Discussion and suggestions for specific articles

I've been on Wikibreak for past month or so and I'm attempting reinvigoration of my Wikipedia contributions; particularly I would like to get this project which now has a few participants off the ground. Yesterday I added some general updates to the main page in regards to goals of the project which obviously you may alter as you please. The specific goals I added were limited despite my feeling that more may be added which also required remediation and watchlisting by all participants. I would like to reccommend the following articles been watchlisted and in some cases cleaned up and/or expanded upon:

  • Ibrahim Babangida; this article is labelled as POV and complaints have been registered on a number of occassions.
  • Atiku Abubakar; this article is simply a mess, particularly as a result of recent events surrounding the Vice President's apparent defection.
  • The articles on the three most populous ethnic groups are subject to fairly constant misinformation; Hausa people (or Hausa-Fulani), Igbo people, and Yoruba people are all in need of attention.

Article for deletion: Gnaa, Nigeria

FYI, the article Gnaa, Nigeria has just entered its 3rd AfD. There's been considerable debate in the past as to:

  1. Does such a place even exist?
  2. If a place does exist with that name, is it notable?
  3. Is this all a hoax perpetrated by the other GNAA, the Gay Niggers Association of America; they issue press releases datelined Gnaa, Nigeria.

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. List of cities in Nigeria

The page entitled "List of cities in Nigeria" has a link to the city of Shaki. However, clicking on this link takes you to Shaki, Azerbaijan not Shaki, Nigeria! The ranking of the cities is misleading and needs to be adjusted. For instance, Iseyin was rated as No 26 with population of 280000 whereas the actual population of Iseyin based on 2006 census is 255,619. On the other hand, Saki was rated No 56 with 150000 population. This is contrary to the result of 2006 population census wherein Saki was put at 278,002.

Missing articles for places in Nigeria with populations > 100,000

The Wikipedia:Missing articles for towns and cities with 100,000 or more inhabitants project has identified a list of places in Nigeria which appear to have current populations of more than 100,000 and do not have articles in the English-language Wikipedia.

They are:

(Caveat: since this list was compiled by computer without any local knowledge of Nigeria, some of these names may be wrong, or alternative names for places with articles which already exist.)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Category:Universities and colleges in Nigeria

The recent splitting of this category into a whole set of categories on a State basis, such as Category:Universities and colleges in Kano State is a bad idea as they are mostly occupied by only a single university. Geology and archaelogy

Hello, not sure if I am doing this right, but one of the things I would like to see is detailed GEOLOGY & ARCHAEOLOGY of Nigeria. For example, BOMPAI ROCK in Kano, we used to play on as children. It is a huge granite(?) monolith(?) out of nowhere. When I was a child, we were told that it was ejecta from a megavolcano where the Jos Plateau is now. I have never been able to find any scientific work on this. We have amazing features like this in Nigera. Another one is the man-made mud (?) hill near the old city which it was said was built by a king to hunt elephants (so he could be above them). I have no idea if this has ever been excavated. In the south we have the tombs that contained the igbo-ukwu bronzes and so on. I have collated some documents on that (old now) and wonder if there is anyone out there that has more information? --Dr T Hunt 10:28, 12 July 2007 from UK

Needs merging

User:Picaroon/Electoral Reform Panel

I was going to create an article on the Electoral Reform Panel, a committee created by Yar'Adua to look into electoral reform. But, I can't find out who the 22nd member is. 21 were originally appointed, with the 22nd to be added shortly, according to Thisday. Opinion Request: Advance Fee Fraud Entry on Nigeria pages

Hi all, I have been debating with another editor on the following issues:

  1. Do crime references belong on a city/country page?
  2. Is Advance fee fraud significant enough to mention on the Nigeria page?
  3. Is Advance fee fraud significant enough of an economic issue to discuss it under the Economy section?

Question about Victoria Island

Does anyone know if Victoria Island is currently actually an island? I've been asked on my talk page, and while one of the maps I've found shows a separation between it and Eti Osa, other do not. User talk:Picaroon#Victoria Island (Nigeria) is the location of the question (it will be User talk:Picaroon/Archive 6#Victoria Island (Nigeria) when archived). Thanks. Victoria Island is/was an Island. It was orignally separated from the Lekki Peninsula by swamps which were filled in by the colonial government. This activity continued under successive state governments, so that there is a significant land bridge between Victoria Island and Lekki Peninsula. This area was referred to as Victoria Island Annex and Maroko. Much of the Maroko area is now referred to as "Oniru Estate" after the Oniru ruling family. Article sounds notable to me. It's as notable as McDonalds should be to Americans. Maybe some additional citation can be found (e.g., a list of fast food companies) to keep the deletionists at bay. Wxidea (talk) 03:53, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Category for Traditional Rulers and Chiefs

I've been working on some articles about Yoruba chieftaincies, such as Ota Traditional Chiefs, that talks about the various major chiefs of Ota, Nigeria and how they're selected. The question is - how should this be classified? I see there's a category for Nigerian Royalty, but it seems to me that this might only include kingdom-wide rulers such as the Alaafin of Oyo. Repeated vandalism from user Ifyakinsola

I've seen this user making many edits, primarily to things having to do with Nigeria, to promote "Yorubeat" music and their favorite artist. I'm not into wiki politics, but I think it would be appropriate for someone to take a look at their edits and consider whatever sort of action needs to be taken to stop this from going on. Deletion or alternatives for unverifiable biased article?

2005 killings of Christians in Nigeria is very biased. In attempting to rewrite the article to be less biased, I was unable to find any articles from mainstream news sources (BBC, AllAfrica) that mention any fighting at all in Adamawa in 2005. The article includes two external links to Christian sites that tell the story in a very biased fashion. Google only turns up stories about the fighting on other Christian sites, and the all seem to cite one report (the one at the persecution.org link). I'm beginning to question whether this event really happened or not, and even if it did, the lack of any coverage at all in non-Christian media prevents the article from being written in a non-biased fashion. Note- I did find references to riots in 2004 and 2003 where Christians rioted and burned down three mosques. But *nothing* in 2005. I think this article may be a candidate for deletion, but I'm open to suggestions as to other ways to improve it. Rjhatl (talk) 21:41, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Proposal to consolidate African country WikiProject banners

Template:AfricaProject was recently modified, and now contains individual parameters for all countries in Africa (see usage notes). Since project-specific assessment for all African countries can now be accomplished through the template, a proposal has been made at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Africa to consolidate all individual African country WikiProject banners.

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Articles on Nigerian towns

I came across Oraukwu, Nigeria, which appears to have large sections cut-and-paste from Abagana which have been altered only slightly. Clearly, something isn't right with that article, but Abagana itself needs some work. I thought I would bring it here for attention rather than cut it down to a stub. Thanks. You're right, much of it is copied from Abagana. Maybe the two towns are related somehow? They're both in Anambra State. I can't find any more information about either town, though. --Ships at a Distance (talk) 21:28, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). Truce term

Hi. I'm writing an article on truce terms and would like to know what Nigerian children use. Truce terms are words used by children, usually under the age of about 11, to call a temporary halt or respite to the game to do something like tie a shoelace or discuss the rules or take off a jacket. List of Obafemi Awolowo University Halls of residence

I started the aforementioned article a couple of days ago. Painstakingly, i had to make extensive research inorder to make this artcile in concern a 'Neutral and Generally' accepted piece of information.However,to my uttermost surprise,someone suggested that the article be merged into the School's page on Wikipedia. Why Nigerian articles cant stand on their own (regardless of their size) remain an obfuscating fact to me. I was forced to start such article on this school when i noticed that the [[Massachusetts Institute of Technology posses a whole page for its dormitories alone. I am suggesting that Nigerian articles be treated with fairness and eqaulity as any other article(s) on Wikipedia. Unbiased views should be exhibited flagrantly through our works. I'll like to know why PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION, have not resume since after the strike was called off. this is really not good after staying at homE since the begnining of the year,now they are not saying anything about our resumtion.The dept is always the last in everything in the school activity,pls if they cant run the programe,then they should stopt admiting student.

I have added templates to the talk page. Based on a quick scan, I agree with the importance rating. I put a "start class" quality rating, mostly because of the lack of citations. My preference is to show the source for each paragraph, or for each sentence if there are multiple sources. But avoid content where there is no reliable source online or in print. I will make some edits so you can see a way to format the citations better, and how to use one citation in multiple places. "accessdate" is important for online sources: they have a habit of disappearing over time, but will still exist in archives somewhere. Another thing to think about is establishing links from other articles. At present, this is an orphan, which means users are unlikely to find it when just browsing, only when they are specifically looking for it. Good work. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:44, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

I edited the article, Nigerian Second Republic, by adding another subtitle: "Political Activism in the Second Republic". I gave the reason for my edit thus: Nigeria's political progress has always been defined by political activism in all three Republics, hence the need to include this heading. Renaming proposal for LGAs

In order to readily distinguish local government areas from settled places, I propose renaming all of the local government areas as "Foo Local Government Area" as Aba North Local Government Area and Eleme Local Government Area were formerly named. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

Calabar Kingdom

I just did a clean-up. It seems that an editor dreamed of an ancient Calabar Kingdom, maybe 4,000 years old, that stretched around the Gulf of Guinea, included the Garden of Eden and was inhabited by Jewish people writing in the Nsibidi script. As far as I can tell, the Efik state of Akwa Akpa was established only in the late 18th century, and got the name "Calabar" from some European cartographer's mistake. I fixed the articles to match the sources I could find. Am I wrong? If there are sources for an earlier state, the content can be fixed. Aymatth2 (talk) 02:05, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

It appears to be an article about Nigerian royalty but I don't understand enough of the context to know where to look for sources or to understand it exactly. Princess Stella Oduah-Ogiemwonyi naming issue

Hey, I recently rescued the article on Princess Stella Oduah-Ogiemwonyi from AfD; she was just appointed Minister of Aviation for Nigeria. Anyway, we're having some discussion of properly naming the article--some sources include the "Princess" in her name, while other do not. Does anyone here know if Princess is her given name or a title? And should the article be located at Princess Stella Oduah-Ogiemwonyi (as it is presently) or Stella Oduah-Ogiemwonyi (currently a redirect)? Thanks! Meelar (talk) 04:50, 11 July 2011 (UTC)
