'History of the university == The University was originally founded by Ali al-Sanusi of the Muslim political-religious tariqa the Senussi in 1961 as an Islamic University and learning center, specifically teaching scripture reading and interpretation, it was named the University of Mohammed bin Ali al-Sanusi.

After the 1969 Coup the University changed its name to Omar Al-Mukhtar University after the Libyan resistance leader Omar Mukhtar. in 1975 it was reformed as a scientific institute and was included in the University of Benghazi (formerly Garyounis University), the University was based around its College of agriculture. By 1984 it had grown large enough to be independent once again.

Omar Al-Mukhtar University awards the following academic degrees: - BSc, leave Graduate (Masters) and leave minute (PhD), the Libyan government offers graduates scholarships study for their Masters and PHD in developed countries.
