Dome[edit]

What a beautiful old building. I would love to see it someday. But what about this "dome" described in the text? The image of the model shown at the bottom of the page shows a cone-shaped spire on top of the building. That's not a "dome". A dome is generally hemispherical; a pointed roof like that qualifies as a "spire", albeit a short one. Is it possible that the creator of the model was mistaken? I always thought that eastern architecture preferred hemispherical domes, and such a dome would match the rounded tops of the arches in the wall. The rounded arches and pointed spires just look odd together. I could see a later architect putting up such a pointed spire if the original dome collapsed or was never completed, but it's hard to imagine that that is what the building was supposed to look like originally.   • Oppose – Hundreds of articles on cathedrals are named "Cathedral of X". The form "X Cathedral" appears to be mostly used for major cathedrals, which Ani isn't (although it does look charming). — JFG talk 09:25, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Cathedral of Aveiro, Cathedral of Trier, Cathedral of Faro, Cathedral of Veracruz, Cathedral of Córdoba, etc. In fairness, there are also hundreds of articles titled "X Cathedral" so the Wikipedia community doesn't seem to feel strongly one way or the other. Are there more sources naming this one "Ani Cathedral" vs. "Cathedral of Ani"? The historical book search favors "Cathedral of Ani". — JFG talk 08:43, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Quarry explosions[edit]

In September Tiptoethrutheminefield removed—without discussing—an entire section titled Quarry explosions by dismissing it as "propaganda" and claiming that "source says no such thing". The paragraph contained 4 sources (mostly Turkish) which talk about expositions on the Armenian side. The Los Angeles Times article by Amberin Zaman (a journalist friendly to Armenians) is alone sufficient. Even if it is Turkish propaganda, it is notable. Armenian officials have offered rebuttals. I've now added an Armenian source, from the architecture historian Samvel Karapetyan who witnessed the explosion and its effect on Ani himself. --Երևանցի talk 14:17, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That is the problem with Wikipedia and sources containing blatant lies. Unlike Amberin Zaman, and unlike you, I was at Ani that day forthat event - and there were no quarry explosions at all that day. And explosions from the dozen or so quarries on the Armenian side continue to this day. This GA article is full of lies regarding the condition of the cathedral - unfortunately there are many people and groups who want to enrich their pockets or political goals by being involved in as expensive and heavy-handed a "restoration" as possible.
