Newsflash: The British Won the Crimean War To say that the British lost the Crimean War is simply not true. Thought Cicil Woodham-Smith was correct in her conclusion that the battle for Balaclava was a fiasco the war ended with the fall of Sevastopol to the British. For this reason its hardly believable that the Russians won the war. Its certainly true that the Russian goal of protecting Orthodox subjects within the Turkish Empire was not realized. Names[edit]

Is Cecil correct? Shouldn't it be the feminine version Cecille?AT Kunene (talk) 15:03, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No, that's not a typo (BION!). Mrs Woodham-Smith's first name was indeed Cecil Redpaul1 (talk) 10:41, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
But surely people who only ever saw her name written would have naturally assumed it referred to a male. And surely this innate potential for confusion caused her some grief, at least fodder for numerous anecdotes. Where are they? -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 22:44, 3 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Second Class Degree[edit]

It's worth noting that Mrs Woodham-Smith's award of a second class degree in 1917 would be the equivalent of a 2:1 today, since the University of Oxford used four degree classifications until the late 1970s.
