World War III, or the Third World War was a series of wars from the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the end of the Russian invasion of Europe. Every nation on Earth, including Lunar colonies was in someway involved in these conflicts, the wars were fought by several factions including the; European Union, NATO, Collective Security Treaty Organization, Axis of Resistance , and the British Empire and allies, World War III also led to further developments in military, space, and Artificial intelligence. It led to about 100,000,000 casualties, the largest in history, millions were killed by mass starvation, genocide, terrorism, and chemical warfare. The war did not have a clear winner, the United States and Russia collapsed in independent warlords, China and the State of Britannia became economic powerhouses while Europe had a far-right and economic revival.

The causes of the war vary, some contributing factors are the rise of the far-right in Europe, the China–United States trade war, the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, and the Iran–Saudi Arabia proxy conflict. The war is generally considered to have begun on 24 February 2022, when Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, invaded Ukraine, NATO and many other countries sanctioned Russia for the attacks. Meanwhile, in the Levant, an organization known as Hamas which had been governing the Gaza Strip launched an attack on Israel, the war lasted for a year before Hamas surrendered. In Europe,Ukraine had fallen to Russian forces by the autumn of 2024 which caused a political divide in the West, leading to many far-right parties (e.g. Our Homeland Movement, Alternative for Germany, and Confederation of the Polish Crown) taking power over the continent. The United States re-elected Trump in 2024 leading to temporary peace under his rule, after he however died in office, China used this as an opportunity to invade Taiwan, the U.S. was in political turmoil as an interregnum period began and the island swiftly fell to Chinese hands. China has become the world's most powerful nation with the largest army and economy. Yemeni Houthis in 2029 restarted the Red Sea crisis and a coalition was formed led by major world nations to destroy the movement, Saudi Arabia launched a full invasion and forced the Houthi movement to migrate towards the east.

In 2031, Iran–Saudi Arabia relations reached their worst, leading a group of Hezbollah assassins to kill Mohammed bin Salman, starting the Great Oriental War. Iran first attempted their nuclear warhead on Tel Aviv in Israel, a Saudi ally which was intercepted, what followed was a monarchist revolt in Iran where the supreme leader Mohammad Mokhber was overthrown, restoring Pahlavi Iran.

Many years after, in 2059, Russia occupied the Suwałki Gap and declared total war against NATO, during this, the President of Russia declared that nuclear weapons were a possibility. Russia quickly occupied the Baltics but lost Kaliningrad. The Russian president had been tyrannical, and with his declaration of total war refused to pay his ministers and soldiers, the Russian Armed Forces was hugely suffering mass desertions, attrition, and mutiny, causing them to lose all conquered territories. Meanwhile, the British Empire, a new economic and military powerhouse rivaling China declared war on Russia and sent its troops to the frontlines, which decimated the poorly trained and suffering Russian troops, the President of Russia sued for peace, leading to civil war and total anarchy

Great Oriental War[edit]

Iran and Saudi Arabia since the late 70s had been in a tedious and prolonged proxy conflict, where they would use their own puppets and allies to fight each other, however, after the Second Red Sea crisis and the end of the Houthi takeover in Yemen, both nations seemed they were on the verge of war. Hezbollah was one of those Iranian-backed militant groups, they have been operating in Lebanon since the Lebanese Civil War and had been gaining more autonomy from the Axis of Resistance ever since the fall of the Houthi movement, this was due to incompetency by the Mokhber cabinet after refusing to help the Houthis in their crisis, Iran had been profiting from these trade routes which the Houthi movement had been disrupting. Hezbollah also had been outraged after Saudi Arabia had formed an official military alliance with Israel, which they considered a violation of the Islamic law Sharia, they had constantly begged Iran to launch military and nuclear attacks on Saudi Arabia. Hezbollah, however, had planned to cause war with the two states, to gain their own personal prestige and empowerment within the Levant, when the King of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman visited Beirut in February 2031, Hezbollah coordinated the assassination of the king, on 1 February 2031, Mohammed bin Salman was fatally shot 6 times by an unknown Jihadist, and Hezbollah claimed full responsibility, Saudi Arabia immediately declared war on the Axis of Resistance on the 2nd of February, beginning the Great Oriental War.

Nuclear program of Iran, first detonation at Dasht-e Lut

Iran had been angered by Hezbollah for doing this, but they were prepared for any conflict which they had been waiting for 50 years, Iran has been confident of their nuclear program which was viewed successful in the eyes of the government, but was flawed and rushed, Iran on the 3rd of February launched its only as thermonuclear nuclear warhead straight to Jerusalem. The Iron Dome, which had been strengthened with massive funding from the Western world intercepted the attack near Syria, which devastated their own self-esteem. The world was shocked by what Iran attempted and its allies, NATO, Collective Security Treaty Organization, and BRICS all heavily sanctioned Iran, causing high prices and a famine resulting in the deaths of 1,500,000. The Saudis were enraged by the killing of Mohammed bin Salman and so Saudi Arabia sent the Saudi Arabian Army to launch a river campaign through the Tigris and Euphrates in Shia-controlled Iraq, which the anarchic state barely handled, the Saudis committed war crimes and genocide against Shia civilians in Iraq which caused the death of over 5,500,000 Shia muslims, the deadliest atrocity in the war. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq established a massive army to meet the Saudis at Kufa, the Saudis barely won the battle as attrition and civilian resistance devastated supply networks along with chemical bombings by Iran.

Artesh launches assault on Samarra

Israel launched a brutal campaign against Hezbollah, on 30 July with the following organization being completely eradicated after a complete Mossad assassination of all major leaders and their cities wiped off the face of the Earth by a devastating siege. Saudi Arabia continued advancing, while other reserve troops occupied Qatar and Bahrain, Iran suffered tremendous rioting and protesting leading to the mass mutiny and desertions of the Iranian army. On 19 August, the Royal Saudi Navy launched an amphibious landing at Hormozgan province, this was the last straw for the Iranian peoples, which launched a civil war against Mohammad Mokhber, the army simply surrendered to the rioters, leading to Iran restoring the Pahlavi dynasty.

The Space and Polar Wars[edit]

The Antarctic Treaty and related agreements, collectively known as the Antarctic Treaty System, regulated international relations concerning Antarctica, Earth's only continent without a native human population. It was the first arms control agreement established during the Cold War, designating the continent as a scientific preserve, establishing freedom of scientific investigation, and banning military activity; for the treaty system, Antarctica is defined as all the land and ice shelves south of 60°S latitude. Since September 2004, the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat, which implements the treaty system, has been headquartered in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The main treaty was opened for signature on 1 December 1959 and officially entered into force on 23 June 1961. The original signatories were the 12 countries active in Antarctica during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) of 1957–58: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, France, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States. These countries had established over 55 Antarctic research stations for the IGY, and the subsequent promulgation of the treaty was seen as a diplomatic expression of the operational and scientific cooperation that had been achieved.

Colonization[edit]

In 2048 however, the Antarctic Treaty was up for renewal, and when that year was reached, the nations that had claims on Antarctica without the United Nations' permission began to colonize the frozen wasteland, as Climate change would have melted out the ice sheet, revealing valuable resources like Uranium and Zinc. The United States, which had been eagerly awaiting an opportunity to exploit this continent's natural resources set out the 10th Mountain Division, an elite light infantry division, experienced in this mountainous and tundra climate to solidify American holdings in Marie Byrd Land, which had been unclaimed ever since, the division along with other support units established the first Antarctic military headquarters, nicknamed Fort Boreas, after the Greek god Boreas. The United Kingdom, which had territorial disagreements with other claimants began to send naval vessels to the area, deteriorating relations with the nations Chile and Argentina who had claimed British territory, Chile (who had their own claims) on 2 February 2049 declared war against Argentina for Antarctica.

Chilean-Argentine War[edit]

After the declaration of war, the Chilean frigate Almirante Williams (FF-19) launched bombardments on the city of Ushuaia, on the 3rd of February the Argentines mobilized the Argentine Army and attacked Chilean cargo ships, a week after constant bombardments by both sides, Chile launched an attack on the city of Ushuaia led by the Lautaro Special Operations Brigade, on the 11th of February, Chilean forces broke through the civilian and small army resistance and occupied the city. On the 12th, Argentina issued a cry for help to South America, Bolivia responded and declared war against Chile.

2 days later, Bolivian troops captured several coastal cities in Chile while the Chilean Navy continued to bombard Antarctic research stations and military bases. On the 16th, the United Kingdom, despite previous tensions, helped Argentina and attacked major Chilean Antarctic fortresses, Chile, now surrounded announced conditional surrender on the 20th of February, Argentina occupied Chilean Antarctic Territory and ceded former claims to the United Kingdom, balancing territories.

Chinese Exploration[edit]

Li Guangsu saluting the Flag of China on the Moon

2051 was a significant advancement in space exploration, Sino-American scientists after many tests were able to establish the first permanent Lunar post in the Sverdrup crater. This was in co-operation with SpaceX and NASA, the two astronauts Li Guangsu and Jessica Watkins arrived on 17 March 2051 from the Luna Program. The program was mainly directed by China, despite working on it with the United States which caused great worry across the states, with their control over space exploration being severely diminished. In hopes of establishing peace, China and America agreed to declare the lunar base an international zone, with other space organizations sending their astronauts to expand the base.
