Vikram L. Dalal

"Dr. Dalal is Whitney Chair Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Iowa State University. He received his B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Bombay in India in 1964, and Ph.D. from Princeton University, also in EE, in 1969. He also holds a M.P.A. with focus on Economics from Princeton. Dr. Dalal has extensive research experience in both academia and industry, having worked as a research scientist at RCA Laboratories, and at several small companies. His academic experience includes working as a research scientist at University of Delaware’s Institute of Energy Conversion, and as Professor and Director of Microelectronics Research Center at Iowa State University. His expertise is in R&D on photovoltaic materials and devices. He has published over 180 papers and refereed proceedings articles, and also holds 12 U.S. patents. He is a Fellow of IEEE, American Physical Society and American Association for Advancement of Science."

Archana Sharma is a senior staff scientist at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. She is a senior particle physicist directly involved with CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid), one of the two particle detectors at the Large Hadron Collider, which was responsible for discovering the Higgs boson in 2012. She is the pioneer of simulations and experimentation on wire chambers, resistive plate chambers, and micro-pattern gaseous detectors.

Early life

Dr. Sharma was born on July 18, 1960 in Jhansi. Both her parents are teachers.

Following a graduate degree in Nuclear Physics from BHU Varanasi, India, Archana received her Particle Physics Ph.D. from Delhi University in 1989, followed by an “Instrumentation for High Energy Physics” D.Sc. from the University of Geneva in 1996. Sharma also earned an executive MBA degree from the International University in Geneva in 2001. She is an internationally recognized expert for her experimental work on gaseous detectors for research in High Energy Physics.

Career

She is the Distinguished Lecturer at IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society and a Senior of IEEE Dr. Sharma is also associated with Indian students and encourages the youth to move forward in this field. During the summers every year, students of Sarn in Gujarat invite food on their own home.
