Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Gss.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 03:15, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:GSSCrest.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:GSSCrest.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 19:41, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Alaska Senators

They're on my list but not for awhile, so feel free to do them yourself. I'm not an Alaskan. I'm working on the state officeholders (especially governors, state senators and reps) for all 50 states, and that's (obviously!) a huge job. I've already gone through all the governors. Now I have to prioritize. I intended to ensure there were at least stub articles for each (and basic information for those who already had something), but many states had just about nothing in place. So now I'm focusing on only some of them, depending on the state. In some states that has meant the 'leadership' people, in others a few 'examples' hoping local Wikipedians would use them as templates and create articles for the rest, in others parties (easier to cut and paste!), in others it means the group that seems to be in charge, in others who's up for election soon. Yesterday I was working on Mississippi, which hasn't been updated since their last election so the list didn't even include the current officeholders. Every state seems to be going its own way with no Wikigroup working to provide much standardization among states. Perhaps that will come later.Flatterworld (talk) 14:30, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

UMCP's motto and status

With due respect, I not only attended UMCP with double majors, both in the end of the '70s-'80s, and 2002-4, but was a founder of the Food Co-op in Stamp Union, worked for the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences in '85-'86, and then settled finally as an Undergraduate Admissions Representative in the Mitchell Building. One duty I performed was personally answering every email coming to the office of any kind, and this motto was asked several times before. Please see the page on Professor John Pease, who unsuccessfully attempted to have the school adopt the motto of "I'd Rather Be Studying" quite recently. He is involved in the Campus Senate. I spoke with him just yesterday, and was told that, no, no UMCP motto exists. IF there is a link that specifically states that the motto you replaced on that page applies to UMCP in particular, please send me that link, because it's erroneous. I mean, my boss' boss is Vice President Linda Clement- who is portrayed in the hazing section. In addition, I've never, in 30 years heard anyone who says they attend "USM", and think that adding that the place is referred to as simply "Maryland" is unnecessary. Prove me wrong, but in the motto case I know there is none for that campus. --leahtwosaints (talk) 15:07, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

I placed the link on your talk page. It is from an official source, the University of Maryland Archives. http://www.lib.umd.edu/univarchives/macmil/letm.html . I have a phone call into the University Archivist for more information. I'm not really sure what your note is about in regard to status. If this is part of what I reverted, I apologize, I only meant to revert the motto. I'm also quite familiar with the University of Maryland, I live less than 10 miles away and have attended numerous events on campus. While this is less experience than a student, I'm still fairly familiar.Naraht (talk) 15:43, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Sorry if I seemed rude. My own father is still a Professor on campus. I showed him the link- he is one of the people who involved in trying to get the "I'd rather be studying" motto adopted, so he's going to clear up the misunderstanding. I won't mess with that part of the page until I hear something definite. Luckily he was the clout to go right to the heart of the matter. I live across the street from UMCP. ;) The student experience wasn't what counted, actually; it was answering 300-400 emails a day for years in the Undergrad. Admissions Office for Dr. Clement/ Barbara Gill that gave me more trivia knowledge than anything else! And, yes, I was also speaking of the other editing I'd done that was reverted by accident by you, so I hope no bad feelings with all this? --leahtwosaints (talk) 23:01, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

No bad feelings... I talked to the University archivist today and she said that while not used very often, it is the motto of the University... I've got the name of the Archivist at work, I'll add to this thread tomorrow when I go in. I should have only deleted that one part... Naraht (talk) 01:31, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
Her name is Anne Turkos, and she can be contacted through the University library. (I don't put email addresses in cleartext(first initial followed by lastname @umd. edu)or phone numbers in Wikipedia talks, personal policy)Naraht (talk) 13:39, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Re: Thanx on the APO reverts

Sure. No problem. Reverting vandalism is an exception and doesn't incur WP:3RR :) Cheers! Mspraveen (talk) 12:40, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Alpha Phi Omega and Michelle Obama

I guess we should live be common notability standards. For a high-profile woman like her at this time, if we can not find a notable WP:RS, it is not a notable fact nor worthy encyclopedic content, IMO.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 13:36, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Can you help me with Image:James E. West (Scouting).jpg? Is that an image of the same James E. West (Scouting)? If so, I'm not sure the image can stay, as it's not unique enough and the article has a few public domain images there already. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 06:12, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

The image was added by me back in early 2006 and the reference to the image was edited in mid 2006 to not show up. Later a different image was added by someone else which appears to be better and that one was totally deleted. This image shows up nowhere now and can probably be deleted.Naraht (talk) 13:42, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Working on the Notables

halu Brother Naraht

good day to you. Just so happen that i got an email about Michelle Obama (she is addressed as bro. in that mail. We are not used to it here in the Philippines, anyway.) which led me to search in the Wikipedia and led me to scan over your own web. I am so amused to find myself very far from where i started --just checking from my emails.

Anyway, i am a proud member of Alpha Phi Omega, Philippines. My chapter is Delta Kappa and i joined the frat since second semester of 1986. Unti now i am still active in the fraternity in community services and local/regional positions here in Cebu, Philippines. I am a medical doctor but currently is involved into multilevel marketing and i am teaching at the same time. How i wish to send to you recent list of distinguished Alpha Phi Omega (APO)members here in the Philippines, per APO National Council's issued reports. How i wish it to be posted through Wikipedia, if possible. But i do not know how to start or participate by sending it through email. Please advise yours truly. You can contact me at my email address: embacus@yahoo.com. my mobile phone is +639198142830. Thanks alot

APO Brother,

AfD nomination of List of fraternities and sororities in the Philippines

I have nominated List of fraternities and sororities in the Philippines, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of fraternities and sororities in the Philippines. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. Guy (Help!) 00:32, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

November 2008

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on List of fraternities and sororities in the Philippines. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Please do not repeatedly revert edits, but use the talk page to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. If necessary, pursue dispute resolution. Elonka 20:15, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

WP:LUPIN Error

No, lupin caught the line as possible vandalism. Still, it's not the best way to do things.--Ipatrol (talk) 20:36, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Suggestions/ questions/ comments on List of fraternities and sororities in the Philippines

  • 1) Are there any articles and reliable sources on the fraternities or the history of fraternities in the Philippines? Several Wikipedia articles have been deleted because they were totally unsourced and unreferenced. (They can be restored to your userspace if you want to look into resoring them)
  • 2) I think it's an interesting and useful table.
  • 3) The "references" are really external links, and should probably be retitled. I haven't looked at all of them, but one seemed to link to Friendster? I think some sources for the article to establish the subject of fraternities as notable would be good. Articles, books, something must have been written about these organizations and their histories.
  • 4)I think a sentence or two introducing the list would be helpful. Does the list include all fraternities and sororities in the Philippines or only sizable and well established ones? When was the first fraternity? Are they the same or different than fraternities and sororities in the west? (this content should be sourced too...) If you don't want to cover these issues extensively, wikilinking to an article Fraternities and Sororities in the Philippines? or an existing article that covers these subjects would be useful. There are lots of links in the article to external websites, but what about other articles and topics related to the list?

Those are my thoughts. Let me know if you have any additional questions. I think it's a great looking article so far. I've seen too many things get deleted though, so make sure you add some sources! ChildofMidnight (talk) 05:23, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

1) There is no equivalent to Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities for the Philippines and no National umbrella organizations like the NIC, NPC or NPHC (The Greeks in Puerto Rico are more organized as a group than those in the Philippines.) I don't think there are many good books about the Greeks in the Philippines (I own a good number of the ones about the USA including Several editions of Baird's and some of Hank Nuwer's books). Most of these groups are self referenced for their Wikipedia pages, though the groups that have their own domains that look good tend not to get challenged as much as others.

2) Thank you. It really wasn't before. I count what I'm doing as salvaging it. I'm the original creator of it when I took the large number of Filipino ones that had been added to the List of Fraternities and Sororities and created a page of their own for them, somewhat to cut down on the good faith edits but uncaring edits there. Take a look at the state of the page as of a month ago.

3) Right now, this is Step one, I'm just trying to find *any* reference for most of them. I got my knuckles rapped for deleting what had been edited by non-registered users without having a reason other than personal feelings, so I'm doing this to at least get a feeling for what they have out on the net. A good number only show up on alumni.net, yahoo groups, friendster or youtube. While using where they show up to prove notability sucks, I'm not sure there is anything else that makes sense (Number of chapters certainly doesn't since one of the best known and oldest only exists on the main campus of the University of the Philippines and one other UP campus). After I get done with that, I can move on to step two which is proposing a system and which ones should get deleted based on that. I'll post it to the Talk page and after *no one* comments for two weeks, I'll go ahead and do it. (Unfortunately)

4) I'll try to add an intro paragraph, but almost nothing I could add there are things that I can reference. :( And with that little there, I don't think there is enough for a separate article, but I'd love for someone to know enough to create it.

Do you want to move this conversation to the talk page for the article?Naraht (talk) 14:01, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

You're welcome to copy my comments over to the article talk page. It's unfortunate there aren't better sources because many editors here don't seem to think frats and sororities are notable. Given their history I think they are a good subject to include in the encyclopedia. Let me know if I can be of any help. ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:00, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Fraternities and Sororities

I saw your comment on the AfD on Alpha Theta Sigma, and while I agree on the Deletion of Alpha Theta Sigma, I am concerned on your sweeping statement about Fraternities. Can you give me a general feeling for the appropriate number of Collegiate Greek Letter Organizations that you consider to be actually notable? For example, do you consider Sigma Nu (which I picked at random from the members of the North-American Interfraternity Conference), a Social Fraternity with approximately 200 collegiate chapters that has existed for 125 years to be notable enough for an article?Naraht (talk) 20:17, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

I guess so. I don't live in North America so I am detached from the hyper-importance that most people attach to their fraternities, though. Stifle (talk) 20:20, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
