Hello

I noticed your edit to Forging and is something I don't have the English to ever catch anything like that. In fact I most likely make those mistakes myself. Feel free to critique my edits if you notice something like that. I went to college and was good enough to test out of English. But I'm guessing you are light years ahead of me. I wasn't going to say anything until I read Intellectual property and figured I'd let you know I'm using that. Thanks. --Dana60Cummins (talk) 17:00, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Image size reduction

Hi there. You recently tagged a file with {{non-free reduce}} or {{reduce}} that was, in fact, within acceptable size for fair use images. Standard practice places the maximum size at 160,000 pixels, which is 400x400 in a square image. However, 500x320, 600x266, etc. are also 160,000 pixels, and are acceptable. DASHbot, the program that does almost all image resizing, actually won't even bother with files that come out to less than 160,000 pixels, so chances are low that the files will ever be reduced anyways. If you really want a file smaller than 160,000 pixels reduced, you can do it easily with the free program Paint.NET (what I use), or ask me directly.

Just letting you know for the future, Sven Manguard Wha? 13:47, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. I assume, by going through my recent contributions, that this refers to File:Streetcar Logo.jpg. Its current size (739 × 191 pixels) seems pretty big to me—I can't see why we would ever need a non-free logo of that size in a Wikipedia article—but it does indeed have fewer than 160,000 pixels. —Bkell (talk) 13:52, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

dashbot

Resolved

I thought that Dashbot will reduce images if ONE side of the image is "bigger" than 300px --> so it would indeed change File:Dhgate logo.PNG. Or do I misunderstand something? mabdul 15:02, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Citing magazine articles to Wikipedia entries

Hello Bleth, how are you? I have some things I want to ask, share, and discuss with you and will do so when I have the time. For now, I would like to know, how do you cite magazine articles to Wikipedia entries? Please let me know - thank you. Mavericker (talk) 01:53, 17 September 2011 (UTC))

See Wikipedia:Citing sources for information about citing references, including magazines, in Wikipedia articles. The specific citation tag for magazines seems to be {{Cite journal}}; see Template:Cite journal for documentation about that template. —Bkell (talk) 01:55, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Possibly_unfree_files/2011_September_17#File:Thomasgraeme.jpg

Thanks for all your work on image licenses. I found the source for File:Thomasgraeme.jpg and found on the Graeme Park official Flickr page that the painting is thought to be by Robert Feke, who dies in 1750 (so it is PD-art). Accordingly I have moved the image to Commons and deleted it here. I did not close the PUF entry though as I figured it was better to touch base with you. Copyright of building picture

Hi Bkell!

In France there is a threshold of originality. If the building design is original enough, the architect has a copyright over any photos taken of the building. The photographer does too. I treated it as a non-free image as I assume the building design is original enough.

In the image File:ContinentalSquare.JPG it seems like I forgot to mention my own copyright. I usually release photos as public domain, so I have the photographer copyright be PD.

Now, if you feel the resolution of the image needs to be lowered, what size do you suggest?

Thanks WhisperToMe (talk) 21:04, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Well, DASHBot shrinks non-free images that are above 160,000 pixels (i.e., 400 × 400 pixels, or 500 × 320 pixels, or whatever). If this image were resized to that threshold, it would be 462 × 347 pixels: see here. I would think that size would be sufficient for its use in a Wikipedia article, right? —Bkell (talk) 00:41, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
Looks fine to me :) WhisperToMe (talk) 04:19, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
Okay, I'll tag it to be resized the next time DASHBot runs. It would still be nice if you could clarify on the file description page that you release any copyright that you yourself hold in the photo.Bkell (talk) 06:26, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
Oh, sorry, I didn't notice that you had already done that. Thanks. —Bkell (talk) 06:27, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Stephmcmahon.jpg?

First of all let me start off by saying don't you ever in your natural born life, take it upon yourself to make changes to articles that I have edited. The purpose being that I am a legitimate business person unlike yourself. You must have my authorization before acting on a serious matter as deleting my hard work.

I myself did not notice the description page that you said,"specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use". And IF its use in Wikipedia articles fails Wikipedia's first non-free content criterion then I will have demand that you show me where this information is located.Other than that stay out of my way! :-)K.M.D1994 (talk) 12:41, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

My intention is not to simply edit the article. I'm completely rewriting it. Such a thing requires time (especially with the new bibliography I'm using), so I like to use my userspace as a workshop so to speak. When it is finished, I'm going to cut it onto the main article.Mariomassone (talk) 20:55, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

The image is reduced

I noticed you added a non-free tag to File:Lands of lore panels.png based on the premise that a reduced size image (to 33% of prior) needs to be reduced in size. I am unclear about why you added this. Regards, RJH (talk)

I tagged it based on the fact that DASHBot resizes non-free images that are above a threshold of 400 × 400 pixels; this image, at 638 × 401 pixels, is 60% larger than that threshold. In the Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos article, the image is being displayed at a resolution of 250 × 157 pixels, so the current resolution of the image is 552% larger than its use in a Wikipedia article. Do you have a rationale to explain why we need this image at a resolution over six times as large as we actually use it? —Bkell (talk) 17:43, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi - when I scanned this image, I picked a reasonably low resolution (much lower than usual scanning resolution) and it would appear to meet the rule-of-thumb given in WP:NONFREE - As a general rule of thumb, images where one dimension exceeds 1,000 pixels, or where the image size approaches 1.0 megapixels or more, will likely require a closer review to assure that the image needs that level of resolution. What resolution would you consider acceptable for a magazine cover image? Regards, Letdorf (talk) 19:51, 27 September 2011 (UTC).

DASHBot resizes non-free images that are greater than 400 × 400 pixels. Resizing this image (currently 605 × 775 pixels, 193% larger than DASHBot's maximum) to this 160,000-pixel threshold would make it 353 × 452 pixels. That is over two and a half times as large as its use in the Dr. Dobb's Journal article (currently 220 × 282 pixels), so I see no reason that we need it to be any larger than what DASHBot would give. —Bkell (talk) 20:37, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
Hmmm... so which WP guidelines does DASHBot base its criteria on? I don't mind resizing the image, but I'd like to understand if we have some coherent policy about non-free image resolution. Regards, Letdorf (talk) 18:16, 28 September 2011 (UTC).
Well, WP:NONFREE, which you quoted, says:
Ideally, most common image uses can likely be represented in an image containing no more than 0.1 megapixels (obtained by multiplying the horizontal and vertical pixel count in an image). This allows, for example, images with 4:3 aspect ratios, to be show at 320 x 240 pixels, generally good for screenshots from television, movies, and video games, while allowing for the cover art for most published works to be shown at 250 x 400 pixels.
DASHBot's threshold is 0.16 megapixels, which is 60% larger than this recommendation. You might also be interested in reading Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/DASHBot 9 for discussion about the approval of this task of DASHBot. —Bkell (talk) 18:23, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

Where to discuss and share a list of resources

Hi. I have a list of resources I want to share that I would like to use to help contribute to a Wikipedia article. Should I post them here or go to the talk page of the article I want to contribute to and post them there or do both? Please let me know - thank you.Mavericker (talk) 14:38, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

What kind of resources do you mean? —Bkell (talk) 14:41, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

A list of resources to help verify or prove something in an article. Material to prove or verify something that wasn't already stated in the article. Mavericker (talk) 14:45, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

I would like to tell you what the article is and what the resources are for, but I will do that at a later time. Mavericker (talk) 14:54, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

If you mean citations or references to reliable sources, feel free to be bold and just add them to the article. Please read Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources and Wikipedia:Citing sources. You can also discuss them on the talk page of the article if you want. But please do not upload a file to use as a source for a claim—just cite the source. I am suspicious about your secrecy and unwillingness to explain what you want to do. —Bkell (talk) 14:55, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
Also, please consider using the preview button when making edits (especially on talk pages). While I was trying to post a reply above, I ran into edit conflicts three or four times because you kept editing to make minor changes to your comment. This is frustrating. —Bkell (talk) 14:57, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Forgive me - I am not trying to be secretive or rouse your suspicions. I want to share this list of materials with you and tell you what it is for before I go and share them on the talk page of the article. I am busy and in the middle of something. I will get back to to you and tell what what I want to do later. Mavericker (talk) 15:14, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Elmer Fudd in Roger Rabbit

Hi Bkell. I didn't want to address this until I had time to. I was digging around, looking for original sources that verify Elmer Fudd's appearance in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I don't have a copy of the Encyclopedia of Walt Disney's Animated Characters, and I couldn't find any excerpts of that book online that feature the Who Framed Roger Rabbit entry with the list of characters who appearred in it as a verifiable source-if I could I would make copies of that entry and upload it or link to it and list that as a source.

I found two websites that verify Elmer Fudd's appearance in Who Framed Roger Rabbit:

http://afrankangle.wordpress.com/2010/04/10/on-elmer-fudd/

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:ch3zCQ8wtWcJ:forums.goldenagecartoons.com/archive/index.php/t-11670.html+elmer+fudd+appearance+roger+rabbit&cd=60&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&source=www.google.com

I listed the cached file so you can see the highlighted terms- the person on here describes in detail where and when Elmer Fudd shows up towards the end of the film.

http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_cameos_in_Who_Framed_Roger_Rabbit

This is an official Disney Wikia- it lists Elmer Fudd as a character who cameoed in Roger Rabbit.

http://looneytunes.wikia.com/wiki/Who_Framed_Roger_Rabbit

This is from an official Looney Tunes Wikia - it states Elmer Fudd appears in Roger Rabbit.

I just found this:

http://toolooney.blogspot.com/

A script for a scene in which Elmer Fudd was set to show up at Marvin Acme's funeral, but was left out of the film.

This link:

http://www.toonopedia.com/elmer.htm

Even mentions Elmer Fudd's appearance in the film. I don't get why if this link is on the bottom if the Elmer Fudd page, why they wouldn't let me mention his cameo in the movie on the article.

I just found a screenshot of the scene from the movie I tried to upload:

http://thumbnails.truveo.com/0023/F3/98/F398A43692057C106F06A9_Large.jpg

It is a much better resolution pic-you can clearly see that the character peering through the crowd in the background on the left side of the screenshot behind the clown and between the clown and the Singing Harp with the bald, bulbous head and hunter's cap IS Elmer Fudd.

I recall trying to upload a screenshot and part of the reason why it was deleted because:

1. It was from Youtube

2. It wasn't a good quality pic

3. I drew a circle around Emler Fudd's head on it

I know for a fact that the Encyclopedia of Walt Disney's Animated Characters, and Newsweek June 27, 1988 - WHO IS ROGER RABBIT? SPIELBERG AND DISNEY TAKE A $45 MILLION GAMBLE, VOLUME CXI, NO. 26

mentions Elmer Fudd's cameo in the movie. The Encyclopedia of Walt Disney's Animated Characters is a comprehensive guide to animated Disney films and officially lists all characters that appear in these films. If I can get a hold of the Disney Encyclopedia of Animated Characters and the Newsweek magazine I was talking about above I will cite the articles from both. I believe some other animation books also mention Elmer Fudd's appearance in the movie - if I can find those other animation books that mention Elmer Fudd's cameo in the movie I will post about it also.

I also found five more links to sites that mentioned Elmer Fudd appearing in the movie:

http://www.enotes.com/topic/Elmer_Fudd

http://new-savanna.blogspot.com/2010/05/hollywood-version-who-framed-roger.html

http://elmerfudd123.blogspot.com/

http://scoop.diamondgalleries.com/public/default.asp?t=1&m=1&c=34&s=264&ai=97224&arch=y&ssd=7/16/2010%2012:01:00%20PM

http://www.screened.com/who-framed-roger-rabbit/16-177345/

Are these sources that I have acceptable sources?

I don't own a DVD of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. If I were to make a screenshot from the DVD of Elmer Fudd in Roger Rabbit and showed a cropped portion of that image would that be an acceptible image to upload to the Elmer Fudd article? Or is that screenshot I found above acceptable? I also posted this on the Elmer Fudd talk page.

Please let me know. Thank you. Mavericker (talk) 22:57, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

what potato did you take the photo of Now 66 with?

Please answer — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.97.215.192 (talk) 16:55, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

I am not the original uploader of File:Now 66.jpg; that would be User:Ronaldo2006. He apparently got the image from Amazon.com. Perhaps you can send an e-mail to Amazon asking them about their potato preferences. —Bkell (talk) 21:40, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
  • So why didn't you upload a better quality image, you have the world wide web for gods sake, there is more than bloody amazon, theres play.com for example, potatoes are good food, but not good at capturing imagery — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.101.2.207 (talk) 11:31, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
