Requested move 19 April 2022[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: This page is MOVED as proposed. There was no consensus to move the film, given small details vs primary topic. A later move request specifically on the film might be more successful. Anyway, there's no reason at all to not move the dab page. (non-admin closure) Red Slash 19:03, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

– By overwhelming long term significance the primary topic - including WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT - for the death of Stalin is the article on the death of Stalin. Note that this is consistent with other articles on similar deaths, such as the Death of Hitler, the Death of Mussolini, and the Death of Churchill. Once moved, these articles would be replaced with redirects to Death and state funeral of Joseph Stalin. BilledMammal (talk) 13:18, 19 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • support both per nom—blindlynx 14:06, 19 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support 1st, oppose 2nd. For the film, the (not-so) WP:SMALLDETAILS of capitalized "Death" and the presence of "The" are enough to distinguish the two topics. As a distant second choice, I would at least prefer redirecting The Death of Stalin to the dab page over making it a primary redirect, where it's likely to collect mistargeted links. • Struck my support for the first move after seeing the clickstream data linked below by Uanfala, which was very surprising to me. Obviously Death and state funeral of Joseph Stalin has much more long-term significance than the 2017 film, but given that usage points in the opposite direction, I'm starting to think the status quo of no primary topic is the right call. • Support: though the film article gets more usage, I agree that there's a drastic enough discrepancy in long-term significance that the death/funeral page is the primary. As a slight aside, I'd support a hatnote redirecting to both the book and film articles as opposed to the dab page. Something like "For the graphic novel or its film adaptation, see La Mort de Staline and The Death of Stalin (film). This is the "can fit on one line" case of Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Primary topic with two or more other topics. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 16:06, 19 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    • Call me neutral on part 2 of the proposal. Colin M's SMALLDETAILS point is a good one. If Death of Stalin is a redirect to Death/funeral, my gut says tacking on a "The" is too small a small detail, but the examples at the policy page are even smaller. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 16:15, 19 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Usage data for March: 72% for the film vs. 24% for the article about Stalins's death [1]. – Uanfala (talk) 16:43, 19 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. I'd also argue that La Mort de StalineThe Death of Stalin (comics), per WP:NCBOOKS and WP:UE. 162 etc. (talk) 17:37, 19 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral 1st, Oppose 2nd per Colin M and Firefangledfeathers. I don't think it's plausible someone would type "The Death" in capitals expecting something other than the film (The death of Stalin doesn't seem to exist, but that would probably be a different case if it did). 162 etc's point about the graphic novel title is fair, though. • Oppose both The disambiguation page should be redirected to Death and state funeral of Joseph Stalin and that is all there is to it. WP:DIFFCAPS means that The Death of Stalin is different than The death of Stalin and should stay where it is. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 11:50, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    • Do you mean support the first, oppose the second, as the first is proposing that the disambiguation page is redirected to Death and state funeral of Joseph Stalin? BilledMammal (talk) 11:54, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No, I also oppose a move of the disambiguation page. The disambiguation page should be converted into a redirect, not moved - it should simply not exist, as both disambiguated articles can easily fit in a hatnote.
Death of Stalin redirects here. For the comic, see La Mort de Staline. For the film, see The Death of Stalin.ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 11:56, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support 1, somewhat. I agree with User:Zxcvbnm, that the page doesn't seem that necessary. If you arrive on Death of Joseph Stalin or whatever the page is called, the only other topic is the movie (and the comic). So you won't really have any reason to go to the DAB page. Oppose 2. Come on, who is typing in "The Death of Stalin" for anything but the movie? Probably nobody, that's just not how formatting works. There is not a The Death of Hitler redirecting to his suicide, although there is a The Death of Adolf Hitler about a book. --Quiz shows 22:52, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support both per nom. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:37, 21 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support first, oppose second. Death of Stalin should be a redirect to either Death and state funeral of Joseph Stalin (the actual death of Stalin) or The Death of Stalin (the movie based on the book based on the actual death). JIP | Talk 01:11, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
