We are studying three key scenes in American literary history where significant voices are missing from the traditional canon--and we are also investigating how this traditional canon relates to the archive. Our three key scenes are: 1) indigenous perspectives on the colonial encounter, especially as it was revisited in the nineteenth century; 2) women's literature in the early twentieth century, especially in relation to World War I and suffrage; and 3) Black American writers use of folk tales in the New Negro Renaissance, especially the controversial use of vernacular. The Wikipedia assignment allows us to enrich the archive that can support an expanded American literary canon.
