I created a WikiKitBag for Wikipedia Trainers along with my Wikimedian colleague Sara Thomas; covering what they need to run editing training sessions and preparing editathons. Etherpad notes from this session can be found here
I created a blog article for Ada Lovelace Day - Desperately Seeking Ada.
I edited a number of videos from Repo Fringe 2016 which have been uploaded to Youtube and migrated these across (along with 30 other media clips) to a newly created 'Wikimedian in Residence' channel on the the University of Edinburgh's 'Media Hopper' service:

- Camtasia screen capture tutorial - How to construct Wikidata queries - by Navino Evans. This last one in particular has received 377 views, 21 likes, 17 retweets since its uploading on 2nd September 2016 and has now been added to the MediaWiki page of instructions for the Wikidata Query Service here.
I have also added the Intro to Wikidata video of my presentation to the 'Wikimedian in Residence' channel on Media Hopper. I'm told it is the most liked video on the Wikimedia UK channel in the last 18 months.

Objectives[edit]

G1: Develop Open Knowledge	Be an advocate or open knowledge within the University's collections and community, which would enrich Wikipedia and sister projects and enhance the University's role in open knowledge and public engagement. Identify opportunities for content improvement and image releases.
G2a: Develop, involve & engage WMUK volunteers	Organise and host workshops for University staff, students and public to enable them to directly contribute their knowledge and expertise to develop Wikipedia articles.

Outcomes[edit]

This month covers the period prior to this from 12th August to 11th September 2016 focused on preparing for the many editathon events we have planned for Autumn/Winter this year (particularly Ada Lovelace Day 2016) as well as editing video footage arising from the Wikidata & Wikisource Showcase for Repository Fringe 2016.
I created 7 new videos which I have uploaded to my Youtube channel which now takes the number of videos on it to 27. I have also migrated across these videos (& others) to the University of Edinburgh's 'Media Hopper' where I have created a 'Wikimedian in Residence' channel which now has 43 media clips. I am also liaising with Karen Gregory in Digital Sociology about conducting a video interview with her.
I have continued liaising with Dr. Cathy Southworth at the Centre for Regenerative Medicine regarding setting up Wikipedia editing sessions for Eurostemcell content at European partner labs in Denmark on 30th November and we have now secured a Wiki trainer in Copenhagen to lead this event.
I prepared & lead the training (along with my colleague Sara Thomas) of twelve learning technologists and academic support librarians to to become Wikipedia Trainers/Ambassadors at an event on 23rd August 2016.
I trained 28 members of staff and 7 students during this month.
I have continued preparations with Dr. Charlotte Bosseaux of the Translation Studies MSc course to run a semester-long (4000 word) project using Wikipedia's Content Translation tool this semester (beginning 23rd September) and the plan is now to run the assignment again in semester 2 as well.
I also continued to liaised with Professor Alexander Chow who wishes to include a Wikipedia assignment in this semester's World Christianity postgraduate taught course and a Women in Religion editathon on 2nd November.
I have continued my Skype sessions: with Richard Nevell at WMUK in preparation for the Translation Studies assignment; and with John Cummings, Wikimedian in Residence at UNESCO in preparation for the Library & Special Collections 'taster' sessions.
I attended, with Sara Thomas, the Historic Environment Scotland Dataset Showcase on 6th September 2016 where we made the case for Historic Environment Scotland involvement with Wikidata.
I met with Professor Gary West to discuss Scottish Studies involvement in our Samhain editathon event and making use of the Scottish Studies archive.
I also set up & attended working group meetings to discuss the upcoming editathon events for: Women and Religion; Edinburgh Gothic; Samhain; History of Medicine; and Ada Lovelace Day.
The Open Education Team, of which the Wikimedia residency is part, came 3rd in the ALT Learning Technologist of the Year Awards.
I attended meetings with Jordanna Kielty-O'Neill at Surgeons' Hall and Daisy Cunynghame of the Royal College of Physicians with a view to both organisations being involved (& potentially hosting) the History of Medicine 2017 editathon in February 2017.
Finally, I was interviewed by Beck Pitt of Opening Educational Practices in Scotland on 31st August 2016.

Partnered with Yujia Xie to develop artwork for the Samhain editathon and Stuart Brett to develop artwork for the Ada Lovelace editathon.
Partnered with Gill Hamilton (National Library of Scotland) for the Edinburgh Gothic event - which will be supported, if not attended by Penny Fielding (Grierson Chair of English and Head of English Literature at the University of Edinburgh). The University of Sheffield's Centre for Gothic Studies are also wanting to be involved and/or run a synchronous event in Sheffield.
Partnered with Digital Curator Gavin Willshaw to run 'taster' training sessions for Library & Special Collections' staff and look into the best way of bulk importing CC-BY images from the Luna image database.
Partnered with Hamish Macleod of the PgCAP course to embed Wikipedia within the course design for future years.
Partnered with Kacper Lyskiewicz to continue supporting the 4 week Wikipedia training course we developed for the Online History MSc course on their VLE.
Partnered with Peter Evans, Sian Bayne & Christine Sinclair of the Digital Education MSc course to see if Wikipedia training can be embedded in their course design as part of the 'Wider Themes' module.
Partnered with James Smith (Vice Principal - International) to deliver an International Alumni editathon event in October 2016. (This has been put on the back-burner for now so maybe later in the session.)
Partnered with Alexander Chow to deliver a Wikipedia assignment on the World Christianity PGT course and to hold a Women and Religion editathon on 2nd November 2016 in collaboration with WikiProject Women in Red.

Partnered with Histropedia's Navino Evans to create more helpful Wikidata video tutorials given the success of the first batch.

Partnered with Dr. Chris Harlow (Reproductive Biology) and Kelly Doyle (Wikimedian in Residence for Gender Equality at West Virginia University) to deliver a Reproductive Medicine Wikipedia research session/ editathon on 21st & 28th September 2016.
Partnered with Wikiproject Women in Red's Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight & Penny Fielding to run Spy Week 2017 next year. Wikiproject Women in Red have also said they would like to help support our Women and Religion editathon in November.
Partnered with Dr. Charlotte Bosseaux to run a 4000 word translation assignment using Wikipedia in next semester's Translation Studies MSc course.

To contact Rich Farnborough about using the AutoWikiBrowser tool for pulling in all the uncategorised images on WikiCommons uploaded in our earlier editathons.
To write a post for IS News on the Train the Trainers event and 4 editathons we have coming up.

Projects Delivered[edit]

7 new videos created & uploaded.
A new 'Wikimedian in Residence' channel created on Media Hopper and populated with 43 videos.
I delivered two Wikipedia training sessions.
I prepared and delivered a training session for 12 members of staff to become Wikimedia Trainers themselves.
Overhauled the Wikipedia:University of Edinburgh residency page and populated course details of Wikipedia's use in Higher Education on the Wikipedia in Education page and the Universities page on Wikimedia UK's site.

'150 years since the foundation of Regius Chair of Engineering' - Professor Gordon Masterton at the School of Engineering has contacted me about a possible collaboration with a view to this anniversary in 2017/2018. (To be confirmed)
'International alumni - Vice Principal (International), James Smith, has been authorised to erect a number of blue plaques celebrating the contribution of Edinburgh University's international alumni on the international stage. I have been tasked with identifying suitably notable subjects for our historians to investigate & help create articles on. (To be confirmed).
Vet School editing training for Staff CPD - mooted for October/November 2016. Update 14/09 - Jessie Paterson of Veterinary Medicine is to attend the Reproductive Biomedicine sessions on 21st/28th September to see how this could be replicated in Veterinary Medicine while a follow up Veterinary Medicine editing session has been booked in for 26th October.
A continuation of the Eurostemcell editathon - with European partner labs this time - In discussions with Dr. Cathy Southworth about holding an editing session in late Autumn with a Danish partner lab if a Copenhagen-based Wikipedia trainer can be sourced. Update 14/09 - The editathon is going ahead in a European partner lab in Copenhagen on 30th November now that a Danish Wikipedia trainer has been sourced.
Digital Education MSc - Discussions to take place about how to embed an element of Wikipedia training within this course on the Wider Themes module. Update 14/09 - Meeting to discuss this arrnaged for 3rd October 2016.
National Library of Scotland - Kelvinhall relaunch Wikimedia event - To be confirmed as project is delayed. Update 14/09 - The Kelvin Hall has just opened as of 14th September so once everything has settled down we can then plan for a Moving Image editathon there.
Edinburgh Gothic - Planned in for 12th November which will cover art, architecture, music, literature (historic and contemporary), film. Penny Fielding at the English Literature department is supporting the project as are the National Library of Scotland (hosting the event), the National Galleries of Scotland and the University of Sheffield's Centre for Gothic Studies.
Translate-a-thon - Reaching out to international students to translate articles from English Wikipedia to their own native language Wikipedia. To run on 23rd September 2016 and 30th September as part of the Translation studies MSc course.
Festival of Architecture 2016 - Have contacted a number of people at the Edinburgh College of Art and at the Festival of Architecture itself about potentially running an architecture-themed editathon to celebrate the Festival of Architecture 2016.Update 16/09 - The finale for FOA is 18th November 2016 so have put out feelers to FOA and the Edinburgh College of Art about whether we could put something on for this event.
Between the worlds of the living and the dead - An editathon for Halloween/Samhain 2016 celebrating the lives of those who have passed on through creating Wikipedia pages utilising obituaries from Scottish newspaper archives and celebrating Celtic history & folklore.
The Library & University Collections - a number of recommendations have been submitted to the L&UC team for suggested editathon events which may be the best vehicle for making best use of their collection materials and opening them up to a global community. Taster training sessions have been identified as the way to take this forward.
Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology - Cara Jones, Adopt-a-Monument Project Manager from Archaeology Scotland, has suggested a collaboration on an archaeology editathon, which was one of my suggestions to the L&UC team.
Botanic Concrete - Govanhill Community Editathon collaboration proposed with Viviana Checchia, Public Engagement Curator at the Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow.
Divinity editathon - to be held at New College immediately prior to running the Wikipedia assignment as part of the World Christianity MSc course.
The History of Nursing editathon - mooted for Friday 4th November 2016. Liaising with Marshall Dozier, Academic Support Librarian, about this and about potentially being involved in educating secondary school children about information literacy through Wikipedia. Update 16/09 - This may now be included in the History of Medicine 2017 editathon we have planeed for 21-22 February 2017.
