated, some detailed hidden instructions could be useful. E.g., do the 11-... numbers below "class="sort bottom" need to correspond to the total number of NOCs with medals (currently 44) or the total number of positions (currently the lowest is 39 for 1 bronze)? There is no racism whatsoever. The table on any main Olympic article has always summarised the top 10 only. Each games has its own medal article which shows the medal table in its entirety, and that has always been the case. So put that racism card back in the deck, with the rest. If you used an ounce of commonsense IP.123.231.85.119, then you will probably have worked out that vandalism could have been the cause for there being 11 countries on the table earlier today, rather than the preferred top-10. Doesn't take a scientist to have figured that one out. Maybe a fan supporting Team GB did a bit of "favouritism" pushing, which isn't uncommon around here, and placed Team GB within the table, only for it to be removed later on. It happens all the time, even on Eurovision Song Contest articles, you will find vandals adding their "favourite" country as participating and/or winning. So just because someone added Team GB doesn't make it the end of the world or some big drama. And for the record, as a British Citizen, I am not being racist towards Team GB, nor showing any biased favouritism. also I have not distorted what you asked for at all. You explicitly called an editor for being "racist" as the were being "biased towards GB". You can't call someone "racist" just because they are supporting a team. Field Hockey Finals Dates Wrong Way Around

Transporting problems

Should the article mention that journalists from around the world has deemed the transports at the Olympics as right out bad. And that they have had a hard time transporting themselves between events. That few volunteers spoke English at all. etc.BabbaQ (talk) 22:33, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

US swimmer controversy

This was not a defining aspect of these Olympics in comparison to controversies listed in the opening paragraphs.

The heavy focus and narrativisation of this incident in the opening paragraphs seems disingenuous and an attempt to distract from more important issues, notably the IOC and Russian doping.

Recommend a rewrite of the third opening paragraph to place proper emphasis on key issues.

"The drama at the Olympics reached it's peak when U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte made a false statement regarding a robbery in the early morning hours after the final night of swimming on Sunday, August 14, 2016 when he and three other U.S. swimmers were caught on camera vandalizing a nearby gas station before being stopped by actual Rio police officers. The incident took much of the publicity away from the actual events because of it's severe and controversial nature." "Held entirely in winter"

The lead section claims these Games were "the first held entirely in winter", in reference to the fact that it is currently winter on the southern hemisphere. On the other hand, Rio lies within the tropics, where there are hardly any astronomical seasons. Does this distinction make sense? Steinbach (talk) 07:09, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

I think the DR Congo is alphabetically supposed to be between the Dominican Republic and Ecuador in the 'Participating National Olympic Committees' section. Please correct me if I am wrong and there is a reason for the current location of the DR Congo. Buscus 3 (talk) 19:45, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
