Automotive business

The paragraph about Kerkorian and the automotive business doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Can someone who knows the facts add some detail (and grammar) or just eliminate the paragraph please? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Beaverfever (talkcontribs) 11:55, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't know when the unsigned comment above was added, but as of this morning there were separate sections for GM and Chrysler, and each section had grammar issues. (The GM section comprised two paragraphs, for no apparent reason, and the Chrysler section only one.) I made a few revisions, ultimately creating an "Automobile industry" section with one paragraph for GM, one for Chrysler, and adding a new paragraph for Ford. I added several links along the way, including share price information (thanks be to Google!) and cleaned up the grammar somewhat. The new structure seems to fit better with the overall biography, and hopefully it reads better and is more informative also.TVC 15 (talk) 19:51, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

point of reference

As a point of reference, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (The film company) and MGM Mirage (The resort operator) are not affiliated with each other and MGM Mirage is not a subsidary of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Tracinda Corporation, which is directly owned by Mr. Kerkorian and his family, own majority stakes in both companies which are separately traded on the New York Stock Exchange and most likely MGM Mirage has had to pay some sort of a licensing fee to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for the right to use MGM and Leo Lion trademarks. MGM doesn't have to pay because both companies were created from MGM and both have rights to use the name. Notice MGM Grand now has the MGM stock symbol. Disney also has some rights to use MGM in theme parks. MGM studio is now controled by a group including Sony.

The article skips over numerous instances where Kerkorian was involved in Mafia tied deals. The Ceasar's Palace land he made his first fortune off was previously owned by Myford Irvine, heir to the Irvine estate (i.e. Orange County). Irvine was shot in the head after begging his accountants for millions of dollars in cash on short notice. His death was ruled a suicide. Around the same time Kerkorian was recorded talking about a deal with a major Mafia figure in New York. Caesar's Palace was long considered Mafia controlled.

Kerkorian was particularly close to Moe Dalitz, a major Jewish gangster. Kerkorian stopped speaking with the press after being questioned about Dalitz by Forbes. The deal with Ted Turner was set up by Michael Milken. People talk about Enron accounting but it was really invented by Milken. MGM was the first major company to do business with him. Giancarlo Parretti also had Mafia ties, and these were well known before Kerkorian sold him MGM. The deal also brought down the Frence bank Credit Lyonais. This was one of the biggest and oldest banks in the world.

military question

How does an American-born son of Armenian immigrants end up in the British Air Force? This needs better explanation.

Rewrite

The majority of this article needs to be rewritten. The best word I can think of to describe its current state is "annoying." I only had time to fix the second paragraph, which was the most irritating. I know I am being very vague, but if you would like an example, compare the newly written second paragraph to the previous one.

Kerkorian and MGM: KEATON

I found a dangling reference to "KEATON" that I removed. Here's the paragraph before I edited it. if someone can complete the KEATON reference, feel free to put it back in. --Zippy 16:37, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Aubrey downsized the struggling MGM and sold off massive amounts of historical memorabilia, including Dorothy's ruby slippers (from The Wizard of Oz), and several acres KEATON (which were razed to build houses).

Organized Crime

"Irvine was shot to death after begging his estate for a large amount of cash within hours."

  • He was shot to death within hours of begging his estate for a large amount of cash?
  • He was shot to death not long after begging his estate to provide a large amount of cash quickly?

I assume the second, but the sentence is unclear. This section (and the most of the rest of the article) could use references.
