Overview[edit]

Konak can be separated into two unofficial parts: the western part, containing many administrative buildings for the Konak district, city of İzmir and the İzmir Province along with large open public spaces, and the eastern part, with many narrow streets filled with markets and shops as well as the famous Kemeraltı bazaar.

Government[edit]

Konak is directly under the jurisdiction of the Konak district Municipality (Turkish: Konak Belediyesi), which is responsible for public services such as garbage removal.

Transportation[edit]

Mustafa Kemal Coastal Boulevard is the main throughway in Konak, running on a north-south axis on the west side of the neighborhood along the shore. The route heads north to Alsancak and south, later turning west, to Balçova. The Konak Tunnel, opened in 2015, is another main route in and out of the neighborhood. The tunnel connects to the D.300, which in turn runs to Gaziemir, in south İzmir. Fevzi Paşa Boulevard constitutes as the northern border of the neighborhood, beginning at an intersection with Cumhuriyet Boulevard, the route runs east to Basmane station.

Access to the İzmir Metro is available via Konak station, located south of Konak Square. Trains run to west to Balçova and east to Bornova.

The Konak Tram, which is scheduled to open by the end of 2017, will service Konak İskele station. Trams will run southwest to Balçova and northeast to Halkapınar, via Alsancak.
