Law is a system of rules created and enforced through social or governmental institutions to regulate behavior. It includes state-enforced rules (statutes) made by one or more legislators, decrees and regulations by heads of state, and precedent as established by judges; as well as legally binding contracts created by private individuals or entities. The creation of laws may be influenced by a constitution and the rights encoded therein. The law shapes politics, economics, history, and society and serves as a mediator of relations between people. The social science or theory of law is called jurisprudence.
