Notability criteria[edit]

I have removed all of the red linked entries from the list, per WP:NLIST. If you believe any of the entries are notable, please write the article first. Thanks. - SummerPhD (talk) 13:15, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This list is too long and some of these people are not especially notable. VP of HR at Air BnB? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1002:B023:8D8A:B50A:50B9:ABDD:DD7C (talk) 19:35, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The growing opening section of this "list of alumni", sourced entirely to Wharton, is a sales brochure for the advantages of being a Wharton alumnus. The list of alumni is not "the world's largest alumni network (which is) one of the most powerful benefits of a Wharton degree". The list of alumni does not "provide networking opportunities, in addition to a variety of mentoring programs to promote career advancement." The list of alumni does not "partners with its alumni clubs to mount three annual Global Alumni Forums around the world", it does not hold "conferences attract many leading figures in business, academia and public policy from the international community", it does not "offers lifelong learning opportunities ... as well as educational resources for the international community", it does not publish "the Wharton Magazine, the school's alumni publication,... four times per year, not taking special issues into account... available in print and as a digital publication, and issues are mailed automatically to all alumni", it does not run "Knowledge@Wharton, the online journal of the Wharton School".

If you would like to start an article on the Wharton School alumni network, this material might belong there (with independent reliable sources, of course). It certainly belongs on Penn's website (heck, that's where we got it from). It is not, however, descriptive of this list of alumni. - SummerPhD (talk) 21:47, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not quite sure I understand the WP:COATRACK issues. This appears to me to be just like every other university's list of noted paople, generally alumni. This kind of list is also noted in WP:UNIGUIDE. Do you see a difference between this article and the other articles of list of alumni? There was some promotional wording at the beginning of the article, but I believe that is all gone now. Should the tag remain? Thanks, Bahooka (talk) 23:13, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This article is supposed to be a list of alumni. The introductory section does not discuss a list of alumni, instead it is something Wharton would spit out in a tri-fold brochure for their table at a high school's college fair, arguing for the benefit of belonging to the schools alumni association ("one of the most powerful benefits of a Wharton degree", etc.). Despite UNIGUIDE's insistence that the list "must still fulfill the notability policy of receiving significant coverage in reliable sources independent of the university", the entire section is entirely sourced to Wharton. (The sock puppeteer polishing this turd seems unwilling to discuss their edits and the issue. I suppose a WP:SOCK case with a Check User will be necessary.) - SummerPhD (talk) 23:33, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I just reread the lead section, and more can be taken out. I see your point. Also, I've seen some lists where a reference is required for each entry to show the connection to the university. All of these are notable because they have Wikipedia articles. I think I was able to remove the ones that linked to different people with the same name. Once the article gets more cleaned up, maybe it will be time to take off that particular tag. In the meantime, thanks for watching for the sock or meatpuppets. Bahooka (talk) 23:38, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I'm willing to bet I have the puppeteer identified. It seems to be an established editor. Maybe there's a reasonable explanation for all the socks, but I can think of any. Any guesses? - SummerPhD (talk) 23:50, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Class project? People in the Alumni Association office? I just wiped out a bunch of the booster stuff about the alumni assn. Bahooka (talk) 23:53, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sock SPA[edit]

Wow. It looks like this article is being heavily edited by someone wishing to avoid discussion and/or sanctions. A series of user names have been created, used once (to edit this article), then discarded. Single purpose accounts are not necessarily a problem (in isolation). Sock puppets are a problem.

This is not going to be pretty. If there is one individual or group of individuals involved here, please discuss the issue, disclose how the accounts are related, why so many have been created and any potential conflict of interest you may have. Otherwise, we have a number of ways of blocking you from editing the article, uncovering the connection between the accounts and documenting where you have edited from. Your choice. - SummerPhD (talk) 13:25, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Shockingly (not) my tagging the article as being based on primary sources (the entire intro section) and a coatrack (discussed above) was reverted by -- wait for it -- a brand new user name that has only been used to edit this article. Said editor has "verified" that the bot that adds dates to templates and I are the same person.[1] Allow me to clarify: I am a person, the bot is not, therefore we are not the same person. I guess it's time for page protection. - SummerPhD (talk) 02:15, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The article is now semi-protected. I have restored the tags and material removed by the recurring sock. If they figure out how to get around that, of course, full protection is the next step, along with a sock case to unmask the editor. Discussion for the issue has already been started above. Failing guideline/policy-based discussion in the next few days, I will address the problems in the article. - SummerPhD (talk) 12:37, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
One warning to the editor for that last edit. Next is the WP:SOCK case. - SummerPhD (talk) 23:07, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Since the clean out, another SPA showed up to remove the now irrelevant COATRACK tag and add some sources for a few individual entries. That user, Watt70volt, has been blocked as a sock. - SummerPhD (talk) 05:22, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Also blocked as a sock: Firstthingfirst, AccurateSHOt1st, Objectivity65, Bronzeminez, StatisticsMA, Iamsoawesomeness, ArticlesofInc, AccurateSHOt1st, Medpt7mm, OJmimOH, IDdjud, ShoreThang, Warnsutter, etc. There are a few more out there that are likely socks. We can block them if needed.
At this point, I'm going to take a look at all of the changes made. A lot of them are unsourced and that will need to be fixed. I'm betting a few convicted felons may have been toned down, disappeared or otherwise been whitewashed. They are who they are and the article should reflect that. - SummerPhD (talk) 05:36, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
For instance, User:8infinite88 rings a loud bell. I'm thinking we might need something more than merely blocking socks. Comments from the socks before we get into it? - SummerPhD (talk) 17:35, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Largest Business School Alumni Association[edit]

Wharton claims they are the largest at 92,000 alumni, the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University claims they have the most business school alumni at almost 100,000 living alumni. We do not have a secondary source on either claim. I recommend we just put the number of alumni rather stating it is the largest business school alumni network in the world until a third-party citation is found. Bahooka (talk) 23:23, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The entire introductory section seems to be the work of an undergrad intern. As all of it discusses the alumni association instead of the topic of this article, most of it is going to be ditched any way. Feel free to remove anything you have an issue with. - SummerPhD (talk) 23:10, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. is not a Wharton School Alumni[edit]

I removed Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. from the list of Wharton School alumni under Government, Law and Nonprofit. While Marcos did take an MBA degree at Wharton School, he was unable to complete the course because of his election as Vice Governor of Ilocos Norte in 1980.[1]Lawrence Ruiz (talk) 10:03, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed addition to notable alumni[edit]

Hello! For purposes of disclosure: I am an employee of S&P Global and I have been asked to edit this page on behalf of Douglas Peterson, President & CEO.

Doug has requested that he be added as a notable alumni of this university. I do not believe this would be an uncontroversial edit -- Doug is a respected industry thought leader and and S&P Global is a major publicly traded financial information/analytics company. His own Wikipedia entry is at Douglas L. Peterson

Recommended text for the bullet point: "S&P Global President and CEO Douglas Peterson (WG'1985)"

I am not picky on positioning, but as the alumni look to be in order of industry Doug should probably be either in the Finance section (under "Marcos Galperin, founder and CEO of Mercado Libre") or the technology section (under "Jeff Weiner, CEO, LinkedIn")

References supporting change: His own Wikipedia listing his affiliation is here: [2]; Doug's bio on the S&P Global website listing his affiliation: [3]; An article from Fortune Magazine discussing his affiliation when he originally took the role of President of S&P Global Ratings, then known as Standard & Poors; [4]; and an article from Wharton Magazine from when Doug was offered the role as president & CEO of S&P Global, then known as McGrawHill Financial [5]

Thank you so much for your consideration! Tracy at S&P (talk) 19:40, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Additions[edit]

Hello everyone,

I've recently started to add / improve the notable alumni and faculty member lists. As this is a rather well developed list already and all of you have put a lot of effort into it, I don't just want to come in unannounced and add / make additions (that might not be appreciated or accidentally violate any previous discussions).

I've tried to read through most of the previous discussions / talks etc. - but sometimes sth. still slips through... therefore I just wanted to quickly announce that I will do some work around here in the coming days / weeks and if you have any tips / comments: please let me know.

I'm just here to improve and always appreciate feedback!

Best regards from good old Germany, --RuhriJörg 17:31, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.: Good to see you again,  Spintendo  - whenever I cross your path, there's good articles to be found :)--RuhriJörg 17:35, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Intro tag sourcing[edit]

Hello all,

Judging from the fact that no one has yet responded to my recent message, I'm assuming that there's not all too much going on around here at the moment.

I will go forward and just remove the intro tag about sourcing - as it seems to me that the issue has been sufficiently addressed since 2014!

If there's good reasons to disagree, please revert and let's discuss it here :)

All the best, --RuhriJörg 15:04, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Order of headlines[edit]

Dear all,

Working on the article for the past few days, I feel like the categories could need some updating / improvements. I have started re-structuring the sections today... understanding that an article like this might want to have the "politics" or a Trump face at the beginning ;) But I think we should get this in alphabetic order. What do you think?

Cheers, --RuhriJörg 09:47, 14 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Table?[edit]

Hi all, As I just revisited the page after a while today, I thought about adding tables to each section. Columns could be: name, notable for, position / company (if applicable), reference. That way all of the alumni would be sortable and allow to quickly find someone specific. I have seen both, normal lists like currently and table-lists. Thoughts? --RuhriJörg 10:51, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
