AIM[edit]

Do you have AIM or something? Just wanted to talk about something. If not, email will do. Thanks. Voice-of-All 19:47, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

I don't have AIM, sorry - but I've enabled my email for you. Looking forward to your note! -- User:RyanFreisling @ 20:00, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
Don't suppose you've IRC, Ryan, by any chance? It'd be kinda cool to chat sometime - Alison 20:02, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
Hmm! I've done IRC from time to time - while it's really useful sometimes I must confess I have a pet peeve against the 'meta' of conducting wiki business over IRC. But for casual talky-talk, it's not a bad idea. Which server/channel should I hit? irc.wikipedia.org / #wikipedia?
You can get me on freenode.net (where the wiki channels also reside). My own room is "#AllieWiki" :) - Alison 20:14, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the note[edit]

What is 'DOD'? Is this article being discussed on any adminstrator boards? I looked for the talk list 'Wiki-en' that is supposed to be public, where administrators talk about whats going on, but could not find it. Do you have the link? Thanks. Bmedley Sutler 23:22, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Hmm. First off, 'DoD' = Department of Defense. The incidents are 2 years or so old, so there's little active discussion right now - but if I can dig up anything beyond those links to help clarify, I will - but the links I provided should serve well. Here's a link to an online wiki-en archive (not sure if this is comprehensive, etc.): [2] :) -- User:RyanFreisling @ 23:44, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! This summer it's mostly lifeguarding and suntanning - but a lot of reading (just finished Fredrick Douglass' autobiography). And you? Having a good summer (that is, if you're in the northern hemisphere)? -- User:RyanFreisling @ 00:16, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Karl Rove[edit]

Hey Ryan, I am going to TRY not to edit war with you there. OK? I have little political interest and usually don't like to edit political articles because I am sure there are endless battles and nonsense going on. I stick to articles about bios and the Middle East since they never have any differences of opinion :). Anyways, --Tom 13:32, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

That sounds eminently agreeable to me. Most of all, I hope as you get to know my work a bit more you'll recognize that I'm not one of those users your userbox would seek to 'STOP'. :) Anyway, be well. -- User:RyanFreisling @ 13:37, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
Fair enough. Cheers! --Tom 13:41, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

NuclearUmpf[edit]

What do you remember about the connection you claimed about NuclearUmpf and Rex? I was wondering if what I posted here refreshes any of those memories....--MONGO 18:47, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

It was a long time ago, but I kept good notes. I'll see what I can dig up. Most of all, from this latest SoD = NU/Z0 episode I'm just shaking my head at the pathetic life a serial WP troll must lead... -- User:RyanFreisling @ 19:00, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Unconditional apology[edit]

Hi RyanFreisling, I would like to apologize for my recent behavoir that was directed at you. It was wrong. My edit summaries crossed the line and were uncalled for. I hope you accept this and wish you the best in your continuing good faith contributions to this project. --Tom 13:07, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Of course, your apology is happily accepted. And I also wish you well and will extend every good faith to you in the future. Thanks again, Tom. -- User:RyanFreisling @ 14:29, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

moved comments[edit]

Hi Ryan sorry not to include a link but could you look at my question about what to do with some moved comments on the CSloat RFC page before we close? Bigglove 00:06, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for reply. I will wait for a few others to weigh in as I too don't want to be looked askance at. Bigglove 01:33, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

A request[edit]

Ryan would you mind striking out/redacting this comment? Let's just agree to disagree without you throwing straw men at me. It's not helpful. Thanks. <<-armon->> 06:02, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Armon if you disagree with her representation of your words, can you please clarify? I posted a question about exactly that based on my reading of your comments which was very similar to Ryan's reading. If we are misreading your comments I am glad to hear it, but I would like to better understand the point you want to make there. csloat 06:19, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
No, I'm comfortable with what I wrote and will leave it as is. You just finished saying that WP:AGF doesn't apply to csloat, because you have 'evidence to the contrary', and that there's nowhere for you to go but ArbCom. I've stated my opinion that such an approach is unfortunate and that I strenuously disagree, but that ArbCom will at least involve an examination of the editing behavior of all of the disputants. Bring it to ArbCom if you seriously think that's the right way to resolve your dispute in WP's interest. I'm done with this 'micro' discussion. -- User:RyanFreisling @ 06:42, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

For your information - Lara bran[edit]

Hi. In view of the behaviour of user:Lara bran in regards to the shemale article, I left a message on an admin's talk page. I think that you might want to have a look at both of those links. :) --AliceJMarkham 09:05, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Thank you very much. The passionfruit flower is undoubtedly one of my favourite flowers. Reminds me that it's spring here and I should try to start some passionfruit seedlings. Oh, and I've added the photo to the gallery in the passionfruit article. :) --AliceJMarkham 16:17, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
Wow, you know your flowers! :) Glad you like it. Surprisingly, New York is a great city for flower photography (I've got a few lovely shots to date). -- User:RyanFreisling @ 18:37, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

More[edit]

Obviously, as you're now aware, Vinay (AKA Lara bran (talk · contribs), a distortion of the name Brian Lara) has been unblocked. He even had the audacity to tell me (on my talk page) that he had not been blocked for disruptive editing, so I've left a summary there of his original blocking history. :)

The good news is that a new editor, Emile Carter (talk · contribs) de-lurked and even tracked me down on yahoo chat to talk me into coming back!

I'm back. :p

I don't suppose you use yahoo or IRC? --AliceJMarkham 12:43, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

The sock-drama-du-jour is irrelevant and is frankly easily ignored - what's important is that you're back. And I can arrange to be on IRC, under the same username - RyanFreisling. Look forward to seeing you there! -- User:RyanFreisling @ 13:05, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
I was more concerned with the admin making the unblock decision than the puppeteer. What IRC channel do you hide in? :) I spend a bit of time in #LGBTproject and I tried #wikipedia just now. I'm off to bed, though. Gotta get up for work in about 6 hours. --AliceJMarkham 14:48, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
I'm rarely on chat of any kind (school and work conspire to make it tough to stick around for long) but this week I'll make an extra effort to be online more often - I'll see you in either of those channels. And don't worry about the decision - if unblocking was indeed the wrong decision (as I believe the behavior at issue demonstrates) , we'll just see it happen all over again... so be dispassionate and determined and don't feed 'em. Sweet dreams. :) -- User:RyanFreisling @ 14:58, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

It was great to catch up in Yahoo chat. I must apologise, though, that I'm just not able to cope with Lara and what's going on in Shemale and Talk:Shemale and I'm going to have to leave it to others. I've left a note in the LGBT project's talk page asking for someone else to provide an impartial watch of that article and talk page. It's simply got too much for me. I'm going to have to ignore Lara entirely and try to get back to productive editing. --AliceJMarkham 02:53, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

I'll miss you on that article, but it's a good idea. What's happening there is far from a 'five alarm fire', so feel NO guilt about leaving it be. Concentrate on productive work and stay away from editors you feel are trolling you. Good work Alice! :) However, a request - please take a little time to organize your notes and diffs representing your view of the last few weeks with the editor in question if you wouldn't mind, as it might be necessary to examine and present them in some detail if the disruption escalates. Either way, I'll definitely be seeing you online... :) -- User:RyanFreisling @ 03:25, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

2004 Presidential Election[edit]

Usually, the administrator doesn't close a debate for at least a week. It's possible that more people will weigh in on the subject, but if it's no consensus, it will probably be renominated, so there's more debate that way. Right now, it doesn't look like a deletion is coming anytime soon. A lot of this probably can be merged into the other article in any event. Mandsford 16:42, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Hey Ryan[edit]

Real quickly, yeah I came back to see what's happening to the articles I worked on last year. Not sure how long I'll hang around. Things seem to have stabilized appreciably in my area(s). I'm so glad to see you're still here and still doing a great job. Keep'a going. You're a gem :^) Sending you lots of good vibes.
best regards, Arbo talk 05:33, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Hey Arbo! Good to hear form you. I must confess that I haven't been able to apply the kind of effort I had hoped to matters typographic here on WP but please come on back every now-and-then for a jug of lemonade and a nice talk about serifs and ligatures :) Take care, and I'm sending the same vibes right on back to you. -- User:RyanFreisling @ 13:16, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Ryan, o'Ryan, they named America's next modular spacecraft after you---Orion (spacecraft). Yay! WP Typography matters are humming along swell. I'm flat out working on a few font projects. Hugs (you're sweet)---Arbo talk 06:40, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

That's soo cool. Doesn't it use ion propulsion like in Star Trek? :) -- User:RyanFreisling @ 02:27, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Erm, not as such, no. You're probably thinking of another craft. I remember reading or hearing about an advanced Mars mission using ion propulsion. Orion is powered by "conventional" liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen and hydrazine type rocket motors, and it uses gypergolic motors which can restart in space. Hypergolic is a very reliable type of motor developed originally for Apollo's command, service and lunar modules:

Propulsion: "Like its Apollo predecessor, the Orion Service Module (SM) has a roughly cylindrical shape...tanks containing liquid hydrogen [LH2]. The spacecraft's main propulsion system is an Aerojet AJ-10 rocket engine, derived from the second stage of the Delta II rocket, and fueled by hypergolic propellants (nitrogen tetroxide and monomethyl hydrazine) drawn from spherical, helium-pressurized titanium tanks. The SM Reaction Control System (RCS), the spacecraft's maneuvering thrusters, will also be pressure-fed, and will use the same propellants. NASA believes the SM RCS would be able to act as a backup for a trans-Earth injection (TEI) burn in."

Replaceable fair use Image:Longlines.gif[edit]

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Longlines.gif. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Calliopejen1 22:41, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Not sure how the information should be re-obtained, another visit to EIRS? The image is an original graphic based on data from 2004's election data, and would thus be difficult to replace with a freely licensed image, if I understand correctly. -- User:RyanFreisling @ 00:40, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Not grammar![edit]

Thanks for endorsing the recent alterations at MOS's section on identity, Ryan. Let me just point out that the grammar was fine, though. You changed to this:

...that person's own expressed preference as to how this should be managed.

But this is also perfectly grammatical:

...that person's own express preference in how this should be managed.

See SOED, for express as an adjective:

... 2 Definitely stated and not merely implied; definitely formulated; explicit; unmistakable in import. LME.

As for in, we all say my preference in this matter. It's just the same usage. Still, I don't mind your little amendments!

Best wishes to you.

Hey there[edit]

I find myself in a nostalgic mood late at night, and when Woohookitty's user page popped up on my watchlist it made me think of the "old days" - of all the people who are gone - Kizzle, Derex, Katefan, MONGO...so I thought I'd drop by and say hello to one of the only people left (and one of my favourite Wikipedians). Hope things are well with you. Guettarda (talk) 07:55, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey there Guettarda - the feeling is quite mutual! I'm about to do a few weeks in Italy, and then a lovely East Coast summer awaits... are you in the Caribbean this summer? -- User:RyanFreisling @ 21:11, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
I wish I were. Nope - still in Oklahoma, looking forward to tornadoes and 110 F weather :) Have fun in Italy. Guettarda (talk) 00:44, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Yikes - I hope it's not 110°! It'll be nice-n-hot in Rome (75-80°), but not too hot. Take care until then! -- User:RyanFreisling @ 03:28, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Ryan goes to Italy yay![edit]

You're shooting some ancient Roman buildings while you're over there, right? What can I offer you as an incentive? Arbo visiting New York and North America is on the cards for 2009, but my schedule is grinding. I'll try to get over there. It's depressing to learn MONGO is no longer here. I guess this is the Wikipedia 2.0 phase we're in We've still got Wetman, and Ryan O'rion, and lots of other good people. I'm still here as a permanent overseer of typography and related stuff, and still committed to ancient classical buildings. -- Arbo talk 23:36, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

R-Bo: Name the building and I'll gladly take the pictures... take a look at my gallery page for some prior work and make any and all requests! Let me know when you're in NY and we'll have to catch up. A presto! :) -- User:RyanFreisling @ 01:49, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Great! Thanks so much for this. The assignment desk I set up on my user talk page is still there. Have a read. A few assignments are already laid out. Let me know if you need me to clarify any of the terminology or instructions. For starters, please revisit the Temple to Portunus and Temple of Hercules at the Forum Boarium and snap as many details as you can. I'm also very keen to get detail shots of the inscriptional lettering on what remains of the Temple of Saturn, and the octagonal ceiling coffers on the Basillica of Maxentius. Also the Temple of Vesta would be great---same instructions as for the others at the assignment desk.

Since you'll be in Italy and not just Rome, Hadrian's Villa is one of your top primary targets. It's not a long way from Rome. WP doesn't have many pics of this. A lot of classical architecture fans like me have a woody for this place. You seem to love Greek statues so you'll probably like the few statues left at Hadrian's Villa, assuming they are still there. While at Hadrian's place please get as many pics as you can of the circular Teatro Marittimo, assuming its custodians will let you near enuff to it. Hadrian's Villa article doesn't even mention this structure. It was part of the villa complex and one of the most amazing classical buildings evarr. WP readers deserve a complete article and many pictures of this mysterious wonder. I have a TASCHEN book with lots of info on it so I can put the article together no probs.

Second priorities:

  • Temple of Venus and Roma
  • Temple of Venus Genetrix
  • Temple of Apollo Sosianus
  • Temple of Hadrian

We have a handy list of temples in Rome here.

Also try: triumphal arches

  • Arch of Constantine
  • Arch of Septimius Severus
  • Arch of Titus
  • Arch of Janus

Mainly we need detail shots. WP has pics of most of these buildings but there's a general lack of pics showing architectural details close-up. These may be hard to shoot so your level best all I'm asking for.

The timing is perfect. You'll be in Italy in summer so I'm hoping you get some nice direct sunlight to bring out the sculptural detail and depth of building elements.

Questions: 1) Approximately how long do I have to organise this before you get there? 2) While you're in Italy and Rome will you have a portable computer and access to WP? -- Arbo talk 13:41, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

awesome advice - thank you so much! I'm leaving Thursday and will remain in Rome for about 3 weeks. Yes, there is internet at the friends' home where I stay and I'll have the means to check email, but no laptop of my own. I got the wider shots of the Boarium's Temple of Portunus, but it's hard to get close to the fenced-off buildings. Your assignments desk is a great source of instructions! Thanks! -- User:RyanFreisling @ 20:55, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Aw yeah, a r b o  is awesome awright, and I love me the classicals. You've got a Sony camera—what's its telephoto ability like? Will it take an accessory lens like, say a nice long focal length telephoto? If you don't already have one of those consider purchasing as a way of expanding your camera's range. If the people in charge simply won't let you get close to the fenced-off buildings, the next best thing we can do is use a longer lens. The longer the focal length the greater the need for using it on a solid tripod. Long lenses are usually slow (unless you buy the very dear faster variety), requiring long exposure times, so you really have to use a tripod to get true photographic sharpness.

Do you have an official Wikipedian ID card you can flash at monument staff and say, "Let me get closer to these things, I'm working for Jimbo and Arbo!" ; ^ ) --- Arbo talk 22:35, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Hehe - I wish :) I'm heading out today and I have a tripod... I'll do my darndest :) Have a great few weeks and see you soon! -- User:RyanFreisling @ 18:05, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Libration-noshad2b.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. FASTILYsock(TALK) 07:17, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

I'll read the specifics carefully, and I have the original creator/owner (and in this case, also the subject) of the picture send that email to wikipedia.org as you mention. Thank you Fastily! -- User:RyanFreisling @ 07:21, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
