Joseon Tongsinsa

Hi, I am also very busy these days. However, this is serious, so I really need help. As User:Tenmei edits Korea-Japan history articles, Joseon Tongsinsa, Taejo of Joseon and Korean diplomats, he ignores Korean naming conventions and names, and removed contents. He also inserted unrelated or trivia and very old outdated sources to articles. So please join the discussion of Joseon Tongsinsa and Taejo of Joseon. I didn't say correctly. Joseon Tongsinsa is arbitrarily split to the two document by Tenmei. He cuted and pasted materials to Joseon missions to Japan. There was no discussion about the split. Korean language sources for K-Multimedia Player

This article K-Multimedia Player looks like it may be important to Korean computer users. It currently lacks the requirements of the Wikipedia:Notability guideline and needs multiple references from mainstream reliable sources. Those sources might exist in Korean language news sources. About Kim Yoon-ok

The Japanese Wikipedia page makes mention to a quote by Mrs. Kim made during Lee Myung-bak's mayoral campaign in Seoul. In response to a rumor that her husband had an illegitimate child, she responded to media questions by saying (something along the lines of) "If that's so, then go get [him] so [he] can help with the campaign." (the word 隠し子 is gender-neutral, so it isn't necessarily [he]." I can't seem to find a good source with this quote, but I think it's an interesting bit to have on the page if it's true (personally, I enjoy seeing these kinds of quotes from people). A Google search of 金潤玉 and 隠し子 brings up a number of pages with variations on the quote (all in Japanese), but I can't find a good primary source.

Unfortunately, I don't have the time to be on Wikipedia often anymore, so I thought I'd bring it up here in case someone here had the time and maybe knows enough Korean to run a Korean language search. Maybe something might come up in a mainstream news article in Korean, or maybe the quote is made up (the Japanese page has no reference for it).

Need imput on Dabang

It's a mess. Apparently created in retaliation from those who "have felt the flack from Koreans about how we as english teachers are all corrupt."[2] The sources are really bad. Now the page creator Mugamalanga and his various ip and accounts [3][4][5][6][7](probably more - their edits are limited to the same articles relating to New Zealand and ESL teaching) insists that his |personal experience (or just flat-out secondhand experience gathered from blogs) are somehow credible enough to contend with actual fact.

Just a badly written article. The state that it's in right now, I would propose a deletion. I would try to rewrite it according to the Korean wiki page (if the idea is even notable at all), but Mugamalanga is prone to edit warring with proxies and I just don't have the time for it right now. I would appreciate it if someone would review the page.

Looking for Help

Does anyone know how to write ㅼㅏ without having it two different spaces? I am doing research on pre-1930s Korean magazines and I'm trying to write things like ㅼㅏ님 (modern: 따님) on my word processor... Thanks for your help Konamaiki (talk) 22:59, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

One way is to manually use Unicode's individual (i.e. decomposed) combining characters; see section 3.12 in the Unicode spec. Basically you'll have to bring up a character map and hunt for each letter you need individually (first from the "choseong" block, then from the "jungseong" block, then from the "jongseong" block). Something like U+112F + U+1161. But at least for me it doesn't quite look right: ᄯᅡ ... cab (talk) 01:17, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Economy of South Korea

Hey can someone give me a hand with this article. I'll admit I was edit warring for a bit but now I've stopped. I know its a no no around here. Anyways the problem is that as it currently stands, the introduction is horribly biased, and there's a ridiculous amount of irrelevant images. Additional hanja to the top of Infobox settlement

Although I left a message to User talk:ASDFGH#Hanja in regards to ASDFGH (talk · contribs)'s insertion of additional hanja to {{Infobox settlement}} on Korean geography-related articles, I think any available input would be appreciated since he already made such edits to many articles. I don't doubt that his such edits are from good faith, but hanja is already addressed in such infobox, and only used as a supplement in Korean writing system. I believe the addition is also not a convention for Korean geography related articles. If this needs a discussion, please discuss the matter here.--Caspian blue 03:21, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

I made your comment collapsed with the template since it is too long and duplicated. You don't need to post the duplicated material here, linking "diff" or directing the page would be more than enough. Moreover, the excessive bold paragraphs rather distract editors to read or to understand what you're trying to say. None would bother to read such WP:TLDR writing in bold and capital letter which also are considered WP:UNCIVIL. Not to mention, it is worrying that your attempt to block your opponents with the bogus accusations[8][9] out of grudge to WP:AIV is disruptive. Sennen goroshi's anti-Korean editings

SeoulPodcast notability question

A user has raised a question about the SeoulPodcast w/u notability. Please see the discussion here for your thoughts on the issue. In sum:

The podcast has received coverage in two major Korean dailies and Korean broadcast tv. The podcast was sponsored by another Korean major daily. It was also mentioned by a US paper about the death of Michael White. These links are found within the w/u reference/see also sections. Crossmr contends SP's mentions are not the focus of the articles and the host has written for two of the sources and is friends with one of the reporters so he questions their independence. I counter argue any long time resident and notable writer in Korea is going to have op ed pieces published in all three of Korea's english dailies and will naturally be friends with many in the expat journalist community. That doesn't imply, however, the host of the SP has power over editorial coverage. Journalists do get legit story ideas from their friends. As well, the host is a jack of all trades who has about 3 major projects on the go so naturally there's not going to be deep coverage of one single project. In absolute terms, crossmr is probably right the coverage of the SP is not deep. However, in relative terms, given Korean media's narrow focus, the coverage SP has got is about as significant as it comes. Mindme (talk) 14:53, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

When was the women of Korea unveiled?

I have been told that women in old Korea, especially upper-class women, lived confided to their homes and was forced to cover themselwes with a veil if they left the house during the day. When did this end? And how? I have the impression that this was still the case in 1905, but not in 1945, is this correct? When could Korean upper-class women show themselwes on the streets of Seul without a veil? I have read a poem by a Korean woman, who describes how she is allowed out of the home for the first time: this was from 1920. As upper-class women of old Korea was expected to live in seclusion, how was the role of women at court? Was the queens, the royal women and their lady-in-waitings excepted from seclusion, or were they also prevented from having contanct with men? Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 35,715 as of May 1. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Need help with History of Korea

Please read History of Korea#User:Kuebie's repeated reverting. A user named Kuebie, who never admits any information unfacourable to Korea, has been trying to remove the information below.

"As a result of this war (Sino-Japanese war), China, which had had an enormous influence on Korea for centuries, was forced to recognize the full and complete independence and autonomy of Korea."

There is no doubt that Joseon had been one of the tributaries of Qing Dynasty. Japan tried to cut the tributary relationship between the two countries and that was the aim of the first Sino-Japanese war. The Treaty of Shimonoseki, which was concluded between China and Japan in 1895 after the war, says "China recognizes definitively the full and complete independence and autonomy of Korea, and, in consequence, the payment of tribute and the performance of ceremonies and formalities by Korea to China, that are in derogation of such independence and autonomy, shall wholly cease for the future." Althought this treaty was the first step of Japan's ruling Korea, the Koreans at that time regarded the end of the tributary relationship as their independence from China and built the Independence Gate. But for this treaty, the tributary relationship would have continued and Japan would not have ruled Korea. This treat has a lot to do with history of Korea. Kuebie, however, never want to admit this fact and it is not possible to talk to him because he never even tries to understand what I say.

I am not saying Japan made Korea independent from China for the people of Korea. Japan only did so in order to hold the control of the peninsula. But Kuebie claims Korea had been an independent country and the Treaty has nothing to do with it. It is impossible to solve this argument between only him and me. Calligraphy: Request for article creation (stub or more)

Hello, I come to request the creation of Korean Calligraphy. This subject need a specific article, at least a stub. Korean calligraphy have its own masters and famous pieces, and its own focus on Hangul. Hangul request specific techniques, as circle, that East Asian Calligraphy doesn't need. Currently, just one sentence on East_Asian_calligraphy#Japanese_and_Korean_calligraphies. On wikipedia, I'm in charge of Chinese Calligraphy, but I'm neither familiar with Korean calligraphy, neither korean language. Accordingly, I just work on Chinese calligraphy side. For Korean calligraphy your help : research of sources, reading, writing, is really welcome. You can get some idea of outline on Chinese calligraphy & Japanese calligraphy. Italics in citation templates

If you use {{citation}} or similar templates for citing sources, you may find {{asiantitle}} useful. You use it inside the "title" or "journal" parameter of the citation template so that the title of the work will be underlined, rather than set in oblique type (which makes hanja/hangul/etc. hard to read). Historical context needed...

Right now I'm trying to add a Korean names to the article Third Battle of Seoul and I'm bit confused. 1·4 후퇴 literally means "January-Fourth Retreat" during the Korean War, but what is the exact scope of this retreat in Korean military history? From my own understanding after consulting Paik Sun-yup's memoir and ROK military's official history, the "January-Fourth Retreat" could be as large as the entire Chinese intervention from October 1950 to February 1951, or as small as the Seoul battle between January 1 to 5 in 1951, and anything in between. Major proposed overhaul of Sea of Japan naming dispute

The article Sea of Japan naming dispute has been under full protection for about 1 month due to an edit war that occurred in August. Discussion on the talk page stalled at the end of August, and there are not many active participants on that page. Since that time, I have been working on a wholly new draft to fix, as best as I could, many of the numerous problems on the article. Since this article falls within the purview of this Wikiproject, I am inviting members to come participate in the discussion on the talk page at Sea of Japan naming dispute#Major overhaul, which explains the current articles deficiencies (poor sources, disorganized, etc.) and what I have done to fix them. In that section you will find a link to the draft version in my user space. While this article and its subject are clearly a contentious matter, I sincerely believe that we can create a useful and NPOV article about the subject through the careful involvement of more editors. Korean Name Infobox

I have a discussion with User:YumeChaser about Korean Name Infobox's. Is there a rule or guideline that says Hangul/Hanja has to be in the Musical Artist Infobox? Yume says it's common practice but it isn't sensible to have the same name in the article, Korean Name Infobox and the Musical Artist Infobox. There's a difference between Hangul and Hanja. In the case of TVXQ, you were removing the Chinese from the infobox... on Japanese artist's, they include their kanji in the infobox (my example was Ayumi Hamasaki). I do not see why it should not be included as well, especially if the usage is common throughout other projects, let alone on Korean-related articles. The Korean name box displays the English romanization methods of Hangul, that's the reason why it exists. Oncamera I am afraid you are wrong. The primary Infobox was built to have 1 name not 2. The Korean name Infobox is built for such names that is why it has a place for Hangul, Hanja, Revised Romanization and etc. You really shouldn't have names in different languages in the primary Infobox. Ayumi Hamasaki doesn not have a Korean name Infobox because it is Japanese, but even with that it's not suppose to have Japanese characters in the primary Infobox as well but it works because the Japanese characters don't have a Korean name Infobox.

KITECH/urgent edit help needed

Some time ago, I created the KITECH article as a stub while editing the KTX article, because it seemed a fairly important research institute mentioned in many of my sources. However, it was beyond me to expand it, and no one else did, so it was now tagged for speedy deletion. FYI, List of political parties in North Korea was redirected without being merged, however, examining the AFD discussion Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of political parties in North Korea, I can't find a reason that supports such a closure. It seems like either a keep or a merge would be the appropriate outcome. In any event, it seems clear that atleast an AFD merge should occur.

Hello. While creating the french article on Hwang Jang-yop, I've been left wondering why the links on Hwang Jang-Yop where all red before noticing the upper case Y in his last name. Alliance of Valiant Arms

The page Alliance of Valiant Arms has been nominated for deletion (by me) because currently it contains not sources that pass WP:RS, and I can't find any evidence of notability in English searches. In the AfD discussion, another editor commented that it may help to check Korean pages (a Google search turns up about 600,000 hits), as the game appears to be popular in Korea; however, since neither I nor the other editor can read Korean, we can't tell if the results we're getting are reliable sources, or if they're just press releases and/or self-published sources. If anyone has the inclination, please help look for reliable sources in Korean so that we can determine if this game meets the notability guidelines (either WP:GNG or WP:WEB). "First/Second etc Republic of South Korea"

As the country is called ROK, it should be 1st Republic of Korea etc, shouldn't it. There are a lot of ROSKs all over the place. In Vietnamese, it is "Đệ nhất Cộng hòa Việt Nam" First Republic of Vietnam. Nobody calls it 1st Rep of SV (Rep of SV is wrong) and obviously not the informal "1st SV/SK" etc YellowMonkey (new photo poll) 01:30, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

The name of the country should be the Republic of Korea or South Korea. However, there are some articles like Second Republic of South Korea, where I think the historical terms First Republic, Second Republic, etc. are being used together with the descriptive phrase "of South Korea." In other words, these would not be names of the country or official titles, but historical terms for particular eras in the government of South Korea. Are these the articles you have in mind? As I understand it, "First Republic" itself has no official standing (with respect to South Korea), it's just a historical term. And "of South Korea" is a descriptive phrase to distinguish it from other countries' first republics. So it's not First (Republic of South Korea) so much as (First Republic) of (South Korea). A user had requested to move the title of Jessica_(entertainer) to Jessica Jung. Since the sensitive subject is about first name vs. full name, your attention to the subject is appreciated for neutrality's sake. What is the name most commonly used in English sources? If there is an established usage of "Jessica Jung" as her common name in English, then that's what should be used. But if English sources mostly use "Jessica" only, then the first option should be used. It doesn't really matter how Korean sources refer to her as this is the English Wikipedia, unless there are not reliable sources in English. Actually it says "Articles are normally titled using the name which is most commonly used to refer to the subject of the article in English-language reliable sources. This includes usage in the sources used as references for the article." Normally' doesn't mean all the time. She is known as Jessica Jung in some articles not many.

No, "normally" in that context means that the name commonly used in English sources is the one that should be used in the title unless there is a good reason not to use the common name, such as it being ambiguous or inaccurate (see the Tsunami example), if it goes against some of the other policies/guidelines (such as MOS:TM) or if there is a consensus that determines to use another variant.
In this case Jessica_(entertainer) actually falls in the problem or being ambiguous and inaccurate despite being the most commonly used form in English sources. The reason for this is that Jessica is a common name used by many other entertainers in the English world, therefore the title is misleading. Jessica Jung on the other hand, while not widely used, it's more accurate and less misleading because there is only one known entertainer that uses that name, so it is a good alternative for the article title. Without knowing much of the particulars of this case, I would suggest that, if "Jessica" is truly the more commonly used name and "Jessica Jung" is not truly used in reliable English sources, the article title should be "Jessica (South Korean entertainer)". That leaves out the ambiguity of the other title without relaying on forcing the Jung part. Jfgslo (talk) 17:21, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

The forecast was wrong or exaggerated on purpose." Is this anywhere near correct? In particular, the prime minister was not talking about a political failure, was he?
