Civil Engineering

Civil engineers design, build, supervise, operate, and maintain construction projects and systems in the public and private sector, including roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and systems for water supply and sewage treatment. Many civil engineers work in design, construction, research, and education.

History

Civil Engineering has been an aspect of life since the beginnings of human existence. Civil Engineering goes all the way back to when the Romans developed civil structures throughout their empire.

Influential People

John Smeaton is the first self-proclaimed civil engineer. He is known as the father of Civil Engineering. His biggest contributions happened during the Industrial Revolution. If you don’t know what the Industrial Revolution was, it was a period during which rural societies in Europe and America became industrial and urban. John Smeaton is famous for the windmills and the waterwheels. He showed the direct correlation between pressure and velocity for objects moving in the air.

Man made Island

Civil engineering projects continue to dominate headlines across the world. From the world’s tallest building to the biggest man-made island. There are a lot of big and beautiful buildings across the world. Those wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for Civil Engineers. The Palm Island that was constructed in 2014 in Dubai is one of the most outstanding projects known to world. This resort island stands as a major civil engineering achievement because everything about it was constructed from sea floor up. The sand was shaped in a way to resemble a palm tree.

To get a basic understanding of civil engineering, they deal with the planning, the construction as well as the maintenance of public buildings that are related to water, civilization and even the earth. This can include working with structures such as bridges, water supplies and trains, etc. Engineering has many complicated levels to it.
