Well, you see Anthony Bradbury, I'm using my school-issued iPad. They blocked Safari on our iPads. I was able to also get the Puffin broswer before they locked our App Store also.

Okay, time out, sorry. I agree that adding detail to Karkat's section wasn't a format change, although I believe it was no less supported than the previous description. I got mad that you reverted my switch from (=== [troll name] ===) to (;[troll name]), because unlike (;[troll name]) that format allows linking to individual [troll names], which to me is a clear upgrade. Also, I'm not really sure what you mean by that signature advice. Where should I put the (~~~~) tags?

IMHO, if you want to make that same edit again that I reverted, by all means, please do. But I think what you should do is discuss it on the talk page of the article, and see if people agree to your edit. If there is consensus for the edit, then you may do the edit. AWB inconsequential edits

Hi Yoshi. Edits like this, this, or this don't meet the rules of use, as they are purely cosmetic edits. I see that you've been warned about this once in the past. Please carefully review any clean up edits you're making and ensure they make a substantial non-cosmetic change to the page. Using AWB to place orphan tags, etc. is fine, but using it to change template names from their redirects to the actual template name, change whitespace, etc. is not in the absence of another substantial change in the same edit. Skip --> General skip options --> Check the "Only genfixes", "Only whitespace", and "Only cosmetic changes" boxes. The only surefire way is to review every single edit you make with AWB, though, which is required by our bot policy anyway. ~ Rob13Talk 19:12, 30 October 2016 (UTC)

  • Featured Article – Cas Liber (actually a three-way tie with themselves for two FAs in each of R2, R3, and R5).
  • Good Article – MPJ-DK had 14 GAs promoted in R3.
  • Featured List – England Calvin999 (submissions) produced 2 FLs in R2
  • Featured Pictures – Adam Cuerden restored 18 images to FP status in R4.
  • Featured Portal – Yakutsk SSTflyer (submissions) produced the only FPO of the Cup in R2.
  • Featured Topic – Connecticut Cyclonebiskit (submissions) and Calvin were each responsible for one FT in R3 and R2, respectively.

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup

Greetings, all!

We would like to announce the start of the 4th GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Thus far, there have been three GA Cups, which were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 400 nominations listed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time.

The 4th GA Cup will begin on November 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on February 28, 2017), but this may change based on participant numbers. We may take a break in December for the holidays, depending on the results of a poll of our participants taken shortly after the competition begins. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same, as will the scoring.

Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on November 14, 2016. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now!

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

New Page Review needs your help

Hi Yoshi24517,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

Split Movie Edit

Hi Yoshi,

I removed the piece on the movie Split about it being a "thematic sequel to Unbreakable" because that piece of information is incredibly revealing to the plot of the film. It is the very definition of a spoiler, and should not be on the page. Please remove that portion as I had earlier so that future moviegoers don't have the ending spoiled. I saw a screening the other night of the film and director M. Night Shyamalan spoke and he asked everyone to please keep that information a secret. So on behalf of him and everyone else involved with the movie, as well as diehard fans, I ask you to please remove any information from Split's page regarding it being a sequel to Unbreakable. I put that in my edit explanation and thought it was sufficient enough. People don't want the movie ruined for them. Vandalism?

Hello, the band's full name which I added to the Lee Hazlewood-article is actually as I stated, containing the offensive word s*x in it. I'm sorry, it wouldn't be my choice of name, but it is as it is. If there is a policy here on Wikipedia to shorten it as Carter USM it should have been stated above the article on that group, or on the redirecting page Carter_usm&redirect=no, don't you think so? If censorship is the decision I'll have to obey to it.

I appreciate it! But this rule of thumb, or recommendation if you will, applies to all new pages, not just those part of an editathon. The tags you added are perfectly valid, and not inherently wrong, but it should take you all of a few minutes to help add them yourself – with that you hopefully will walk away with a bigger sense of reward than you would tagging how every many pages you could in the same amount of time. This is completely factually and historically inaccurate as Serfdom was only introduced decades after his death. I am keeping the edit. Red-linked category

Many thanks for removing the deleted category from your userpage. I had a few redlinked categories myself, until it was pointed out to me how they got in the way of maintenance work.

Wikipedia editors have a fair amount of leeway on how to what to do our user pages ... but the problem with redlinked categories is that they don't only exist on user pages -- they create an error in the category system. The future of NPP and AfC

The coordinators will do their best for for the advancement of the improvement of NPP and AfC and generally keep tracks on the development of those things. Coordinators have no additional or special user benefits, but they will be 'go to' people and will try to keep discussions in the right places. This very much involves this project too, especially with growing renewed interest around the site about what WP:ACTRIAL was all about.

March 2017 WikiCup newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
  • European Union Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
  • Japan 1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
  • South Australia Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.

The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by Vivvt and The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN. Carbrera and Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.

So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

response to my recent edit

Hello Yoshi,

As part of a Wiki Education Foundation course at UC Berkeley, my group and I have been updating the Clean Water Rule page and noticed that there was a page for Waters of the United States which we feel should redirect to Clean Water Rule due to their overlapping subject matter. The Clean Water Rule is often referred to as the WOTUS rule and the content on that page is included in the page for Clean Water Rule, albeit lacking completeness.

Please reconsider your reversion. I noticed that it was instantaneous and suspect the use of a bot was in play?

Help me

I have a question. I have seen bots at work, and would like to start having my own bot. I would like to use AWB for it, on CHECKWIKI task 1, with Templates using the word "template" in the actual template. It would just find and replace {{Template with {{. Would that be a good idea for a bot? I know what I want to name it, but the name I want to use is already taken. See here for an example. Would it be a good idea. Let me know. Thanks! Pan-Orthodox Council

Hi,

Yoshi24517. I am messaging you because I have been editing the article "Pan Orthodox Synod." The original creator/editor has been structuring the article in an overyly biased manner that does not reflect the format of encyclopedia, but is instead very idiosyncratic and designed to propagate personal views on the subject, some of which are objectively and factually incorrect.

Until recently I was reluctant to communicate with the person doing that because I have dealt with such people in the past and have found them to be very stubborn and unwilling to develop a true consensus. They seem interested only in advansing their agenda while bashing the people they disagree with. Such behaviour and articles are unworthy of the encyclopedia format Wikipedia uses.

For a long time, I was editing the article accordingly without an account. But recently the original/editor has gotten very agressive with his turning the article into propaganda for his idiosyncratic views and so that resulted in my getting equally aggressive in attempting to revert the article to its previous balance. Regretably, though, the last few edits were done sloppily and I ended up with a warning about being blocked. This prompted me to create the account and contact you. I hope you can get back at me and understand my position.

Here is a list of examples:

1) The previous editors put the Orthodox Church in America in an ambivalent light towards the Council. As a member of that Church, I can tell you that is not true at all. Our scholars were also among the drafters of a letter sent to every Church urging them to attend and not give in to the pressure of extremists voices subjecting certain Churches to pressure not to attend. Here is the letter http://myocn.net/over-1000-orthodox-scholars-urge-the-council-to-be-held-in-june-2016/ (notice all the scholars from the OCA).

I edited the section to reflect this reality, but the editors keep reverting it to their biased way. Therefore, I consider them to be vandalizing the article, since they are doing it repeatedly.

2) They provided the coat of arms of the pullout Churches, but not the attendee. This was a very deliberate move designed to create an impression in the minds of the reader. Again, this is not encyclopedic, but propagandic in nature.

3) The letter of Patriarch Bartholomew was then referenced to in manner that is misrepresented. The proper translation of the letter can be seen here: https://panorthodoxcemes.blogspot.gr/2016/12/the-trute-traslation-in-english-of.html From the actual letter we can gather a few facts the Patriarch is not demanding deposition of the clerics in question. He is asking for admonishment. The true translation also reveals that the Patriarch is also not against the group's opposition to the Council per se, but to the way the group has been conducting their crusade. This is evident in the letter's description of the group. The Patriarch knows there are critics and knows two of the pulout Churches have taken a hard stand against the Council and the other two a reserved one. There is no criticism there. The difference between the pullout Churches and the group is that the pullout Churches have disagreed in a respectful manner while the group in question has been acting in extreme ways to the point of calling the Council "heretical" and implying its participants, especially the Patriarch himself such and pretending to be expressing the concience of the Church of Greece (which similar conduct has been denounced by the Holy Synods of other autoecphalous Churches, including the very Church of Greece herself). Here is the real attitude of the Church of Greece's, which is obviously very different from what is being promoted in the wikipedia article.

The wikipedia article also claims, using a very selective Catholic source, that it is unprecedented for the Holy Synod of a Local Church to cease communion with particular hierarchs of another Local Orthodox Church. This is obviously not true at all. Anyone who has read Church history knows that in the ancient Church anyone could and did break communion with whoever they felt necesarry. The most prominent example is the excommunications between Patriarch Michael Kerularios and Cardinal Humbert (a representative of Pope Leo, but not Leo himself) when the latter excommunicated the former. That is still practiced in the Church today. If those clergy from Greece have judged the Council in Crete to be "heretical" and the Ecumenical Patriarch a "heretic" then that pretty much says everything about "communion." They should either attend to the consequences of their actions or ceize their accusations. Also, they are involving themselves in a Pan Orthodox issue, so it is well within the perogatives of the EP to respond to them.

In summary, there is nothing wrong in the letter. It is just that the group in question does not want to be hindered and so sought to criticize it through misrepresentation.

Yoshi, I hope you consider this and agree that the article as it is is unworthy of wikipedia, which I am sure most readers would appreciate it if the article reflected an encyclopedic format, intead of using the page for mere propaganda of certain people own idiosyncratic views. I will try to clean it up and reason with the editor(s). But I have experience with such people and know they are often unwilling to reason and come to a consensus with those they disagree with. Please, don't block me for my attempts at cleaning up the article (though sometimes I am not so successful). Elorthodox (talk) 19:21, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

Huggle "automated" reports

Could you explain what's going on with this diff? I was under the impression all reports via Huggle are approved by the editor making the report. If so, you need to include a rationale. @BU Rob13: Hey Rob! What Huggle does, is when somebody is on their 4th warning (e.g. received 4 warnings), and they vandalize again and somebody reverts them on Huggle, it automatically (or should I say, semi-automatically) posts a report at WP:AIV with the name of the vandalizing user, and it says to check the contribs of the user (for false positives). There is a preference that will let you do that instead of clicking on each revision manually and posting it (it saves time). Widr knows I do this, as I've had the function on for quite some time, and he just blocks them and we're all good. Let me know if you have any more questions. May 2017 WikiCup newsletter

The second round of the competition has now closed, with just under 100 points being required to qualify for round 3. YellowEvan just scraped into the next round with 98 points but we have to say goodbye to the thirty or so competitors who didn't achieve this threshold; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, led the field with five featured articles, four on birds and one on astronomy, and a total score of 2049, half of which came from bonus points.
  • Japan 1989 was in second place with 826 points, 466 of which were bonus points. 1989 has claimed points mostly relating to anime and Japanese-related articles.
  • South Australia Peacemaker67 took third place with two FAs, one GA and seven GARs, mostly on naval vessels or military personnel, scoring 543 points.
  • Other contestants who scored over 400 points were Freikorp, Carbrera, and Czar. Of course all these points are now wiped out and the 32 remaining contestants start again from zero in round 3.

Vivvt submitted the largest number of DYKs (30), and MBlaze Lightning achieved 13 articles at ITN. Carbrera claimed for 11 GAs and Argento Surfer performed the most GARs, having reviewed 11. So far we have achieved 38 featured articles and a splendid 132 good articles. Commendably, 279 GARs have been achieved so far, more than double the number of GAs.

So, on to the third round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

WikiCup 2017 July newsletter

The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year. Coemgenus and Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.

Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles. PanagiotisZois and SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles. Carbrera led the GA score with 10, Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. WikiCup 2017 September newsletter

Round 4 of the WikiCup has ended and we move forward into the final round. In round 4, a total of 12 FAs, 3 FLs, 44 GAs, 3 FLs, 79 DYKs, 1 ITN and 42 GARs was achieved, with no FPs or FTs this time. Congratulations to Peacemaker67 on the Royal Yugoslav Navy Good Topic of 36 items, and the 12 featured articles achieved by Cas Liber (5), Vanamonde93 (3), Peacemaker67 (2), Adityavagarwal (1) and 12george1 (1). With a FA scoring 200 points, and bonus points available on top of this, FAs are likely to feature heavily in the final round. Meanwhile Yellow Evan, a typhoon specialist, was contributing 12 DYKs and 10 GAs, while Adityavagarwal and Freikorp topped the GAR list with 8 reviews each. As we enter the final round, we are down to eight contestants, and we would like to thank those of you who have been eliminated for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. The lowest score needed to reach round 5 was 305, and I think we can expect a highly competitive final round.

Red category

Hello Yoshi,

Regarding your edit here, I understand that you like red categories, but... the trouble with categories is that they don't affect just your user page. Red categories create an error in the category system, and they interfere with the work of editors who perform category maintenance tasks at Special:WantedCategories—see WP:REDNOT for further details.

I would be grateful if you would take off the category, or at least change the category code to [[:Category:Wikipedians who actually have a job]], so that this category will not show up in Special:WantedCategories forever.

WikiCup 2017 November newsletter: Final results

The final round of the 2017 WikiCup is over. Congratulations to the 2017 WikiCup top three finalists:

In addition to recognizing the achievements of the top finishers and everyone who worked hard to make it to the final round, we also want to recognize those participants who were most productive in each of the WikiCup scoring categories:

  • Featured Article – Cas Liber (actually a two-way tie with themselves for an astonishing five FAs in R2 and R4).
  • Good Article – Adityavagarwal had 14 GAs promoted in R5.
  • Featured List – Canada Bloom6132 (submissions) and Japan 1989 (submissions) both produced 2 FLs in R2
  • Featured Pictures – Cascadia SounderBruce (submissions) improved an image to FP status in R5, the only FP this year.
  • Featured Topic – Denmark MPJ-DK (submissions) has the only FT of the Cup in R3.
  • Good Topic – Four different editors created a GT in R2, R3 and R4.
  • Did You Know – Adityavagarwal had 22 DYKs on the main page in R5.
  • In The News – India MBlaze Lightning (submissions) had 14 ITN on the main page in R2.
  • Good Article Review – India Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (submissions) completed 31 GARs in R1.

Over the course of the 2017 WikiCup the following content was added or improved on Wikipedia: 51 Featured Articles, 292 Good Articles, 18 Featured Lists, 1 Featured Picture, 1 Featured Topics, 4 Good Topics, around 400 Did You Knows, 75 In The News, and 442 Good Article Reviews. Thank you to all the competitors for your hard work and what you have done to improve Wikipedia.
