Split and rewrite

I just did a major rewrite of the pages Mithraism, Mithras, and Mithra. For lack of time, I have to stop now; please have a look and fix as approriate.

AFAIK, there is only a thin connection (little more than a borrowed name) between the Persian "Mithra" and the Roman "Mithras", so it seems best to have two separate pages for them, with due explanations and pointers.

Presently all the information on Roman "Mithras" is in a section of the Mithraism page, so that Mithras is little more than a disambiguation page. Perhaps this is OK, or perhaps that section could be extracted and made into a full Mithras page; I can see advantages and disadvantages in either choice.

There are many rough spots in these pages, especially Mithraism. The explanation of strological "ages" and precession is clearly broken, but I do not know enough of astronomy to fix it. Some of the details of Mithraism sound highly suspicious, and may be just extreme "new age" beliefs or unproven speculation. As for the information on the Mithra page, I have absolutely no knowledge of Zoroastrism so it is just the original contents (minus what seemed to be Roman-related stuff).

I may have lost some links, especially to the foreign Wikipedias. I may try to fix some of the links-to-here later today. Thanks for the patience...

The bulk of the info on this page is Roman-related (birth from rock, Phrygian cap, etc.). IMHO this is much worse than the status quo ante. Bacchiad 09:14, 22 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:HermaiosMithra.jpg

Image:HermaiosMithra.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

One Reference?

I did a fair bit of digging for more sourced information on Mithra from encyclopedic sources, but someone called Fullstop insisted on re-writing the article again to his liking with now only a single reference remaining on the page. The information I accumulated is from respected experts and scholarly writings. These are folk who have studied the evolution of languages and mythology as they flow from one culture to the next as nations were conquered and cultures shifted. Hence the entry for Mithra's traits being transfered to Apollo, which was based on the movement of Alexander the Great when he conquered the Persians. This was not original research, rather sourced and valid historical information.

This was my original reason for un-undoing all the hard work I put in to the article. I would like some explanaition for the mass deletion of this information from Fullstop. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Knowledge Incarnate (talkcontribs) 02:37, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

After re-reading the article I can see that some of what I mentioned was preserved at the very bottom (where I did not expect to find it) but the references are still missing. -Knowl -<(I am questing for Knowledge!) (talk) 05:49, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
