Printer and publisher?[edit]

Was there one "Caxton" press or two in the UK?

I collect mid-century British textbooks, mostly on engineering but also on trades such as tailoring or carpentry. One of the major imprints for works of this type is Caxton, usually as black-covered multi-volume sets. That doesn't fit though with the article here, describing a company that sounds more like a printer than a publisher, especially not one with two presses specialising in letterpress.

Are there two companies? Or does this article need expansion to cover the textbook imprint specifically? Andy Dingley (talk) 13:49, 5 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The "Caxton Press" described in this article seems to be purely a printer. The "Caxton Publishing Co Ltd" to which you refer was a publisher based in London. Grace's Guide To British Industrial History says its offices were at 161 Surrey Street, London WC2.[1] According to other sources, it was trading by about 1890.
I have shipbuilding textbooks that Caxton Publishing published in 1948 and 1954. The title pages of the 1948 editions give Caxton's head office in Surrey Street as "Clun House". The 1954 edition gives it as Morley Hall, St George Street, London W1. Motacilla (talk) 18:43, 3 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
