Arabs vs. Arabic people[edit]

The name of this article (List of Famous Arabic People) appears to be incorrect. In Arab (disambiguation) we read:

Arab refers to a person of Arabic background. Arabic is the Arabic language, written in the Arabic alphabet (properly an abjad). Arabic numerals are the numbers 0 through 9. Arabian is the Arabian Peninsula.

The above accords with normal educated English usage. The article List of Famous Arabs currently redirects here, but it appears the redirect should be reversed. Anyone object? --Yumegusa (talk) 11:50, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have fixed that now, thank you for the note. mizzo (talk) 15:21, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Maimonides - Musa Bin Maimun (scientist, Andalus)[edit]

I think he's called the most famous Arab jew so why not have him listed in here? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.229.236.216 (talk) 22:38, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Maimonides was a Jew not an Arab. The term Arab Jew is a controversial one not generally used, to describe Jews from the Arab World.--Yumegusa (talk) 00:02, 5 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion for improvement[edit]

To improve this article's useability and informativeness, I'd suggest adding a little more information to each list item, e.g. provenance and century/era. So, for example, I'd propose

in place of

Any comments? --Yumegusa (talk) 17:17, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I take the lack of dissent as agreement. I'll begin the task shortly. All assistance appreciated. --Yumegusa (talk) 14:59, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll work on it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Miia (talkcontribs) 10:44, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I actually added a one line bio for each item. Please tell me if it looks good or should we maintain the usage of parentheses with simple adjectives for era, nationality and occupation. Miia (talk) 19:52, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've begun the task with the first section, bringing it somewhat into line with comparable articles on WP. I think we need to realphabetize based on most commonly known name, which is normally surname (family name) for modern people (for example, Amin Maalouf would be normally listed under M rather than A). Any comments on this? --Yumegusa (talk) 10:26, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Egyptians[edit]

Lanternix, as part of a long campaign to disassociate Egyptians from any Arab identity, has removed every Egyptian from this list. Included in that are Gamal Abdel Nasser, Asmahan, and Umm Kulthum. Here are a few sources calling each an Arab:

  • Gamal Abdel Nasser - [1]
  • Asmahan - [2]
  • Umm Kulthum - [3]

nableezy - 03:07, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Another:
  • Ahmed Zewail - [4]
I will be re-adding any name that I can source. nableezy - 03:15, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Each of the names I re-added has a source explicitly calling that person an Arab. Individual feelings about whether or not Egyptians are Arabs are not relevant here, and as such are not valid reasons to remove names from the list. Currently, the only entries that have sources saying the person is an Arab are from those removed earlier. I trust that the addition of these sources ends this dispute and we will see no more tendentious removals of Egyptians from this list. nableezy - 03:58, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This apparently has come up again. IP, what is your justification for indiscriminately removing Egyptians from this list? Egyptians are commonly considered Arab, which is not simply an ethnic classification. nableezy - 18:18, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Qasim Amin is from turkish decent
Zenobia ancient syrian queen (no sources for any arab origin)
Mitch Daniels is an assyrian (assyrian =/= arab)
Elias Zerhouni is algerian (in algeria there is berber and arabs )
Danny nucci Austrian-American actor
Michael Ansara (Syriac)
And all moroccan and algerian and tunisian (if there is no sources that they are arabs. So they are not!!)

A history of the Arabs (The Arabs: A History by Eugene Rogan includes Qasim Amin (see here). Here is another source calling him an Arab nationalist. You need to understand that your view on what "Arab" includes is just that, your view, and that view is in dispute with reliable sources. Please desist from removing anything you personally dislike. nableezy - 18:34, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Mitch Daniels as an Arab-American
Elias Zerhouni as an Arab-American
Please stop enforcing your personal POV over easily available sources. nableezy - 18:42, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

So an egyptian mother makes him arab ? checkthis and this105.156.239.20 (talk) 18:46, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No, reliable sources calling him an Arab is what makes him an Arab on Wikipedia. nableezy - 18:49, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Split[edit]

Impossibly large list There are presently thousands of articles on Arabs on Wikipedia--listing them all in one place would be too long. This should be located at Lists of Arabs and provide an index of manageable lists such as List of Arab Americans and List of Arab scientists. —Justin (koavf)TCM☯ 18:43, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal[edit]

Proposal to merge the page "List of arabophones" to here. Given that this article is "a list of notable Arabic-speaking people", the other article is redundant and should be removed, especially given that this article is more thorough. The other article is a relatively random and poorly-sourced list; some of the entries are red links or otherwise of questionable notability. --Chumash11 (talk) 16:02, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose; the topics are quite different. By analogy, one can speak English without being English. Klbrain (talk) 16:53, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
