Wrong attribution of name[edit]

The city was named after Attalus II Philadelphus, by his brother, Eumenes II, of the Attalid dynasty. The epithet "Φιλάδελφος", from φιλέω (to love) and ἀδελφός (brother) signifies "he who loves his brother"; nothing else. An apt name for this city. Over the years, the current mistranslation has been institutionalized, and few would dare question the silly received mantra, as here.
