Heya[edit]

Hi Brian :) We actually talked when you first arrived at WP, so I think we never actually met at LGB. But still it's cool that people bump into eachother in strange places :) Cheers, jacoplane 13:47, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

September Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

I would be delighted to have you help, but short of having you go through the references and make sure the commas and full stops are harmonised, I cannot think of anything. I will be sure to let to know if I do need help. Thankyou for your offer. Dev920 15:22, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Leo DiCaprio[edit]

I noticed you removed this source about him being raised Catholic - and that was definitely a good idea. Adherents.com is only reliable when it cites its sources. Those large lists of "Catholics" they have? They were copied word for word from Wikipedia's lists of Catholics (same for their Jewish, etc. list). In fact, a large majority of sources that aren't first-hand (first hand being interviews and the like) get their info directly from Wikipedia, which is exactly why we can't use them. :-) We've become our own worst enemy in that regard. Hi, Brian1979! There will be a Wikipedia Meetup in Philadelphia on 4 November. If you're interested in coming, RSVP by editing Wikipedia:Meetup/Philadelphia 2 to reflect the likelihood of your being able to attend. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. WikiProject Disambiguation Talk Request[edit]

This is a form message being sent to all WikiProject Disambiguation participants. I recently left a proposed banner idea on the WikiProject Disambiguation talk page and I would appreciate any input you could provide. Before it can be approved or denied, I would prefer a lot of feedback from multiple participants in the project. So if you have the time please join in the discussion to help improve the WikiProject. Keep up the good work in link repair and thanks for your time. Nehrams2020 22:39, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

November Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Opera company articles[edit]

Thanks for your note on my page about the Vlaamse Opera. This is one I can certainly try to get to, but don't know when..... There's a lot to do and I'm not sure how much info I can rustle up. So, if someone else does begin, no problem. Vivaverdi 01:48, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You are right, I should not have deleted her alleged "birth name" (Kathrina) without putting it up for discussion, I just seriously doubted/doubt that it really was her birth name - regardless of whatever IMDb or IBDb says.

As far as "Ms." being non-encyclopaedic, I am afraid we must agree to disagree unless you can show me something in writing to back up your assertion.

Yours sincerely,

RMS Umbria[edit]

Regarding your edits to the above-linked article, per Wikipedia article form, only the first word in a headings (and proper nouns) should be capitalized. I'd fix it myself, but I'm unsure of what needs to be capitalized specifically (the proper nouns). Please see Wikipedia:Manual of Style (headings) for justification.-FateSmiled&DestinyLaughed 03:05, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

BRIAN 1979

Your comment is noted but in this case RMS is a title namely ROYAL MAIL SHIP and is representad in the same way as you would HMS for ship of the royal navy or in the case of SS for state ship, or MV for a merchant vessel.

Deletion request on French Wikipedia[edit]

Hello! I saw from your Babel box you're fr-4 so I hope you can make a request on the French Wikipedia for me.

I have nominated the unencyclopedic user page of User:Bestlyriccollection for deletion; however he has copied the same trashy content to the French Wikipedia (user talk page too. Please help me make a request for deletion over at the French WP (maybe here?). Thanks in advance! Kimchi.sg 09:01, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The user is using his user page to store material not related to the Wikipedia project - how things like the "Jours de garbage" section, or the enormous mass of both internal and external links in the "Cellphone Technologies" section help him in Wikipedia-related tasks is beyond me. You could claim that he is using them as references in articles, but he has made very few edits to cellular phone-related articles; the last was to Sanyo mobile phones, more than 7 months ago. Also, the "Free Surfing Forums" section on his user talk page consists mostly of forum links, which we never use as references around here. It looks more like his personal bookmarks list than a series of references for an article. Lastly (and perhaps not so significantly), if it really is a bona fide list of references, why does he have to register an account on the French Wikipedia (and several other wikis) just to store the same content in his user page there? At the very least, it is suspicious. Kimchi.sg 11:34, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'll sleep on it. Kimchi.sg 17:59, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of my controversy addition to Lisa Kudrow article[edit]

I just noticed that you deleted my Lisa Kudrow controversy edit because it was non referenced and POV. I tried to get a reference to her actual words but was unable to. And as for the POV aspect of my edit, I did reference national health care to a wikipedia article. The French health care system is considered to be excellent per various ratings but I did not reference that either---here are some belated refs [[1]] [[2]] [[3]]. So I agree for the reasons of your deletion, but I still feel strongly that her comment was controversial and made no sense. I am an user of the French health system, and I know from experience and knowledge that a patient has access to medical doctors at all times, French doctors do not disappear during the summer. When I searched the Web, I came across Americans stating that they now know that all socialized medicine is useless because Lisa Kudrow said so. So her comment was controversial, misleading, and wrong. I will write a Wikipedia article on the French Health Care system, so next time I need to reference it, I can. --Gondola 11:51, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lisa Kudrow advice[edit]

Perhaps if it's worded diffferently it won't be POV? Honestly I only vaguely remember having done it. How long ago was this? I'm glad you didn;t take it personally. -FateSmiled&DestinyLaughed 11:57, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps the deletion of the last sentence would make it less POV, even through it is true!:

On the Tonight Show, aired on August 1, 2006, she mentioned to Jay Leno that she was unable to receive proper medical attention while vacationing in France and had to resort calling her own doctor in California. The French publicly-funded health care system provides for medical doctor visits at home for a nominal fee and provides for medical personnel to be available every day of the year. In addition there is private medical treatment available. Her comment therefore has caused puzzlement among the users of the French health care system. [citation needed]

Your edit was dated Sept 21 per that article page's history. No need for me to take your edit personally, as you gave good reasons and I could contact you directly.

Even with improving the POV language, Kudrow's words still need to be referenced, and I tried very hard without success to get a transcript or a video of her words. Wikipedia takes possible slandering of celebrities very seriously as they need to.

But the positive aspect of your edit is I am now motivated to write an article on the French national health care system, so I thank you for that!--Gondola 14:08, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Miami Vice[edit]

Hi dude! :) How are you? Miami Vice was good that's all i can say! It did make a success for farrell's career, since it qualified for a boxoffice status! :) Ramirez 06:00 December 3, 2006 (UTC)

Reply: Hi there! :) I like all of Farrell's movies, since I'am a big fan. My favourites are Phone Booth, Recruit, S.W.A.T and The New World, Miami Vice etc.. Alexander was a good film, some people just took the whole homosexuality to seriously, but as Oliver Stone would say "Alexander and Hephastion's relationship was more of a friendly issue; there is nothing wrong with a king who cries and express emotions". All of it's stories though was based on facts and real events. :) Ramirez, 22:30 03 December, 2006 (UTC)

Concordia Newsletter[edit]

NEWSLETTER

Concordia is currently trying to relaunch. I, and all the members of the ex-council, wish to welcome new members to the group. We are a group who aim to promote remaining civil, in an environment where messages can easily be interpretated wrongly.

Help out now![edit]

  • Try and help people remain civil! Talk to them, and help them in any way possible. Do not be afraid to use the talk page.
  • Give people the Civility Barnstar.
  • Make and spread some Wikitokens so people know there are people to help if they want assistance.
  • Add banners or logos to your userpage to show your support.
  • Suggest some ideas! Add 'em to the talk page.

We are a community, so can only work though community contributions and support. It's the helping that counts.

Decision Making[edit]

The council expired one month ago, but due to the current position of the group the current council will remain until the position of the group can be assessed, and whether it would be sensible to keep Concordia going. For most decisions, however, it will be decided by all who choose to partake in discussions. I am trying to relaunch because of the vast amounts of new members we have received, demonstrating that the aims are supported.

If you wish to opt of of further talk-page communications, just let us know here.

When you've used the appropriate code to italicize a television program for example, there is no need to but further quotes around it (as you did in Michael Hogben). See Wikipedia:Manual of Style. Happy editing! -FateSmiled&DestinyLaughed 22:32, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Eulogy category - reply[edit]

hi. since the description of the LGBT-related films category reads, "films that deal with or feature important gay, lesbian or bisexual or transgender characters or issues and may have same-sex romance or relationships as an important plot device", i figured having both that category and the lesbian film category attached to Eulogy (film) was redundant. J. Van Meter 02:42, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Normal (film)[edit]

I am not sure why I did that because, as you may have noticed, it was done three months ago. :) It was probably because at the time, Made-for-TV movies had not been in WP:FILMS's scope. However, now they are, so I have rated that article on its quality. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Cbrown1023 21:26, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hot guys[edit]

Hi Brian. Attention grabbing headline, yeah?

After devoting article after article to species of genus Acer, dead Boston Brahmin, medieval literature, stupidly obscure films like Kjærlighetens kjøtere and other topics well-removed from my immediate personal experience, I recently turned my attention to a few gay topics. I just made articles for Adam4Adam and The French Connection (videos) and completely rewrote Manhunt.net and Party and Play. The French Connection videos article gave me an excuse to post some images of hot guys (really, more than was needed) just like it gave me an excuse for the above headline.

I thought it might be fun to point these out to you. I think the rest of my Wikipedia contacts play for the other team (although one has a goatee and wears a baseball cap, i.e. highly suspect!).

(John) HouseOfScandal 18:29, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Update: the French Connection article is up for deletion on the grounds that its too akin to an advertisement. It would be cool if you read the article and saw my comments on the talk page of the article and chimed in accordigly. Well, if it was outright vandalism I'd suggest Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism or Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard (and you could try those), but it just appears to be useless, non-n info, and the user(s) haven't broken 3rr (yet). Next time it gets added, you could warn them about WP:3RR and then report all of them when they break it (i.e. it should be easy to convince the folks over at 3RR that it's obvious sockpuppetry used to break 3RR). Brian Geraghty[edit]

Thanks for the thanks! I'm just doing my WikiGnome thing with AutoWikiBrowser. It does all the heavy work. I just glance over the changes it proposes and approve them or tell it to skip the article. Quite easy and it runs in the background checking page after page, only beeping when it hits a page with changes. Wow, I sound like a salesman, huh? Just my little contribution to making WP a better reference. This is my mindless copyediting mode as opposed to actual editing and writing in articles. I can do that as well, really. Best. --Pigman (talk • contribs) 06:10, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Brian1979, although Mad Jack suggested that you post this case on Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism, this page is for cases of blatant vandalism where users have already been issued warnings. Yours is a complex case, so I moved it to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents. I will, however, issue warnings to the two users that you mentioned. --Deathphoenix ʕ 17:57, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
