Disappearance—Mysterious?[edit]

I removed the "mysterious" from the infobox. I guess you can call it "unexplained", because some details how the plane went down are unknow, but I can't see anything mysterious about the disappearance. Plane flighs into very bad weather, later some parts of debris are found on the lake surface. That's a tragedy, but no mystery.--ospalh (talk) 13:50, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Northwest Orient or just Northwest?[edit]

I realize there's already a re-direct for 'Northwest Airlines Flight 2501' (without the 'Orient') to this article, but...

The official Civil Aeronautics Board accident report only refers to the airline as Northwest, not Northwest Orient. The websites that the article links to also use Northwest, except for the Aviation Safety Network. ASN seems to incorrectly use Northwest Orient for incidents that happened years before the airline added Orient to its name. This wouldn't be the first time I've noticed errors—minor ones—on ASN, either, so it shouldn't be treated as the final word.

Here on wikipedia there's precedence for using just Northwest in earlier crashes before the name change: Northwest Airlines Flight 4422 (which ASN calls Northwest Orient Flight 4222), Northwest Airlines Flight 2 and Northwest Airlines Flight 1 to name a few. So do we go with the CAB and swap the article and re-direct names, or just let things stay the way they are? I'm leaning towards changing in the interests of accuracy, but I realize it could also just be treated as being too nit-picky by some. --Itsfullofstars (talk) 10:12, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am not an aviation enthusiast and do not know the facts regarding the airline name change and when it was made but I support use of the correct name of the airline at the time of the incident in the article title. I understand the argument that article titles should be based upon their most commonly known name but I prefer accuracy over convenience in an encyclopedia. Perhaps the compromise is to indicate in the article a footnote/reference about the name of the airline at the time of the incident and the subsequent change(s) made to it, regardless of which version of the title is ultimately confirmed. I do not have access to that information, otherwise I would make the entry myself. Newwhist (talk) 13:36, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Reference/quote date[edit]

As of my viewing on Nov 20/13, the date of the New York Times quote and the first cited reference differ. Do they represent different editions of the NYT or is one (or both ) incorrect? I have no access to NYT to verify myself. Newwhist (talk) 13:12, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"disappeared"[edit]

The lede states that the aircraft "disappeared". The infobox refers to an "Unexplained disappearance". By any reasonable definition, neither is true. The aircraft was flying over Lake Michigan when it was lost from radar. Wreckage of the plane was found in Lake Michigan. The reasons why it crashed in the lake may be unexplained, but there doesn't seem to be any sort of 'disappearance' involved at all, since the wreckage was found where the aircraft was last seen on radar. 86.133.149.192 (talk) 19:39, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
