New photos available of Italian architecture

I'm happy to inform you that now we have thousands of new photos of architecture in Italy, from ancient to contemporary, thanks to the donation of the Paolo Monti digitalized archive (17.000 images) by the BEIC Foundation (who acquired the full archive in 2008 and has the full rights). Paolo Monti was a famous photographer from Milan and shoot the photos with permission by architects, for catalogues and magazines (so we don't have problems with the typical lack of panorama freedom in Italy). See a selected gallery. All those beautiful images now need only to be used in Wikipedia articles. Do you like to help us? All images are in Commons:category:Photographs by Paolo Monti. Architecture of Las Vegas

The Venturi and Scott Brown sources, and the sources about them, only really take one as far as the middle 1990s. It would be good to extend the article into covering the state of the city as of the 21st century. There's a lot more to be brought from Jaschke & Ötsch 2003, also. Distribution of building ages by locale

Sorry if this is a FAQ, but I am interested in seeing representations (e.g. histograms or similar) of building ages by location (e.g. for various regions/countries/cities). For example, the Haussmann renovation of Paris would result in a spike not seen in some other areas; the cities most heavily damaged in WWII would similarly have a spike after 1945. There are a few graphs related to energy efficiency that focus on construction during the 20th century, but I have not seen representations that go further back - maybe I'm just missing it (e.g. using the wrong search terms). Auto-assessment of article classes

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

Probably best of two evils - even the most important buildings or local styles will be low importance for the country or city concerned, but you will remove the unclassified ones. Some odd things will be massively over-rated - stadia perhaps. The current ratings are pretty useless anyway - entirelyt so if no one actually acts on them. The Visual art project rightly just doesn't do importance ratings. Johnbod (talk) 15:35, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
@Johnbod: To be clear, this task does not inherit importance ratings whatsoever, since these vary quite a bit from project to project. It just inherits class ratings (stub, start, etc). From a technical standpoint, I could inherit importance ratings if a project requested it and showed consensus, but I obviously couldn't guarantee accuracy to any degree. Incorrect ratings would likely be extraordinarily high, and I wouldn't recommend such a task. ~ RobTalk 11:55, 5 June 2016 (UTC)

Cronkhill and Attingham Park

I would be interested in the views of others as to the commissioner of/patron for Cronkhill. All the sources I have access to state that it was Francis Walford, agent to and friend of Lord Berwick. These sources include Newman and Pevsner's Shropshire, "The house was built for Francis Walford" (p=240); Mansbridge's John Nash: A complete catalogue, "Built for Francis Walford.." (p=101); BLBO, "Cronkhill was built for Francis Walford", here [1] and Historic England, text as before, here [2]. Colvin apparently also says Walford, although I do not have access to this.

However, until I altered it yesterday, the Wikipedia article stated the house was built for Lord Berwick. The bases for this claim appear to be that the land on which Cronkhill was built formed part of the Attingham Park estate; that the Berwicks lived in the house after Walford's departure circa 1820 and that Walford didn't become agent to Lord Berwick until some years after Cronkhill was built. All of this appears be supported by the National Trust website for Attingham Park, here [3]. This states, in a brief pop-up, that the house was "Designed by John Nash for The Second Lord Berwick" and describes the house as "a generous gesture for a friend". In short, this appears to suggest that Berwick commissioned, and paid for, the house and then "loaned/leased" it to Walford, regaining possession when their friendship was severed in 1828. This would appear to be supported by an entry in the National Archive, here [4], which talks of Francis Walford of Cronkhill leasing Cronkhill Farm from Lord Berwick in 1816.

I would be very grateful for views on the proper attribution for the Cronkhill article. The same issue occurs in the section on Cronkhill in the Attingham Park article. I have copied this enquiry to the Cronkhill Talkpage. Many thanks. KJP1 (talk) 08:47, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

Changes To Project Page

I'm not a member of this project, just a "regular" contributor/editor. So I wasn't certain if I should make changes to the project page itself. Let me know if I can/should make changes in the future. The one small item at the moment that I would like to see changed is the Featured Articles section. The sub-section of Good Articles has a separate grouping for 'cities/countries/regions', which the Featured Articles sub-section does not. I'd like for the 2 to be consistent. There's a few articles (abstract concepts/groups of buildings) currently under the 'buildings' group that could be grouped independently. Ivansevil (talk) 01:01, 12 August 2016 (UTC)

Importing national built heritage registers into Wikidata

Hi all

I'm working on the Connected Open Heritage project which plans to upload national built heritage registers to Wikidata (these are often the lists that WLM is based upon in each country). The first step is to create a worldwide list of built heritage registers on Wikipedia, we would really like your help in completing this list with your local knowledge. It should only take a few minutes to fill the information in for each country if you know who produces the information.

Fiesole Cathedral

It should have more info added. There should be a link for basilica floorplan, nave, martyrdom, Gothic medallions, vault, Bishop Jacopo the Bavarian, frescoes, Salutati Chapel, and bishop Leonardo Salutati. Can anyone find a ref for Opus emplectum?

Capel Manor House

Should anyone have the time/inclination, I'd be interested in their thoughts on the above. In 2012 it was flagged for deletion for copyright violation. It survived that challenge but I see the principal author has now been permanently banned for repeated copyright violation. The article certainly reads like a "lift" - it's highly POV and very largely uncited. I strongly suspect it merits a very vigorous pruning, but I'd be interested in others' thoughts. This article's recently pass GA and I've now put it up for Peer Review. It's a notable building in its own right, as the only example of its type left in the UK, and also has some Wikipedia notability as the, semi-official, symbol of Monmouth, The World's First Wikipedia Town. I have heard by word of mouth that when Chicago Title & Trust moved from 161 North Clark to 10 South LaSalle they bought the naming rights for the new building. Architectural design optimization

Can someone familiar with architecture tell me if this concept is necessary as a discrete article, or could it be merged elsewhere? I did a quick Google search but most of the stuff I found is a little too technical for me. Expert assistance sought for Rammed earth

I recently came across Rammed earth, and as detailed on its Talk page and specifically the section I just added (Talk:Rammed_earth#Multiple_issues_(again)), it could use a little help from someone who knows a little bit more about the matter than I do. It's written in a rather promotional style, and could use some unbiased, referenced discussion on the technique's disadvantages. Better references are also desired all around, for reasons I mention in the link. It has the possibilities of being a decent article, it just needs some balance and credible citations.

Pier articles

I am looking to improve an article on a pier, though find it hard to see other similar articles according to their current quality classification to see what i'd need to do to bring it up to a particular quality rating (as they just generically fall under the "WP Architecture" setup). I can see a few years ago there was an attempt to start a wikiproject as a sub-project of Architecture, but this seems to have gone quiet over the years. Is there a way a pier article could be specifically specified as such on the talk page and thus create/be part of their own quality class categories, within the WP Archi setup (similar to how historic houses have their own set of categories as per a parameter on the WP template)? Breton 'maitres'

About List of the works of the Maître de Plougastel, the text suggests that is Maître de Plougastel is a person, but is that really the case? Plougastel-Daoulas is actually the name of the place where the works are located. It could be a coincidence that the name of a person and the name of a place coincide, however the same issue also applies to other articles in the same category. Three Villa d'Este mansions

There are three Villa d'Este mansions. There is Villa d'Este in Tivoli, Villa d'Este (Cernobbio) in Cernobbio, and Villa d'Este (Johannesburg) in Saxonwold, Johannesburg. I think we should reset Villa d'Este as a disambiguation page and then list them all with the location. That would entail moving Villa d'Este to Villa d'Este (Tivoli) first. I am not sure I can do this as a non-admin, without messing up the redirect (especially with the talkpages). Could an admin please take care of this?Zigzig20s (talk) 06:00, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

Some red-linked architects

There are three architects without articles at Surveyor of the Fabric of Westminster Abbey. Do people here think they meet Wikipedia's notability criteria? I think that more important is some discussion in that article as to exactly what the position is? As the the article currently is written it might as well be List of Surveyor of the Fabric of Westminster Abbey. I am guessing that the position is something akin to Architect of the Capitol in the United States, but the point of wikipeida (one of the points) is that it is here so readers do not have to guess. Documentation of lost architectural heritage

I am proposing some sort of collaboration so as to increase the coverage on Wikipedia about buildings/sites of architectural/heritage significance which have been demolished, destroyed or otherwise lost. The idea is that if such buildings are documented, they will not be forgotten. Are there any users who are interested to help create/translate articles about this subject?

I already created a few articles on this subject, such as the Monumental Arch of Palmyra (blown up by ISIS in 2015), the Church of San Salvatore, Campi (destroyed by an earthquake in 2016) and the Church of St. Lambertus, Immerath (demolished in 2018).

To-do list of some recently lost/destroyed buildings (sorted by the date of destruction/damage):

If anyone can add other buildings/sites to the above list, feel free to do so. My idea is to focus on sites which have been recently destroyed, but any lost buildings may be included.

This is an awesome idea, with a caveat. If these structures don't fall into the overly narrow parameters of Wikipedia notability for architecture they'll get flagged for deletion. Having said that, I'm currently working on an article about the Sé Cathedral of Salvador, Bahia, demolished in 1933. Prburley (talk) 19:13, 12 February 2018 (UTC)

Notability standards for architect bios (cf. Gary Haney)

Hi, WikiProject Architecture! I wanted to draw your attention to the AfD deletion discussion for Gary Haney. I'm sensitive to the problems of WP:CANVASS but I wanted to particularly invite comment on what the notability standards are for architect biography articles (also, "the talk page or noticeboard of one or more WikiProjects" is explicitly allowed). Because there is often not a lot of information out in the public record about architects, and because the limited information that is available is often in primary source form or directly associated with the architect's firm or the building's owner, it seems that biographical articles about architects are extremely vulnerable to criticisms of lack of notability, overdependance on primary sources, and original research. It seems to me that because of the nature of this subject matter, those criteria ought to be viewed with a bit more leniency than they might in some other areas of Wikipedia. The AfD closed with result keep. One of the questions that came up is whether the Wikipedia notability criteria are clear enough for cases like this. Notability wasn't seriously raised as an issue until the final day of the AfD, so it wasn't well-discussed, but I had been looking at the generic criteria of WP:NOTABLE and struggling a bit with it. @Johnbod: pointed out that WP:CREATIVE offers a slightly clearer view, and certainly that explicitly mentions architects. But I'm still not sure if there is some clarity we should attempt to work through in the notability standards for architects to avoid having this problem recur or to reach an inconsistent result if the AfD is handled differently. Edwin A. Keeble (potential POV-pushing)

User:Eagledj added a direct quote which sounds POV to me:

  • "...Edwin Keeble designed dozens of homes in our finest enclaves (and some of our more, shall we say, affordable ones, for that matter) and to say 'It's a Keeble,' about a seven-figure home is like putting a pretty corsage on an Armani tuxedo".

Hi Zigzig20s-- I share your concern, and I don't mind striking the quote or trimming it; however, it is a direct quote from a RS that has been given attribution. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.
