Tech News: 2024-20
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- On Wikisource there is a special page listing pages of works without corresponding scan images. Now you can use the new magic word
__EXPECTWITHOUTSCANS__
to exclude certain pages (list of editions or translations of works) from that list. [1] - If you use the user-preference "Show preview without reloading the page", then the template-page feature "Preview page with this template (what's this?)" will now also work without reloading the page. [2]
- Kartographer maps can now specify an alternative text via the
alt=
attribute. This is identical in usage to thealt=
attribute in the image and gallery syntax. An exception for this feature is wikis like Wikivoyage where the miniature maps are interactive. [3] - The old Guided Tour for the "New Filters for Edit Review" feature has been removed. It was created in 2017 to show people with older accounts how the interface had changed, and has now been seen by most of the intended people. [4]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 May. It will be on all wikis from 16 May (calendar). [5][6]
- The Special:Search results page will now use CSS flex attributes, for better accessibility, instead of a table. If you have a gadget or script that adjusts search results, you should update your script to the new HTML structure. [7]
Future changes
- In the Vector 2022 skin, main pages will be displayed at full width (like special pages). The goal is to keep the number of characters per line large enough. This is related to the coming changes to typography in Vector 2022. Learn more. [8]
- Two columns of the
pagelinks
database table (pl_namespace
andpl_title
) are being dropped soon. Users must use two columns of the newlinktarget
table instead (lt_namespace
andlt_title
). In your existing SQL queries:- Replace
JOIN pagelinks
withJOIN linktarget
andpl_
withlt_
in theON
statement - Below that add
JOIN pagelinks ON lt_id = pl_target_id
- See phab:T222224 for technical reasoning. [9][10]

Did you choose "Queen of Hearts" because of that being your favourite playing card or character from Alice in Wonderland? --72.69.145.55 (talk) 07:42, 15 May 2024 (UTC) https://posterfoundry.com/queen-of-hearts-card-poster/
- The playing card; I had no idea of the Alice in Wonderland character until after I renamed. Cheers, Queen of Hearts (talk) 00:05, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

Communist News Network moved to draftspace
An article you recently created, Communist News Network, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Dan arndt (talk) 06:27, 18 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Dan arndt: why would you draftify a redirect? Thanks, Diverging Diamond (is Queen of Hearts's alt; talk) 07:03, 18 May 2024 (UTC)
- moved back per DRAFTOBJECT. Queen of Hearts (talk) 19:11, 18 May 2024 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Frederick H. Bealefeld III
The article Frederick H. Bealefeld III you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:Frederick H. Bealefeld III for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of the article. Message delivered by ChristieBot, on behalf of Tails Wx -- Tails Wx (talk) 23:01, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
RfC Closure request
Hi... Do you mind to close RfC at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Lists#Rfc: inclusion of -elect official into List of president/vice president/prime minister. Thank you. Ckfasdf (talk) 08:18, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- The talk page is borked somehow in the round-robin move you have made. 😂 Mind untangling it?
- There is also Ajay Kumar Singh (Bihar politician, Bharatiya Janata Party) article. I am not sure which of the two are more notable. Being in the current parliament does not make him more notable than the other person if he has nothing else to show for. I suggest moving it back unless there are additional content to differentiate the two people in other ways.
Courtesy ping to User:Sohom Datta, who has been named in the edit summary of the page move Special:Diff/1226425611 as the requestor. – robertsky (talk) 15:41, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, @Robertsky. Regarding the first point, unless I messed something up really bad, I don't think the page had a talkpage before the move, so I've just replaced the circular redir with {{WPBS}}. That said, I'm off to lunch, so I'll evaluate the rest once I get back home. Queen of Hearts (talk) 15:53, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- I did not see the Ajay Kumar Singh (Bihar politician, Bharatiya Janata Party) page before requesting the move. However, my initial evaluation of the pages was that the congress politician (due to their status as a congress district head) had significantly more coverage than their Bharatiya Janata Party counterpart. I'm open to being dissuaded about this (since I realize I might not have considered recency as a parameter in my initial search for sources). Sohom (talk) 16:06, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Sohom Datta, the only thing I gather from the articles (without searching elsewhere) are that both are/were members of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and are of different parties. Nothing on being a district head or whatsoever. There is nothing else to substantiate an evaluation of which of the two are more notable. Hence in my opener,
unless there are additional content to differentiate the two people in other ways
. Mind expanding the article(s) further? Also, you might want to drop a hatnote {{for}} or {{confused}} so that people still know that there is another article in this partial dab arrangement? – robertsky (talk) 17:03, 30 May 2024 (UTC)- Okay, lol, I give up, I thought this would be a relatively simple job, but it seems like the sources are all over the place on this. <rant> If all sources are correct, I have found over 6 people named "Ajay Kumar Singh" who have in some way, shape or form contested and won seats in the Bihar Legislative Council under a variety of different parties (including in one case, having contested a election through their wife who was married days before the election). Not only that, in some cases "Ajay Kumar Singh" are arbitrarily referred to as "Ajay Singh" by a variety of publications which complicates finding sources even further.</rant>
- T.L.D.R, unless Aviram7 can provide more context/sources on this, it might just make sense to undo the move and keep both the politicians in the same hierarchy (disambiguation wise) for now. Also, I will double check and make sure my name is not secretly Ajay Kumar Singh and I haven't accidentally contested a ballot for the Bihar Legislative Council. Sohom (talk) 03:09, 31 May 2024 (UTC)

- @Sohom Datta: As I told you earlier on discord that I tried to find more information about him, but I am not able to find other information about him like his personal life, education, past life and other things because when I searched his name on Google, I found MLA of Bharatiya Janata Party from Bihar with the same name and there were others as you mentioned above, however I am trying to find information, when I checked on Wikipedia, I saw Ajay Kumar Singh (Bihar politician, Bharatiya Janata Party) and I thought of creating an article about Ajay Kumar Singh (Bihar politician, Indian National Congress) and I created it, my suggestion would be if this article is transferred to the old name without leaving it and hatnote is added to both articles, only then it will be good, however I am moving forward to create articles of other politicians of Bihar on Wikipedia. Happy editing ᗩvírαm7 • [@píng mє] 05:53, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Robertsky, Sohom Datta, and Aviram7: Per above, I have moved the page back and will redirect (Bihar politician) to Ajay Kumar Singh as incomplete disambiguation. Cheers, Queen of Hearts (🏳️⚧️ • 🏳️🌈) 05:58, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
- P.S. I was also unaware of the BJP politician; I wouldn't have done the move if I were aware. Queen of Hearts (🏳️⚧️ • 🏳️🌈) 06:11, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
