Just Judges[edit]

What are we to make of Leopold III being depicted as one of the Just Judges? Here we must remember that during the period Belgium was gripped by a discussion about the fitness of Leopold III for the throne. In 1951, the year in which the panel was included in the altarpiece, Leopold III was obliged to abdicate the crown. Was Van der Veken a supporter of Leopold III, who with some justification could be regarded as a collaborator? Belgium was divided, and a referendum revealed the depth of popular support for the king. Yet another indication of the complexity of Van der Veken. Everybody got to be somewhere!
