Article title[edit]

Surely the title of the article should be Kingston upon Hull City Council, the formal name of the council —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.147.239.105 (talk) 19:18, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The council use the short form of Hull City Council and we follow using the more popular name rather than the formal name as per WP:NAME. Keith D (talk) 12:32, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pre-1929 political composition[edit]

I have just seen an edit The ed17 removing the political composition history summary prior to 1929. They claim the date in the original edit (1440) 'goes back before current UK political parties existed'.

Party politics in local elections was not formally established in England and Wales until the interwar period. In Hull, prior to 1929, no political party held a majority because only Labour Party and Independent Labour Party candidates stood for political parties. This does not mean councillors were independent. The vast majority going back to 1882 at least were members of local Liberal and Conservative associations. If 1440 is an inappropriate start point, then 1929 is even worse as current political parties certainly existed at that stage. Of the major ones: Labour was formed in 1900; the Conservative Party in 1834; the Liberal Party in 1859.
The first party political councillor in Hull was elected in 1893. The first formal Conservative councillor was elected in 1922 and the first Liberal in 1960.
Where should the line be drawn? Wazzok1 (talk) 18:47, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
