I think this article is related to the articles on Japanning and toleware. If so, that may contradict the statement that tole painting began in 18th century New England. Rogov (talk) 17:35, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rosemaling?[edit]

This article seems to overlap or even contradict the article on Rosemaling, perhaps these articles should be merged? Decorative painting has been used in Churches in Norway since the 17th century, see for instance this article on Dale Church. --Erik den yngre (talk) 19:14, 22 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology[edit]

Some explanation of 'tole' would be useful. Since Wiki says that tole peinte is French for 'painted sheet metal', I can only assume that the word tole means the same, and was adopted at a relatively recent date due to the similarity with the French artwork. But this also means that traditional artists before the 20th century would not have called their work 'tole painting', if they in fact even had a word for it.
