Definite survivor?[edit]

I ask because this article from American Heritage, which has been used as a source in the Mount Pelée article, says that Compère-Léandre died shortly after reaching Fond-St. Dénis. 86.132.137.5 (talk) 23:43, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Would that historian writers cited their sources... The article from American Heritage does not say whether he died as a consequence of his burns; and it may also depend on the meaning of "shortly". A source stating that he "would recover from his burns" is: Ernest Zebrowski (2002). The last days of St. Pierre: the volcanic disaster that claimed thirty thousand lives. Rutgers University Press. ISBN 9780813530413. Zebrowski cites (p. 278) an English translation of an original French account, a primary source: "Le cataclysme de la Martinique — 2e article". Bulletin de la Société astronomique de France et revue mensuelle d'astronomie, de météorologie et de physique du globe. 16: 345–365. 1902. On p. 352 we read that Léon Compère-Léandre, "one of the survivors", was interviewed in the beginning of June. He is described as appearing "vigorous and robust". This primary source does not provide explicit information about his condition, and it is possible to still succumb from burns after having initially survived for four weeks, but the patient would then normally not be in a condition to be described as having a "vigorous" aspect. The English translation mentioned (Angelo Heilprin (1905). Mont Pelée and the tragedy of Martinique: a study of the great catastrophes of 1902, with observations and experiences in the field. J.B. Lippincott Company. pp. 119–120.) does not provide further details.  --Lambiam 11:53, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
