Editing on a Semi-Protected Article

Hello! The article I have chosen to work on is semi-protected, and is saying that even though I have a registered account my edits would still need to be reviewed. I didn't know what to do because I have an account, and any edits I submit do not show up on the course page because they have not been approved. Anything I should do to fix this? Thanks! Designer404 (talk) 00:19, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi there @Designer404, If you take a look at the history page, your edits were reverted for being unsourced and some possible original research. I'd say to draft up your contribution in a sandbox page and address these concerns. Take a look at your sources and see whether they satisfy the criteria for reliable sources. If you need a refresher on how to add citations, please consult this training module. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:23, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Help on Article

Hi! I was wondering how I am able to move my references from the bibliogrpahy into the sanbox? I copy and pasted them into the sandbox, but it got rid of the links. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lilianacrivera (talkcontribs) 06:32, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Lilianacrivera, You gotta make sure you're in edit mode in your sandbox when you copy the references for the reference information to fully transfer over when you paste them into your sandbox. Give it a try. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:31, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello.

One of my group members tried to go into our sandbox draft and work on her section, but a message came up about unambiguous copyright infringement although we hadn't finished our changes nor made the changes live. Now everything seems to be gone and we don't know what to do

Need help request from Anonyme1604 (talk)

Hello.

I need help with my sanbox. For some reason every single time I try to draft something I get a pop up stating that -This is a user sandbox of Anonyme1604. You can use it for testing or practicing edits. This is not the sandbox where you should draft your assigned article for a dashboard.wikiedu.org course. To find the right sandbox for your assignment, visit your Dashboard course page and follow the Sandbox Draft link for your assigned article in the My Articles section.

The link from the training keeps bringing me to the exact same page which is slowly causing frustration on my end. Please send guidance.

Thank you

--Anonyme1604 (talk) 21:40, 30 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi there!
Checked out your dashboard, and you need to assign yourself an article as outlined in this training module. Then you'll see the link under the My Articles section here. Note that you have to be logged into the Dashboard to see this section. Try that out - if you need any further assistance, let me know. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:58, 31 October 2022 (UTC)

Need help request from Anglombardi (talk)

Hello.

I need help with knowing if what I added is correct in citation and what is needed to make the article more cohesive.

--Anglombardi (talk) 17:55, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi, Thanks for reaching out. When it comes to references you want to stick to reliable, independent sources, such as peer reviewed articles, news coverage known for fact checking, published texts, etc. I'd say look for a better source than the Street Directory site. In your sandbox, I can see that you've already referenced different reputable journals, which shows you're already on the right direction.
As for adding content, you would be adding to and improving the existing Classified Advertising article. When you add content to an article, think about how it works with the rest of the text. When you add information, make sure that information isn't already presented somewhere else in the article. If you're replacing text, make sure you don't remove anything important (unless it's not accurate).
I did notice that it doesn't look like you are up to date on the training modules and exercises on the Dashboard, so completing those would help you a lot, especially before you start moving your contribution to the existing article. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:54, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

Need help request from Xavi924 (talk)

Hello.

I need help with moving my article from my personal sandbox to my assigned article sandbox. Is this possible?

Thank you for your time and help!

--Xavi924 (talk) 21:55, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi! Yes, it is possible, and I moved your work to the assigned article sandbox. You can find it here User:Xavi924/Alzheimer's Disease in the Hispanic/Latino Population and you can also reach the page by going to the dashboard in the Assigned Article section and clicking on the Sandbox Draft link. As you review your work, pay attention to the punctuation - references go after punctuation, not before, and there isn't supposed to be a space between them.
Ex. "...underrepresented communities[5]. " is wrong because the period should go before the citation. Try to fix those small edits before moving your article to mainspace. Wish you the best with your contribution! Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 00:30, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

Need help request from Cristinacoca12 (talk)

Hey, I just spent like 2 hrs working on the bibliography and I thought I saved it, but it turns out I didn't. Is there a way I can get that back?

--Cristinacoca12 (talk) 06:53, 28 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi, losing a bibliography that you have worked on for two hours is very frustrating but there is no way that you can retrieve the file. You can retrieve it only if you have the habit of backing every file up, but if you haven't, there is no other possible solution to this than writing the bibliography again. Hello + New Course

Hi -- We haven't met, but this is technically my 3rd time through the Wikipedia Assignment (once as a student, once as a TA, now as an instructor!). I'm looking forward to this upcoming quarter and to teaching the UW Online Communities class with your supportive and watchful eye :). I hope it will be smooth and productive for everyone. I expect you get a flood of questions and I don't want us to be a source of stress for you. I'm adding this page to my watchlist just in case, but please also feel free to notify me in whatever way you prefer if anything with my course seems to be going awry, and I'll do my best to keep everything and everybody on track. Kaylea Champion (talk) 22:57, 9 December 2022 (UTC)

Hi there! Nice to meet you and thank you for the introduction. It's always fun to see what students are up to, so no worries about the questions. That's why we're here :) In any case, looking forward to working with you and your students! In the same collaborative spirit, any questions please feel free to reach out. Need help request from VanessaAVillada (talk)

Hello.

I need help with publishing my wiki article, I dont see a place to make it public

--VanessaAVillada (talk) 20:43, 19 December 2022 (UTC) Laura

Hi! It seems like you did end up moving your work to Cordia Trichotoma Tree. Nice start with the article. One thing I noticed is that you do not have any inline citations in your article, which makes it difficult for readers to verify factual statements in your article. Every statement should be followed by a supporting citation; if a group of sentences are all supported by the same source, you can place a single reference after all of them, but you need to have at least one reference per paragraph, and you shouldn't have any statements after the final reference in a paragraph. If you need a refresher on how to add citations, please consult this training module. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 22:30, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Southwest Minnesota State University/Senior Seminar (Spring 2023)

Hi Brianda. Since you are the advisor for Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Southwest Minnesota State University/Senior Seminar (Spring 2023), perhaps you can take a look at User talk:Acsieling and see if you have anything else to add. Since even lots of experienced users aren't familiar with Wikipedia's non-free content use policy, it's not surprising that new users don't even know it exists. As mistakes go, adding a non-free image to one's user page is really quite common and not something that typically leads to administrator involvement. Re-adding the same file after it has be removed in accordance with relevant policy may, however, be something that leads to administrator stepping if it happens too many times. Probably nobody wants to see a teacher or one of their students getting blocked for WP:NFCC#9 violations, but the bot removing the file won't stop and repeatedly re-adding the file not only will be a violation of WP:NFCC, but it also most likely will be considered WP:EW. My hope is that Acsieling will read what I posted and pass the information along to their class, but perhaps their are Wiki Ed moduli or guidance pages that the class might also find helpful. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:06, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

@Marchjuly Thanks for bringing this to my attention! I appreciate your patience and for utilizing this as a teaching moment for all. I added a link to our training module in my response to Acsieling . If you come across a similar occurrence with other courses and/or students, feel free to ping me. Again thank you! Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:45, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
Nobody seems to have been re-adding non-free content to their user pages; so, perhaps nothing more really needs to be done. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:58, 18 January 2023 (UTC)

How do I add to an existing article

I am so confused on what I am doing wrong.. What I want to do is add to an existing article. I can't afford to fail. I need this class to graduate., Lpsherman1219 (talk) 20:03, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Moved message which was inadvertently tacked on to an old discussion from October into chrono order, and added a section title. Mathglot (talk) 03:26, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
User:Lpsherman1219, you appear to have two drafts going at the same time: 1) User:Lpsherman1219/Cyberbullying, and 2) Draft:Cybullying; did you know that? If this is intentional, it's okay, I'm just thinking it might be hard to manage it all and keep track of what is where. If you would like them merged into one page, Brianda or I can help you with that; if you prefer them separate, that's fine, too.
As far as adding to an article, can we assume that the article you are trying to add to "Cyberbullying"? If not, then which one are we talking about? If you can reply below and explain exactly what it is you are trying to do, Brianda will be in a better position to help you. Mathglot (talk) 03:54, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

Brianda, you may have to check Draft:Cybullying for WP:CLOSEPARAPHRASE; see for example:

  • Cyberbullying is the number one concern for school staff. 25 percent of students who are cyberbullied turn to self-harm to cope. (Panda security; bullets elided), and
  • Cyberbullying is the number one concern for school staff. It is now estimated that 25 percent of the students that are cyberbullied turn to self-harm in order to deal with being bullied. (Draft:Cybullying).

Earwig scores it 45%. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 04:08, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

  • If someone can please stop by Cyberbullying or LpSherman's user page, it would be appreciated. They are on a path that will require administrative intervention as they are ignoring communication about issues with their edits. Slywriter (talk) 21:32, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
@Mathglot @Slywriter: Thanks for catching this. I did connect with @Lpsherman1219 yesterday to provide feedback about their student contribution. In that feedback I addressed reliable sources and plagiarism concerns, but I'll do so again so this incident doesn't repeat itself. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and for taking care of the copyright vio, including communicating with the student on their talk page. In the meantime @Lpsherman1219, when Wikipedia volunteers engage with you, especially when they're providing helpful feedback or warnings, it's best to listen and engage. Until we touch base, please refrain from editing the Cyberbullying article or any other edits to the mainspace. Thanks again to all involved. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 23:11, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

Question about a Question

Hello,

I posted a question on the talk page of Forensic Science and I have not gotten a response back yet. Is there something I did wrong asking the question or is there a different way I could word my question so I could get a response?

Thank you! KalleyO (talk) 18:45, 24 February 2023 (UTC)

Hey there @KalleyO, I checked out your question and you did everything right. Sometimes you might not get a reply and that's ok. At this point, take a look at your contribution and make a decision about where you think it best integrates into the existing article, where it makes the most sense for it. Let me know if you have any questions. Some reminders for your contribution:
  • The goal is to summarize in a neutral, fact based fashion and in your own words the information you've gathered in reliable sources. Facts.
  • Make sure you have inline citations supporting each of the claims you write about, so if someone wants to look into the information you added, they can just click on the citation at the end of your sentence and find the source that supports the text.

Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/UC Santa Barbara/Writ 2 - Academic Writing (Winter 2023)

Hi, I'm the instructor for this course. It's my first time teaching with Wikipedia, just to give you a little background. I have a few students who have chosen the same topics but aren't collaborating on the writing. The first student to be assigned to the topic (like plagiarism) has the bibliography and sandbox in their name. Is there a way for students who are are also working on this topic to create their own bibliography pages etc? Like would they create a subpage? Thanks so much! Franceycapwick (talk) 03:00, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

@Franceycapwick This is one example of the limitations of the dashboard. The dashboard will automatically assign and create the bibliography and the sandbox pages to the first student to be assigned the article. The dashboard will group all the students with the same article as if they were group members working on one article (even though they may not be as is this case)
The students can create separate sandbox pages (one for their sandbox and bibs) under their own user page, but their dashboard sandbox and bibliography links will always remain linked to the first student to be assigned to the topic.
To create a new sandbox page, you can take a look at this wiki help page. Does make sense? Let me know if you have any follow up questions. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:20, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! I will give this a shot and will let you know if I encounter any problems. Franceycapwick (talk) 18:10, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

Class collision

Fast fashion seems like a popular page for class projects: two last summer, two last fall, and two now, as well as others prior to this academic year. You are listed as the wiki-edu wiki-expert for both of them. Given the student-level attention it has received, I think there might not be room for substantive enough additional progress to make it a worthwhile one for more of them. There are also two of your classes on Slow fashion this semester. Especially, having more than one claiming to be working concurrently seems like potential conflict or lack of either pool being able to work to their maximum potential. Wiki-edu projects seem attracted to a bunch of the fashion-trend-related articlesa nd it typically goes poorly, so please take a strong and pro-active approach with them. DMacks (talk) 11:34, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

Wikipedia page keeps getting taken down

Hi Brianda, you keep taking my page down for my use of the interview even though I only cited it 5 times? Plus the citings are only about really specific information that is not currently published on the web, such as the man's birthday, his college education, and his personal goals he is working on for his tribe. If you could please get back to me about how we could rework this article as the vast majority of the information on the article is based on court hearings and websites about the man, not the personal interview I had. Could you maybe read my article just so you can understand how little I use this source? Thanks. Therealethanmayfield (talk) 19:13, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

Thank you.

--RobertJastrzebski (talk) 01:30, 9 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi @RobertJastrzebski, Because you assigned the article to yourself first the sandbox page will appear under your userspace. The other students in your group should assign the article to themselves, so they can edit and have easy access to the sandbox. Take a look at training module for working as a group. Need help with image file from Openverse

Hello. I sent you a message via the "get help" button.  Just want to confirm I am okay to upload those two images from Openverse to WikiCommons.  I believe I included all the filters correctly.  I will wait to hear from  you before I upload.

Also, can we create our own image (in PowerPoint or Word) and upload?  I wasn't sure what the limitations are on "artistic".

What about a photo of scrabble tiles spelling out a word.  Are the tiles copyrighted and therefore not to be used?  Thank you! MizuAzul (talk) 15:56, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Brianda,

I'm concerned about this class. The instructor, Cmartora, created several main space articles that only created content like this:

  • This page will include information on new media pedagogy, an approach to teaching writing within the field of Writing Studies. Students from ENC 3334 at Florida International University will be adding information to this page over the next few weeks.

These pages were tagged for speedy deletion as coursework should not be in the main space of the project. One page had the speedy deletion tag removed so I moved it to Draft space...you can find it at Draft:Multimodal pedagogy. I've left a message for the instructor but I hope you can talk to them as articles in main space should not be works-in-progress for a class to work on, they have to be in good enough shape to useful to our readers. Thank you for any help you can provide. Liz Read! Talk! 03:25, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi - no need to be concerned about my class. I'm sorry that I caused so much confusion. I will delete the new pages I created. Thank you for your help. Cmartora (talk) 10:34, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
Hi Brianda! After following @Liz guidance, I have created draft pages for Expressive pedagogy, Process pedagogy, and New media pedagogy. The pages I originally created (not in the draft space) can be deleted. Is this something that you can help with or something that I should do on my end? Thank you for your help! Cmartora (talk) 16:18, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
Hi @Cmartora, Thanks for following Liz's guidance and creating draftspaces for the articles you plan to work on. If you check out our training on drafting, we instruct students and instructors to draft in their sandbox, so that the instructor and other peers can review the work before moving it to mainspace. The pages that were created have already been deleted.
Thanks @Liz for catching this and letting me know. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:27, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
Okay, thanks! I knew about drafting in sandboxes, but I thought that if I created new articles and each student claimed their article, they would get access to a sandbox for that specific article. I understand now how draft pages work and will use those. Appreciate your help! (talk) 00:02, 14 March 2023 (UTC)

UCI course on Native American history

Hi. I've been meaning to drop you a note for the last few days or so about this. Usually, if I review 10 articles from a course that have been moved into mainspace, I'm lucky to find 3-4 that are okay to remain there as-is. I think one other time there were 5. But out of this batch of articles, I personally reviewed about a dozen or so, and only had issues with 2-3 (including the one you know about). That's a great job, and I just wanted to point that out. Onel5969 TT me 20:32, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

No worries. Another thought I had was what if student editors didn't just publish in mainspace? Not suggesting that they go through AfC, as that can take months, but what if ed coordinators worked with NPP folks and had the drafts reviewed while they were still in draft? Maybe ask for NPP volunteers to work with ed coordinators? Onel5969 TT me 00:28, 14 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Elhefe3192, Where do you have the content you are working on? I recommend you use your sandbox and bibliography pages to work on your contribution for the article you have chosen. You can access your bibliography page here and the sandbox here. This is especially helpful so your peers can review your work to make sure it is ready to added to the existing article. Make sure to use the bibliography and the sandbox box page first, and then you can look over this training module about adding work to the existing article. Let me know if you have any questions. Request for Help: Moving Sandbox to Main Space

Hi!

I am ready to move my article "Drew Arriola-Sands" from the Sandbox to the Main Space but the "Move" or "More" button is nowhere to be found when I am on Edit mode. I'm not sure what to do! I have to turn in the submitted Wikipedia page by this Friday (3/24).

Thank you! ZnailDust (talk) 20:19, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi @ZnailDust Apologies for the late reply. I can see the article is already on mainspace. As you can see it's been tagged with a notability banner. If you are able to find any more reliable sources (like the SCPR, OC weekly page) to support notability of the person, it would increase the article's chance of staying live. Any questions let me know. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:19, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

McEwen_School_of_Architecture-Laurentian_University/Writings_in_Architecture_(Winter_2023)

Greetings. Something you might want to talk to this instructor about. They have two students both of whom worked on the same article, and both moved it into mainspace. Neither currently demonstrates notability, and I've moved them both into draft space: Draft:French River Visitor Centre and Draft:French River Visitor Center 2. There's also an existing draft of the same subject, Draft:French River Visitor Center, by a third student (also doesn't pass WP:GNG). Shouldn't instructors be checking to make sure students are not wasting their time working on the same subject? Onel5969 TT me 10:37, 24 March 2023 (UTC)

@Onel5969 Thank you for catching those. I am going to move the pages to their sandboxes and ask the students to not move them to mainspace. Meanwhile I'll address this with the instructor and see how to go from here, so we get one cohesive article that is fit for mainspace. Definitely some kind of miscommunication to be addressed here. Thanks. It was weird. I reviewed one of the articles yesterday, and then in my NPP patrol today, I came across what I thought was the same article. That's the only way I caught it. But thanks for taking care of it. Onel5969 TT me 18:45, 24 March 2023 (UTC)

TERF assigned by Washington U

Hello. Just wanted to give you a heads-up that the article TERF is assigned by Washington University as part of their Gender and Politics course to a Wiki Ed student in that course. The whole, "Gender and politics" topic area is a contentious one, and the Terf article is one of the most contentious of an already contentious topic area. It takes all the skills of an editor experienced with contentious, gender-related topics to edit that article effectively while avoiding getting into hot water. Imho, this article is a minefield for most editors, and almost the last possible article I'd assign a new editor to edit. Although it has settled down a fair bit from the level of strife it once had, I still pity the editor assigned to it. If this assignment is allowed to go forward, the student's sandbox entries should be carefully vetted before allowing anything into the article, and you should probably watchlist every sandbox or other page they touch, stating with this one.

As a separate issue, there are five red links in the table, indicating that the instructor has assigned new article development to five of her students. That is a pretty tall order for a new editor, and seems an order of magnitude more difficult than the typical student editor assignment. I don't know if Wiki Ed has a policy regarding assigning new articles to students, but those assignments may bear watching as well. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 10:13, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

Hey there @Mathglot, The TERF article did come to my attention about a week ago and I left the student a message on their talk page, asking them to select another article. I will follow up with the student and the instructor again.
As for the new article creation, we do not have a policy limiting the creation of articles. But I appreciate the call to attention to keep an eye those. I checked out one and already see some issues with puffery language and need of in line citations. I'll follow up with the students to orient them onto the productive path. I appreciate you reaching out to me to let me know of these concerns. Always feel free to ping me. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:32, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

Need help moving my sandbox draft

HI there,

I have been unable to move my sandbox draft into the published main space, can you please help me move it? here is the link

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Pebble311/Gary_Floyd?veaction=edit&preload=Template:Dashboard.wikiedu.org_draft_template Pebble311 (talk) 01:14, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Pebble311, Wikipedia policy is that references go after punctuation, not before, and there isn't supposed to be a space between them. Please go back and make those edits before moving to mainspace.
To move the work to mainspace, take a look at the training module on creating a new article. It has screenshots and step by step instructions to follow. Let me know if you have any questions. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:42, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

Review, Suggestions, and move to Wikipedia

Hi Brianda,

Would you mind taking a look at my sandbox entry for an addition to the Commercial Use of Space (User:Trt73520/Commercial use of space)? I would be very interested in your thoughts and any suggestions. If it is satisfactory, I would like to try to move it to the live page with your help.

Regards,

@Trt73520 Check out your talk page for my comments and questions. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:49, 6 April 2023 (UTC)

Student use of Chat GPT

Wanted to call your attention to a student adding Chat GPT-generated content to their sandbox. Student IDRL (talk · contribs) [no ping] is a student in Cal State LB's Design Research Lab course, taught by H. Barker (Professor of Design (talk · contribs) [no ping], and has article Phenomenology (architecture) assigned to them. They have not, as yet, made any edits to that article (or any mainspace page) but have two edits to Talk:Phenomenology (architecture). On 2 March, student IDRL added 5kb of AI-generated content from Chat GPT to their sandbox, following which their sandbox then looked like this. LLMs are still new, and Wikipedia is still reacting to them in various forums, such as most recently in this ongoing discussion at ANI. Now, this student hasn't made any edits of any kind since 2 March, but otoh, their class doesn't end till May. For the moment, I've rolled back their sandbox (which apparently wasn't the right place for them to be working anyway) to the stub created by the professor before the student began adding AI content. (I intentionally added a rather vague edit summary, which will probably require interpretation if they ask about it.)

At the moment, Wikipedia has no policy or guideline about AI/LLMs that you could quote (therefore I presume there is nothing in Wiki Ed training modules about it either), so you probably can't really caution or advise the professor too much about this until WP comes up with something concrete. However, my action (the rollback) and this discussion are matters of fact, as are the ongoing discussions about LLMs generally, so I suppose you could say that a WP editor blanked the student sandbox and talked to you about it, and that WP is looking at the whole situation without really opining on it policy-wise. Probably would be a good idea to check with User:Ian (Wiki Ed) who's been around longer and may have thoughts about it. Exceptionally in this case, I'm going to also ping User:Helaine (Wiki Ed), as this situation, imho, is actually just the tip of an iceberg that is going to grow enormously, and is an early warning indicator of an issue that probably should be addressed institutionally by Wiki Ed at some point, even if only internally as to what your position is about it. Mathglot (talk) 23:29, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

A completely separate issue, really, but Gertrude16 (talk · contribs) [no ping] at Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/John Abbott College/Mind-Body (Winter 2023) has a user subpage sandbox (here) with unsourced content (about ChatGPT) that reads like an essay, or personal reflection on the topic, and that is completely unsourced. Mathglot (talk) 11:13, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the ping, Mathglot. Honestly, I'm not really sure what will happen with ChatGPT and Wikipedia; as Sage mentioned in this blog post we really don't want students using ChatGPT. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:17, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
Ian, I'm not sure, either, but I'm following the situation. Thanks for the link to the blog post; good article. Mathglot (talk) 17:59, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
@Mathglot Thanks for catching Gertrude16's sandbox. I've looped in the instructor and left a message for the group on their talk page about improving the contribution to be fit for mainspace. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 00:41, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

Need help request from JayhawkTerp (talk)

Hello.

I need help with finding the right sandbox to write my article. I've tried (more than once) to follow the link from the class dashboard but it keeps taking me to my regular sandbox, with a pop-up telling me not to use that one.

Also, what's the difference between a Bibliography section and a References list - does it matter which one I use?

--JayhawkTerp (talk) 00:12, 9 April 2023 (UTC)

Adding Categories

Hi hi @Brianda (Wiki Ed) - my wonderful students have created some amazing pages through Wiki Edu. One such page - Jewish sexual violence during the Holocaust - doesn't have any categories and when the students try to link it to Holocaust related pages, they are not able to. Could you provide @Sarahjones115 and @CyanCaribou any guidance? Thanks so much!!! Mononoke99 (talk) 12:40, 9 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Mononoke99 @Sarahjones115 and @CyanCaribou. Adding categories can be tricky, but I recommend looking at articles similar in topic, to find categories that may work for the article. You can also check out this page that has organized the categories according to topics. I can see that some categories have already been added, but feel free to search through the link to see if there are more relevant ones. Any other questions feel free to reach out. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 01:06, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks @Brianda (Wiki Ed)!!! Figured it out!!! All best. Mononoke99 (talk) 12:21, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

Need help request from JayhawkTerp (talk)

Hello.

How do I delete the Bibliography template once I've got my bibliography and references good to go? How do other users view my bibliography?

The References on my new page (Hair and wig designer) have the citation numbers listed at the top. How do I get rid of that?

--JayhawkTerp (talk) 17:01, 9 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi @JayhawkTerp, I see you've moved your sandbox to the mainspace, and removed the bibliography template and fixed the citations. References will usually be the section where the citations live. You can add an additional bibliography of the sources if you wish, but it is not necessary.
You can share your bibliography page link with whoever needs to see it. Is this for a peer review? Students can access each other's sandbox and bibliography pages on the Student tab of the dashboard, by click on specific students usernames, and then clicking on the link below the username.
Do you have any other questions? Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 00:59, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
Some of those fixes were made by others after I published my article. (I have no idea how my References list got reversed when I did my first inline citation or how someone managed to remove the row of little superscript numbers for me.)
In general, the instructions on citations would benefit from being a lot more detailed and specific. Those who need the detail with thank you and those who don't can gloss over the bits they already know. JayhawkTerp (talk) 02:28, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

Need help request from Isaak904 (talk)

Hello.

I need help with... creating a sandbox for my article.

--Isaak904 (talk) 13:48, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Isaak904, Go to the home tab on the Wiki Education Dashboard. Scroll down a little bit and you should see a box titled "My articles" and underneath that the title, "Articles I'm updating." Under "articles I'm updating" you should see the two articles you've assigned yourself to work on. Under the Wikipedia article name, you have the option to click on 'bibliography' that will take you to the bibliography sandbox page to gather your sources, followed by a 'sandbox draft' that will take you to the sandbox page to work on your draft for that article you've assigned yourself.
Also recommend that you complete all the exercises on the dashboard to learn how to edit and navigate Wikipedia as an editor. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:33, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Need help request from Elhefe3192 (talk)

Hello.

I need help with... moving the first paragraph of Moon Rabbit into the right sandbox to edit then to the place where my teacher will grade it. That is what i need in my sandbox.

The Moon rabbit or Moon hare is a mythical figure in East Asian and indigenous American folklore, based on pareidolic interpretations that identify the dark markings on the near side of the Moon as a rabbit or hare. In East Asia, the rabbit is seen as pounding with a mortar and pestle, but the contents of the mortar differ among Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese folklore. In Chinese folklore, the rabbit is often portrayed as a companion of the Moon goddess Chang'e, constantly pounding the elixir of life[1] for her and some show the making of cakes or rice cakes; but in Japanese and Korean versions, the rabbit is pounding the ingredients for mochi or some other type of rice cakes; in the Vietnamese version, the Moon rabbit often appears with Hằng Nga and Chú Cuội, and like the Chinese version, the Vietnamese Moon rabbit also pounding the elixir of immortality in the mortar. In some Chinese versions, the rabbit pounds medicine for the mortals and some include making of mooncakes. Moon folklore from certain Amerindian cultures of North America also has rabbit themes and characters.

--Elhefe3192 (talk) 19:59, 21 April 2023 (UTC)Brandon

Hi @Elhefe3192, I checked out your sandbox and it seems like you figured out how to copy and paste information into the sandbox page. Do you still have any questions?
I noticed you do not have any inline citations, which makes it difficult for readers to verify factual statements in your article. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:59, 24 April 2023 (UTC)

Dic Ann's Hamburgers moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Dic Ann's Hamburgers, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three, to be safe. And please remember that interviews, as primary sources, do not count towards GNG.(?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.Onel5969 TT me 10:43, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Onel5969, Thanks for heads up on this. @Theo4CA is the editor that created the page and moved it to main page. Theo4CA - please check out the message above regarding the article on Dic Ann's Hamburgers.
Reliable sources: Identifying good sources can be difficult. You may recall that the Evaluating articles training module discusses examples of what is a good source and what isn't. I recommend that you review those training slides as a refresher on this. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:28, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Brianda for forwarding the message. And Theo4CA, remember that on WP, do not be afraid to ask questions of other editors. If you do, please remember to "ping" them, as Brianda did me above. Onel5969 TT me 20:15, 24 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi. You might want to have the instructor take a look at stuff before submitting. This was submitted with zero citations. In addition, it's about a subject that already exists, Asgard. As always, thanks for your help. Onel5969 TT me 11:47, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

Actually, I will add this to Rockethound's talkpage, who I missed was the actual instructor.Onel5969 TT me 11:49, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
@Onel5969 Thanks for bringing this up and catching that duplicate. We emailed the instructor this week recommending student work stay in the sandbox until it can be reviewed. I think this is a good example that further supports that recommendation. Will be in talks with them again. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:44, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

Unconstructive edits from ChristopherH13

Hi there. I've already left a note on their talk page, but I wanted to bring to your attention that one of your(?) students (forgive me, I'm not familiar w/ how the Wiki Ed structure works), ChristopherH13, has been making rather unconstructive edits to articles, e.g. King Von and Suicideboys. I have reverted almost all of their edits due to either a lack of source, poor or inappropriate source, or for being wholly original research/synthesis/lacking NPOV. With the King Von article especially, I find it troubling that ChristopherH13 has attempted to re-introduce inappropriate edits that were previously reverted, and were introduced by other accounts/IPs. The King Von article was already semi-protected for exactly this reason. (I don't know if there's a Wiki Ed policy re: editing articles with edit protections in place due to active/frequent disruptions.) I'll keep an eye on this, but I was hoping you could help in the matter. --Hadal (talk) 20:14, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

Again I apologize and did not realize this was a protected article. Additionally please let me know what specifically you would want a source to. ChristopherH13 (talk) 20:22, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
Hi @ChristopherH13, Thanks for joining the conversation. Keep in mind any edits or text that you make/add to an article has to be supported by a reliable source. It can't just be a popular website or a blog, even the documentary you used has to be closely reviewed to see if they are a trusted source.
Adding text with no inline citations, makes it difficult for readers to verify factual statements in your article. Every statement should be followed by a supporting citation. If you need a refresher on how to add citations, please consult this training module.
When it comes to reliable sources, we are primarily looking for news coverage from reliable, independent sources think like the Houston Chronicle, New York Times or academic journals that are peer reviewed and have a reputation for fact checking.
The other thing is the writing has to be neutral. The text shouldn't persuade the reader, it should be informative and relay facts in a neutral style.
If you wish to continue editing, I suggest for you to work on your edits in a sandbox page before editing the live article, and paying close attention to the feedback i left above. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:33, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

Need Help With Copyright Infringement!

Hello! I am currently working on improving the wiki site for non-cognitivism and have been flagged for copyright infringement for a section that is already publicly posted on Wiki. I have no touched any part of that section but it is in fact a direct copy from the following link: https://gfgc.kar.nic.in/hiriyadka/GenericDocHandler/210-2139ef5f-bbca-488a-a5c6-770f2eb41dae.pdf. The section being flagged is:

Non-cognitivism is the meta-ethical view that ethical sentences do not express propositions (i.e., statements) and thus cannot be true or false (they are not truth-apt). A non-cognitivist denies the cognitivist claim that "moral judgments are capable of being objectively true, because they describe some feature of the world". If moral statements cannot be true, and if one cannot know something that is not true, non-cognitivism implies that moral knowledge is impossible.

Non-cognitivism entails that non-cognitive attitudes underlie moral discourse and this discourse therefore consists of non-declarative speech acts, although accepting that its surface features may consistently and efficiently work as if moral discourse were cognitive. The point of interpreting moral claims as non-declarative speech acts is to explain what moral claims mean if they are neither true nor false (as philosophies such as logical positivism entail). Utterances like "Boo to killing!" and "Don't kill" are not candidates for truth or falsity, but have non-cognitive meaning.

I am worried that I will be banned from posted for a section I did not add and is already publicly posted. Any way I could get assistance on this matter? Thank you! Mnusom (talk) 14:30, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Mnusom, No worries. I posted a reply to the user that left the message on your talk page, and hopefully we'll clearly this up.
But I do want to talk about your sandbox contribution.
As a reminder, when the time comes to add text to the existing article: Never copy and paste the draft over the entire existing article. Instead, edit small sections at a time, replacing only content that you've changed.
Remember, the goal is to improve the existing article, not to completely rewrite it. As editors, we want to be respectful of the content that is already there and the edits that have been made, and discuss any possible, big changes to the existing articles on the talk page.
I can see the original article is missing a lot of inline citations to verify the written text, and it is also written in a very essay like tone. My suggestion to you is to go over the content that you've written so far and make sure that a reliable source can support or back up each sentence that you have in your draft. So that if any reader wants to check if a sentence has accurate information, they can click on the inline citation and find that information in the cited source. This will help you see what text can remain and what text is fluff or original research, and can then be removed.
Remember the goal is to summarize what reliable sources have said about Non-cognitivism, so that a Wikipedia reader can get an overview of the current thoughts and understanding of that topic.
Please let me know if you have any questions about what I wrote above. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:04, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

Help with going live

Hello,

I brought our sandbox edits live, we did a total rewrite of one of the subsections. I hope that's okay. Also, How do we put images in our sandbox from the original article? It doesn't seem to work with copy and paste. Avmcloney (talk) 17:01, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Avmcloney, @Nchutchi, @Aiolamichael, @Caffufufu: When you moved your changes to the main article History of immigration to the United States, there were a few problems. I've undone your changes for the time being.
When you replace text, make sure not to remove anything important (unless it's inaccurate). The edit you made copied over existing text that you didn't edit, and the original sources were removed in the process. We want to be respectful of the existing content that is there, especially when it's good information that is well sourced.
One of the key reminders in the training module on moving work out of sandbox is "Never copy and paste your draft over the entire article. Instead, edit small sections at a time, replacing only content that you've changed." Please review this training module before adding content back into the article, and be sure to do it in several small chunks with detailed summaries about what you did for other editors to understand your changes.
Remember every statement should be followed by a supporting citation; if a group of sentences are all supported by the same source, you can place a single reference after all of them, but you need to have at least one reference per paragraph, and you shouldn't have any statements after the final reference in a paragraph. If you need a refresher on how to add citations, please consult this training module.
For more information on images check out the training module on contributing images. Please let me know if you have any questions. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:36, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
Hi Brianda,
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I have copied and pasted in small parts to the live article with our edits and additions. It appears our references transferred over and were automatically fed to the reference list. Will you please let me know if how our edits were added is correct? Thank you Nchutchi (talk) 01:24, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

Citing a source in an episode table

Hi Brianda,

I'm trying to cite a source for an edit that I plan to make on the episode table for the Smallville (Season 4) article but I don't know how. I was able to do so in my sandbox but on the actual article it seems to be in source mode. Is there a way to do this? Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon! JustinC7 (talk) 18:01, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi Brianda,
I attempted to do it but the source was cited wrong. I used < ref > and < / ref > (I spaced it out here because it directly tried to get me to cite a source), but the source had no blue links in the references section unlike the rest of them. Why is this so? Please look at the Smallville (Season 4) version history for reference. Thank you! JustinC7 (talk) 19:38, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
Hi @JustinC7, No worries. Adding references in source mode is really tricky, especially for a beginner.
First you want to go into edit mode for the article. If it is in source mode, you wanna switch to visual editor. You do this by clicking on the pencil icon next to the "Publish" button and you'll have two options visual and source. Click on Visual editor and then you can add a citation by clicking on the "cite" button. Check out the module on adding a citation for screenshots of this process. Let me know if you have any other questions. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:43, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi Brianda, I noticed your annotations, comments, etc., at the student's draft, and everything you say is spot on. You hit the key problems with the student's draft, but I wanted to add that there are a few unduly promotional phrasings in the draft:

  • "He was fascinated by the flexible and formal aspects of governed structures and concrete."
  • "to create a harmonious and one-of-a-kind shape and space"
  • "Zohn's approach to architecture and background in artistic values are well known, lending depth to the design of his work."
  • "a dramatic roof was constructed"
  • "... and steel to pursue aesthetic value. It was a very innovative design in the context of architecture at the time."
  • "There are various facilities here, such as a school, a gym, and a clinic. There are also three floors and parking spaces."

I'm hoping that your work on this means that you will be the one approving the integration of the draft into the article. If the student is to be believed, their professor is not sufficiently experienced in Wikipedia to do it.

One more comment: There are too many subsections under Work, especially when one considers how brief some are. I suggest combining them as much as possible. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:10, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

@Seongyeon Song Check out the additional helpful feedback that @Bbb23 left above. They mentioned unduly promotional phrasing - keep in mind that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia - it's supposed to present information in a neutral fashion. There's no need to generate excitement about your topic. Say what it is, don't try to convince people of how good (or bad) it is.
A good rule of thumb is to present information that guides readers to their own decisions, without trying to convince them.
@Bbb23 For the Work section, do you think a simple list of the works would be best like the one in the Spanish version of this article? Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 23:38, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
@Brianda (Wiki Ed): I think the one in the Spanish version is awful. It's too long and it's unsourced. Maybe in the English version we could have bullet items instead of subsections but have some (encyclopedic) prose next to it if there is something noteworthy about that work, along with a source of course. What do you think? Oh, I received your e-mail; I'll try to reply tomorrow. I'm too tired right now. :-) --Bbb23 (talk) 23:50, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
@Bbb23 Kinda like the Major works section for the Dan Dworsky article? I think @Seongyeon Song can make that happen. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:34, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
Yes, that's much better, Brianda.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:54, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

Fitchburg State University student

Hi Brianda. Perhaps either you or Helaine (Wiki Ed) can figure out a way to contact Marcplummer82 (maybe via their course instructor) and ask them what they were trying to do with this edit, this edit and this edit to International Peace Mission movement. They were obviously try to add citations to the article, but most likely didn't no how to properly do so. Since they haven't edited since early April, I'm guessing that their course Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Fitchburg State University/Media, Activism, and_Social Movements (Spring 2023) has finished and thus they most likely won't be back. I've temporarily hidden the citations since the way they were added was messing up the formatting of the page, but I've got no idea where they were intended to be added. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:50, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Marchjuly, Thanks for this kind message. I emailed @Marcplummer82 looping them into the conversation, and inviting them to edit. Not sure if they'll reply or engage tbh. I think we can give it a day or two, and if not then delete the citations so they don't interfere with the formatting? Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:53, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
I've WP:HIDDEN the references at the end of the last section before the "References" section and they're only currently visible is the article's source code. If the student user comes back and has trouble finding them, just give me a ping. I didn't assess whether they're references to reliable sources. If they are and can be used in proper context, there's no reason for them to be deleted. I'm assuming the student user added them because they thought they supported some article content and not simply as WP:GENREFs; so, all they need to do move them near the content they're intended to support. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:15, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Sounds good. I haven't received word from them yet, but I will let you know. Thank you! Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:05, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

Rutgers University Newark

Hi Brianda, I've noticed a cluster of edits from students in Wikipedia:Wiki_Ed/Rutgers_University_Newark/Foundations_of_Literary_Study_(Spring_2023) and Wikipedia:Wiki_Ed/Rutgers_University_Newark/Latinx_Literature_and_Culture_(Spring_2023) that have poor formatting for their referencing. To be clear, not all of the students are making these edits, but some have left a bit of a mess (though I am glad that they appear to have sources). I'm hoping that by catching it now, rather than after the class is over, we can make amends. Thanks. Wracking 💬 04:05, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

I haven't seen many students receive blocks despite the many problems that arise, especially at the end of the school term. But it seems like many students either don't know about their User talk pages or they don't see the messages there that are warnings to them to stop whatever has gotten the attention of our editors and admins.

I don't know where students have gotten the messages to move their User sandboxes straight into the main space of the project without making any changes to them but I wish instructors would discourage this behavior. They just aren't main space ready and they usually still have the sandbox tags on the page or they don't have a correct page title or they are moved to User space or Wikipedia/project space when, at the most, they should simply be moved to Draft space. I'm sure their grade isn't reliant on having their student essays in the main space of the project so just because they have gotten some positive peer reviews, it doesn't mean that they should be moved. Most are moved back but some are straight-out deleted and when they pile up day after day, it can get a little exasperating.

But thank you for your infinite patience as a stalwart liaison between us regular editors and the students. I'm sure you have put out more fires than you can count. Liz Read! Talk! 21:24, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

Just going to add something about the "peer reviews" that Liz is referring to above. In most of the cases I've come across, these aren't WP:PEER reviews but rather reviews posted on the student's user talk page or draft talk page by their fellow classmates or university course instructor. Personally, I think it's great that the class participants try to support each other in such a way, but (again in most of the cases I've come across) these reviews seem to have very little Wikipedia value and sometimes even encourage or suggest things that are contrary to policies and guidelines. Perhaps there's a way (if there already isn't) to have student's work reviewed by more experienced editors; for example, students might be really good candidate for something like WP:GTF. Maybe Wiki-ED and the GT can figure out a way to assign formally all student editors a volunteer mentor. I understand that's kind of what course advisors like yourself do, but more eyes watching a student might help them avoid problems like the above. Course instructors could be looped to things as well so that they will know if a particular student user talk page starts filling up with all kinds of user warnings or other notifications. Students are also likely going to be more willing to take direction from their instructors than they are going to be from random Wikipedians since the instructor controls actual grades. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:57, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
@Liz That incident was strange and the student behavior inappropriate for any space, academic or Wikipedia. I've communicated with the instructor and the student to discuss what transpired. My sincere apologies that you got caught up in that.
As for the draft student work that gets moved to mainspace, we cover these concerns in the training modules, but I am not sure where it gets lost. We also communicate to the instructors that work does not have to be on mainspace for it to be graded.
@Marchjuly You are not the first to mention a collaboration like that.
@Liz @Marchjuly I know it's been a busy (perhaps tiresome) couple of weeks with student work, but I really appreciate your watchful eyes and the time you take to communicate with me. Please know that I actually take your comments and feedback back to the Wiki Ed team to discuss how we might improve our training modules and processes. CUNY Hunter College Student - has a question

I've been assigned to update the page of an artist; I've found several videos that are great and would give readers of this artist's page, wonderful insight into the artist's art practice and creative methodology. is it possible to have video as a category? Bklynsag668 (talk) 13:47, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

@Bklynsag668 It depends. Are you using the videos as material for people to watch on the article or as sources to support the text you've written, or as additional material readers can check out if they interested to know more? Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:30, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

Article Deleted

Hi! My classmate deleted our article we were working on in our sandbox. It was on Carnival. Can this be restored? Queen0527 (talk) 14:41, 17 May 2023 (UTC)

@Queen0527 Please see my reply on Vrwebre's talk page. Brianda (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:12, 18 May 2023 (UTC)

Course: Korean Visual Culture between Tradition and Contemporaneity

Pinging Helaine (Wiki Ed), since they are also involved overseeing the course. Wanted to send a compliment to the instructor of this course. Rarely do reviewers see the quality of articles coming out of a Wiki course. While there are a few of the articles which have issues which may prevent them from remaining in the project, most were very well-done, albeit with minor formatting issues. Props to Poppyprint. In addition to the quality of work overall, for the first time I can remember, a student's article was improved after being tagged as needing something (be that more refs, or a notability issue). Reviewers sometimes groan when they see a swath of new articles as classes end, but it was a pleasure reviewing these 9 articles. Bravo. Onel5969 TT me 11:56, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for so much for your comments! This was my first time incorporating a Wikipedia project in my class, and despite the learning curve, overall the experience has been very positive. I also want to thank Brianda for their tireless support and dedication, especially the past couple of weeks as students were frequently requesting feedback and help with moving their articles to Wikipedia.
