Speedy deletion nomination of Taham[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Taham requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Epeefleche (talk) 02:35, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for May 7[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Villaflores, Chiapas, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Villa Hidalgo, Chiapas (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Wiki Loves Pride 2014[edit]

Hi Carlos. In case you are not aware, there is an upcoming campaign to improve coverage of LGBT-related topics on Wikipedia, culminating with an international edit-a-thon on June 21. See Wiki Loves Pride 2014 for more information. If you are interested, you might consider creating a page for a major city (or cities!) near you, with a list of LGBT-related articles that need to be created or improved. This would be a tremendous help to Wikipedia and coverage of LGBT culture and history. Thanks for your consideration, and please let me know if you have any questions! --><span style="color:navy"Another Believer (Talk) 16:10, 9 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mexico[edit]

Thanks for going through the municipalities and adding population data. I created most of them a while back and a lot of them don't even have data yet. I see you haven't worked on Iran for weeks now, how far did you get? You've certainly earned a break from it! I do hope that you'll continue at some point of course. Mexico is an excellent choice anyway.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:34, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't give up Iran. You've come this far, it seems a shame to stop now. My worry on this was that you wouldn't complete the task and then in the future people will create them haphazardly and things will be inconsistent and a mess again.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:32, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Interwikis[edit]

Hi, I noticed that you added some Farsi interwikis - thank you. Did you know you can add these directly into wikidata, at least in the cases for which there is already a pencil icon at the foot of the menu bar on the left? This is more helpful still, as it works both ways. I think a bot will eventually migrate the links that you added anyway, but the option is there to do it now. – Fayenatic London 08:37, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Addition of interwiki links[edit]

You are receiving this as you have recently added an interwiki link to a page!

Wikidata has been deployed to the English Wikipedia. Wikidata manages interwiki links on a separate project on pages such as this. This means that on Wikipedia articles there is now a language bar on the left hand side of your screen where you can edit and add links rather than adding them into the articles themselves.

If you have any questions regarding Wikidata please use the talk page Wikipedia talk:Wikidata.

Navarrese deputies to Cortes Generales, 1879-1923[edit]

Hi there

I am here not to protest, as you seem to suggest on top of your talk page, I am here to ask for clarification.

BTW, hope you don’t mind if I note that I find your suggestion provocative, impolite and generally incompatible with the spirit of settling disputes in a friendly and conciliatory manner. If I might venture to submit a humble proposal, I would suggest to rephrase your statement, maybe as If I've deleted an article you created and you are here to investigate, please clearly state the name of the article in the header of your note on the bottom of my talkpage. Remember to sign your posts with etc etc.

I have the following questions:

a) You have deleted my entry with no flagging for deletion and with no discussion allowed, so I guess you applied a speedy deletion procedure, approaching this as a most obvious case. However, I can not find a “contest speedy deletion” button, which should normally be left inside the speedy deletion tag. If it was a speedy deletion indeed, how can I find the “contest” button? If it was not a speedy deletion, why there was no flagging and no discussion allowed?

b) The A1 tag description you quote says that this applies only to very short articles. The entry in question contained lots of data, namely a table with 140 cells. Does it count as short article?

c) The A1 tag description says that If any information in the title or on the page, including links, allows an editor, possibly with the aid of a web search, to find further information on the subject in an attempt to expand or edit it, there is enough context that A1 is not appropriate. My entry did contain an indication what the source is, and it also contained a link allowing an editor to find further info. Could you clarify please?

d) The entry is formatted as an annex. I found no information on any wiki policy or annexes (though maybe there is one I failed to find). I created this annex to avoid stuffing another of my articles with data; besides, maybe someone else would like to take advantage of this annex. Annex is usually a raw data piece, and there are many scattered across wiki with no context provided, the related one is for instance elecciones generales. Does the A1 tag applies to annexes as well?

Regards, Dd1495 (talk) 11:03, 17 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again,

Thanks for a prompt response. It has already occurred to me that I had to wait a month to get a response from wiki admins, so I appreciate your answering the following day very much.

Your response has left me puzzled, and it is for 3 reasons.

  • First, I am puzzled because I am not sure why, when replying to the note I have left on your talkpage, you wrote on my talkpage. The only reason I can think of is that you did this out of courtesy, so that it is easier for me to find it. If this is the case, I am very grateful. However, my impression is that splitting a discussion between two talkpages makes it very difficult to keep track of it, so for my convenience (hope you don't mind) I copy your response here: The article was no more than a transclusion of a file already on Wikipedia. the article added nothing by way of content. Articles need some content, not merely a picture already on the site. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 16:52, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
  • Second, I am puzzled because you answered the question which I did not ask, and you ignored 4 specific questions I did ask. You seem to answer the question “why did you delete my article”, which I did not spell out. I did not, because when deleting, you provided a justification already.
  • Third, I am puzzled because the justification for deletion you provided on my talkpage (“simple transclusion”) is different than your original justification (“no context”). What appears to be your inconsistency might create an impression (120% false, I am sure) that you simply wanted to delete the article does not matter the reason (I would hate to sound confrontational, this is by no means my intention and please accept my apologies if this is the case).

Anyway, since you left my previous request unanswered, I would be grateful if you could clarify points A, B, C and D raised before. I could now add also point E:

Indeed, the article was a transclusion of an image. Is it incompatible with the wiki policy? I thought transclusions are welcome and indeed recommended, instead of copying data from master source. I have created an image titled Deputies Navarre Restoration.JPG with the sole intention to place it as the only part of a wiki article, formatted as an annex. This image contains a table with structured data, a table that a standard wiki table technology can not produce (I think so?), with different colouring keys and patterns, so inserting an image is the only way I found to present the data the right way. Of course, following your deletion I can now add this picture in full-size to an article to which it was intended as an annex, but the disadvantage would be that the others, possibly willing to take advantage of the data only, would have to point to my article. Does this make sense?

friendly regards,--Dd1495 (talk) 17:56, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Dd1495: If you want me to respond here, fine.

A. Speedy deletion, correct. B. The cells are not lost, the article was, as you say a simple transclusion, and not more. C. The cells remain - if you want to write an article that's more than a transclusion, I will restore it - will you do that. However you say "I have created an image titled Deputies Navarre Restoration.JPG with the sole intention to place it as the only part of a wiki article, formatted as an annex." see answer to D below. D. We don't have Annexes on the English-language Wikipedia. We have files. Files are to be used to illustrate features in an otherwise stand-alone sourced content article. The article that was deleted was no more than the transclusion of the still-existing file.

I hope that answers your questions.

Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:04, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Dd1495: Another idea: why don't you write the article on Navarrese participation in Spanish Government where you can use the File:Deputies Navarre Restoration.JPG to illustrate the participation. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:09, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Mr/Mrs Carlossuarez46

Thanks for your prompt answer. I appreciate your speedy responses very much.

Your kind response answers most of my questions, or sort of answers them. I realize you are very busy so I will not investigate details which might seem like splitting hair.

However, since you mentioned it was a speedy deletion, I would still be grateful to learn what happened to the “contest” button.

I would also be grateful for info whether it was “no context” or “simple transclusion” the reason for deletion. You see, I intend to create a wiki article with its only content a table (not an image) with another list of other deputies. If the reason for deletion was “simple transclusion” I guess this new entry would not quality for deletion. If the reason for deletion was “no context” it would qualify for deletion anyway.

Cheers,--Dd1495 (talk) 10:15, 25 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Article deletions[edit]

Have you been notifying the authors of the articles you have nominated for deletion? It's not required, but it seems like the best practice. Thanks, Altamel (talk) 01:51, 18 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • It's worse than that. You filed 51 AfDs in the course of five hundred edits and two days, and it's obvious -- with as little as three minutes between AfDs -- that you failed to make the cursory checks for sources that WP:BEFORE requires BEFORE you file an AfD. It would be the best thing for you to do to pull ALL these nominations, until the point where you have the time to take the required steps before filing an AfD. I'm afraid the alternative to you doing this within a day is to take this to WP:ANI for further action. Ravenswing 09:07, 18 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have to agree here. The first few nominations I've looked through recently, have been pretty far off the mark. You've been here a long time...what's going on? Sergecross73 msg me 12:55, 18 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Sergecross73: Pepsiman has little beyond the mktg campaign with which it was linked, no independent coverage. As for the Kominas, I don't think that the coverage is significant. See WP:TRIVIAL coverage of nearly any band. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:30, 18 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Have you read the AFD for Pepsiman since creating it? As I pointed out, you actually indirectly linked to an independent third party reliable source in your nomination. It's that sort of thing that is making people question some of these sloppy nominations. Sergecross73 msg me 19:23, 18 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Err: you are completely mistaking WP:TRIVIA for something else -- what that guideline refers to is the use of trivia sections, and has nothing to do with the notability of subjects. I don't doubt that your personal view as to how long a source has to be is what it is; it just bears no resemblance to current consensus on the subject (as reflected in unanimous consensus against you in the articles I cited above), nor to the pertinent footnote of the GNG on the subject, and I strongly urge you to better familiarize yourself with that consensus. Ravenswing 03:54, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I grimace at the thought of going through any more of your AFD's, however, I've closed several as speedy/snow keeps. I urge you to reconsider some of your nominations or give me the ok to go ahead and speedy close all of them so you may format better nominations and check WP:BEFORE - otherwise, as @Ravenswing: said, this is odd and disruptive behavior and will be taken to AN/I. Dusti*Let's talk!* 01:22, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yeah, I went through most of them. Not all were so desperately flawed as the ones I cited above: some I agreed with and voted to Delete; others I disagreed with, but wouldn't have found the nominations egregious if they'd been done singly.

But I am troubled: troubled that someone with so terrible a grasp of some important guidelines nonetheless cited them to support his POV, someone who doesn't scruple to cite guidelines that have nothing to do with his point, someone who doesn't have a grasp of current deletion consensus and someone who filed 51 AfDs in a row without paying any attention to WP:BEFORE ... is an admin, someone with the authority to enforce Wikipedia policies. That's several shades of Not Good. Ravenswing 02:36, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Ravenswing: I started to go to AN/I but stopped thinking it might be best for you considering you're the one who combed through the edits and discovered the 51 some odd AFD's - lord knows if there's any addition recent. Dusti*Let's talk!* 02:42, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Any thoughts on all of this, Carlossuarez46? You haven't really engaged me much in discussion other than very vague claims of "no, its not notable or significant". If you'd acknowledge some of these concerns, it'd probably save everyone some time at ANI. Sergecross73 msg me 13:31, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've been busy with my dad after his surgery - so I haven't really been on WP for a few days. If you have issues with the nominations, please comment in the AFD's. That the forum for whether or not articles are kept. I'm here to build an encyclopedia - if you want forum shopping and drama, you know where ANI is, but I'm really too busy to do much responding in the next few days. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 15:04, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, it wouldn't be forumshopping in this situation, considering it'd be the first place where they were being discussed collectively. (Outside of your talk page, where you haven't exactly been very receptive. And people have been bringing it up at the individual AFDs, many of which are being closed as keep.) People are more concerned with the overall picture here - how/why you made so many bad nominations, in such a short period, without any remorse or ownership, with having so much experience with Wikipedia.
  • I really am sympathetic to bigger things taking up your time in real life. It happens to me plenty too. And by all means, take care of that first. That's what matters, this is just a hobby. But when it happens to me, I try to be a little more...I don't know...apologetic? Not for "real life responsibilities", but that you you made here mistakes here along the way. Or maybe you still feel you're not wrong? Fine. But you haven't really articulated yourself very well. You've given more of a "Just deal with it" type vibe, which makes it sound like you don't care.
  • It'd just be nice to have a little more insight. When you get the chance, of course. So you don't end up returning to ANI or admin recall discussions. If you can't even do that much, well, I'd have to start siding with the people who are so upset with you right now... Sergecross73 msg me 16:46, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Sergecross73: @Ravenswing: I'm back after the worst few weeks of my life. Are we to continue where we were or just reflect that there are higher priorities in life than editing WP, we should be nicer to each other, and we all make mistakes. I'll leave it to you. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:19, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • This isn't a matter of making mistakes; it's pervasive ignorance of several Wikipedia policies and guidelines. Honestly, I endorse Sergecross73's statements: the degree to which you refuse to address these serious questions is very troubling. It's incumbent on you as an admin to know the rules, to learn the rules, to not make them up as you go along and to be responsive to those who have problems with your actions. If you don't have the time, mental energy or willingness to do so, then do the project a favor and quit as an admin. Seriously. Ravenswing 02:39, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't understand what is animating your vehemence. I've addressed your comments - you can choose to ignore my comments. All I can do is promise to do better and forgive your mistakes as well. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 17:23, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • What "animates" our concern is that you have not addressed these concerns. I state above that you completely misunderstood WP:TRIVIA, and stated so in the applicable AfDs. You have made no answer to that, either there or here. I listed above AfDs on which you not merely made no attempt to find sources, as WP:BEFORE requires, but some of which you ignored the sources already listed. You have made no answer to that, either there or here. Ravenswing 01:20, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • WP:TRIVIAL, a typo. You mentioned 51 Afd's, many of which are already closed, some deleted some kept, others despite 2 weeks no one has piped up with any sources. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 17:02, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the late response, I hadn't noticed being pinged. Anyways, I never intended any harm or Ill-will, I was just trying to get you to talk a bit more, to keep this out of ANI, because of how crazy things can get there. I hope all is well. This deletion appears rather clearly inappropriate. US magistrate judges are generally notable under WP:NPOL, and a quick check of the Google cache shows a reasonable stub with an inappropriate sentence tacked on about a third party. Rather than deleting the article entirely, the inappropriate text should have been removed, perhaps RevDel'd. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo) (talk) 19:25, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Safdar[edit]

A tag has been placed on Safdar, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

Hoax based on the article of actor Fawad Afzal Khan.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". CSD[edit]

For things without at least one source? Interesting idea. I'd go with it, but I doubt it would get past the participants at Talk:CSD - especially those who talk a lot but are never actually seen (at least by me) at the CSD operational area, or in patrolling even. It's very like the gentry discussing how the peasants can improve their diet without actually having experienced scratching for a living or knowing what the beggars actually eat anyway. Me, I worked in patrolling edits by recent accounts (not NPP) for three years before getting my mop and going on to delete 38000 pages in three and a half years. My hands are not only dirty, but blood stained. I think some of them have never even deleted a U1 or tagged a G7. Back to your idea, it would have one thing that would upset them - they object to admins 'deciding' on things, making value judgements, etc. No sources is no sources is no sources. As clear cut as a one editor only G7 or a U1. But would you allow Facebook or an own site as the one source? Peridon (talk) 12:48, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dispatch News Desk[edit]

You have deleted a page names "Dispatch News Desk" link to the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dispatch_News_Desk Its a news agency from pakistan and one of the most famous as its the first online news agency which has started working in Pakistan. The legal authorization can be found on their webpage with the Government of Pakistan. They are also into google news from where i found them and added their name in wiki. For more info you can see this link http://www.dnd.com.pk/about/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 182.189.64.83 (talk) 06:45, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Every corporation in the US is "registered" with the government and can be found on the state of incorporation's website. Claiming it's on a government website is no more than an a claim that it exists. That it exists does not make it notable. Our WP:GNG does not state that all corporations are inherently notable - articles on non-notable corporations are deleted regularly at WP. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:24, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion: American International Motorcycle Expo (AIMExpo)[edit]

Hello, I am following up regarding the American International Motorcycle Expo page you have marked to deleted. For reference, the page may be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_International_Motorcycle_Expo I would greatly appreciate some clarification on why the page should be deleted as I have cited multiple, credidbile and objective/third-party media sources that support the information contained in the listed. Is the request to have the page removed due to a lack of cited articles, the credibility/content of the articles, or something else?

Thank you and I look forward to your feedback. Sroegner (talk) 01:47, 8 October 2014 (UTC)sroegner[reply]

Proposed deletion of Bagla[edit]

The article Bagla has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

It is unlikely that this village even exists. Whether it does or not, nothing in this article is verifiable.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Philae[edit]

Strange thing I just ran into at Philae. Ever since your edit more than eight years ago, the following statement has remained in the article:

Bigeh, like Philae, was a holy island; its and rocks are inscribed with the names and titles of Amenhotep III, Rameses the Great, Psammetichus II, Apries, and Amasis II, together with memorials of the later Macedonian and Roman rulers of Egypt.

There seems to be something wrong with "its and rocks" (its what and rocks? Or is it just the rocks?) but I'm not sure what it's actually supposed to say, so I couldn't fix it myself. Sideways713 (talk) 09:15, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wait, I just figured out where you got it from: [1], which has the same apparent error. Sideways713 (talk) 09:20, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your input at various cfds aren't being counted, apparently[edit]

I have automatically detected that your edit to Bill Harrison (Californian politician) may have broken the syntax by modifying 2 "[]"s and 2 "{}"s likely mistaking one for another. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Taham[edit]

Personal question[edit]

Are you from Spain (if I may ask)? Today I saw -regrettably only a part of- a Spanish film which was hilariously funny. It was about General Franco and a "double". I believe I had not laughed this much since Peter Sellers entered the party house. (In fact I had begun laughing already when he lost one shoe trying to enter the place! :-) I don't know either the name of the film (reason for which I am disturbing you) or of the actors, but I understand the leading actors were twins, because I saw two people with the same name at the top of the cast. I would like to ask you if you can tell me the name of this film, as I would like to find it somewhere and watch completely. Thank you and salu2. --Why should I have a User Name? ISIL[edit]

Hi, regarding your views at categories under discussion, please be aware that ISIL are nothing more than a group. There are several editors that, with whatever motive, are pushing to categorise all these various groups as ISIL and to indicate ISIL presence in a variety of locations across Africa and the middle-ease directly on maps and in any other possible location. Without that category we most likely end up indicating ISIL as being radically expanded, unless you want to be otherwise directly involved to stop that. Gregkaye 13:49, 21 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

About your (non)participation in the January 2012 SOPA vote[edit]

Hi. I am Piotr Konieczny (User:Piotrus), you may know me as an active content creator (see my userpage), but I am also a professional researcher of Wikipedia. Recently I published a paper (downloadable here) on reasons editors participated in Wikipedia's biggest vote to date (January 2012 WP:SOPA). I am now developing a supplementary paper, which analyzes why many editors did not take part in that vote. Which is where you come in :) You are a highly active Wikipedian (15th most active!), and you were active back during the January 2012 discussion/voting for the SOPA, yet you did not chose to participate in said vote. I'd appreciate it if you could tell me why was that so? For your convenience, I prepared a short survey at meta, which should not take more than a minute of your time. I would dearly appreciate you taking this minute; not only as a Wikipedia researcher but as a fellow content creator and concerned member of the community (I believe your answers may help us eventually improve our policies and thus, the project's governance). PS. If you chose to reply here (on your userpage), please WP:ECHO me. Thank you! --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 14:56, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox flags[edit]

Hi there. I have a question about a comment you made way back here in 2012. You wrote: "we could word the guideline to make that noncompliant; nothing will stop any editor from doing anything - but will give the community's imprimatur to sanction a revert. How about, "Human geographic articles - for example settlements and administrative subdivisions - may have flags in infoboxes; however, physical geographic articles - for example, mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, and swamps - should not. Where a single article covers both human and physical geographic subjects (e.g. Manhattan), the consensus of editors at that article will determine whether flag use in the infobox is preferred or not."" Soon after, it was incorporated into Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Icons, where it remained unchanged until this week.

What did you mean by "where a single article covers both human and physical geographic subjects"? Did you mean an article that was both a place and a unique geographic entity (such as Miami Beach, which is both a peninsula and a city)? Why did you choose Manhattan as an example, but not add "island" to your list of examples of a physical geographic article?

Changes are being proposed to this manual of style, and I'm trying to get some background into the history of this paragraph.

Deletion of page from 2007: Megaputer Intelligence - unsure if same topic[edit]

Hello, I added Megaputer Intelligence to a topics page about List of text mining software[1]|Then when I searched for Megaputer Intelligence it said that you had deleted it back in 2007. A message said if I wasn't sure that it is the same content then I should check with the person that deleted it. Can you check to see if what you deleted was about a software company in Bloomington, IN? If so, can you explain why it was deleted or reinstate it so I can add some information about that company? Thanks!

Your contributed article, Agri people[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Agri people. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Agri caste. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Agri caste – you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. MahenSingha (Talk) 18:53, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pipis[edit]

Hi Carlos- I'm contacting you about an edit you made way back in 2008. I've just redirected Pipis to the dab page Pipi, and I was wondering if the mention of any Armenian village was appropriate (see your edit from the time). Is that one village known by three different names? I have added it to the dab page at this time, but I'll leave it with you! Josh Milburn (talk) 20:59, 7 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Welsh-speaking people[edit]

Given the centuries of persecution suffered by Welsh-speakers (just read the history - it makes for shocking reading), the fact that the Welsh language still exists as a living language is nothing short of a miracle. Naturally therefore, it is of much interest to those interested in the Welsh language, those interested in Welsh current affairs, those interested in minority languages as well as to many members of the public in general, for it to be acknowledged that certain notable public figures e.g. politicians, sportspeople or musicians have the ability to speak Welsh. Indeed, failing to do so seems to suggest that the Welsh language is of no significance, to anybody. Whilst some may argue that the language that one speaks is not actually significant, this viewpoint is likely to be prevalent in individuals with a limited understanding of minority languages/cultures. Put another way, whilst the fact that a notable person can speak English may not be necessarily of interest - mainly due to the fact that English is the third most widely-spoken language in the world - by contrast, when a notable person who happens also to speak Welsh is not acknowledged as a Welsh speaker this is missing a very important point, simply because Welsh is much less prevalent than English. Yes, defining a cohort of Welsh-speaking people is of interest to many people, even if that does not happen to include the person(s) who instigated the deletion of this category in the first place. Therefore, just as the section 'Notable people with the name Prabhu', or 'Category:Black British people', for example, may not be of interest to a certain individuals, the fact that these Categories/Sections exist confirm the fact that they are of interest to at least some Wikipedia users, and the same is true for 'Category:Welsh-speaking people'. I hope that the majority of Wikipedia users/editors wish to build a more informative and inclusive encyclopaedia, and not an encyclopaedia that projects an Anglo-American bias whereby smaller cultures and languages are dismissed. I therefore call upon those who instigated this deletion to see beyond their possible prejudices, and remain true to Jimmy Wales' Statement of Principles by re-instating this category without further delay please as many useful links have been lost with the current deletion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Haul~cywiki (talkcontribs) 19:26, 10 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

2015 Thalys train attack

The obvious problem is a content dispute and many the participants are behaving substandardly. Best to protect the article for a time

Advice requested.

Q. Some articles in Wikipedia don't have much editor participation. This can lead to distorted and substandard behavior. Can you think of a way to improve on this?

Possible A. Difficult question. The concept of editors presenting a view and having a moderator decide on the merits makes sense but there is no such mechanism in Wikipedia, however, wise that might be.

Your answer:

Q. Why not act on your suggestion of full page protection? Instead of empowering some editors that behave badly, why not randomly pick a page protected version such as the version in effect on 8:30 on September 11, 2015 (approximate time of 9-11 attack), or 00:01 September 11 2015, or, if you really want a fresh start then 00:01 on September 1, 2015. I have not looked at the version at that time.

Q. How to make editors stop behaving substandarly. I am starting a program to act better than those other people. Can you be my unofficial advisor and resource? I even offered a cookie to a bad user and he just yelled at me for it.

Disruptive tags[edit]

Don't tag figures as 'citation needed' when the citation is already there and can be checked by anyone, as you did at Andarum language. If you can't be bothered to confirm the citation, then don't edit at all. — kwami (talk) 19:53, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, an article like Yele language should not have a DEFAULTSORT template at all. Those are intended solely to alphabetize articles in categories when the categories cannot do that properly, e.g. due to strange characters in the title. If you add DEFAULTSORT to an article and it is moved, it will no longer sort properly in its categories. (Yes, I know, there are thousands of articles with unnecessary DEFAULTSORT templates. We should get a bot to remove them all, just haven't bothered yet.) — kwami (talk) 19:56, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

And please stop removing the categories from unclassified languages. It's disruptive. — kwami (talk) 20:10, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Kwamikagami: The citation was not cited; no one need go looking for a figure without a footnote to a slew of references to see if ANY support it. Second, why did you have Yele sorted to "Yeli Dnye Language", some WP:OR on your part. That's the dreadful condition in which you left it, if you cannot clean up after yourself, please don't edit. And third, if the language is "unclassified" then your putting it in a language family category is vandalism: "a deliberate attempt to damage Wikipedia." As I've told you on your talk page - you cannot place items in mutually exclusive categories. If the best and equally reliable sources conflict, the safer route is to put them in neither category. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 21:36, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, you're either a troll or clueless. Either way you shouldn't be editing articles. Nothing you just said was true. Well, technically it was true that we didn't cite the citation, but since when do we ever cite citations? Second, why did you kill your mother? (I.e., if you add a category to an article that contains an error, should you no longer edit because you didn't fix the error?) Finally, following sources is not "vandalism", and if you're incapable of grasping that, then by WP:competence is required you really shouldn't be here. As for deleting all categories so as not to have to choose, that would be a deliberate attempt that damages Wikipedia. — kwami (talk) 22:13, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Translation/identification question[edit]

Blessings brother!! I am interested in this 1838 book -- Il legato di un vecchio ai giovani della sua patria

I am especially interested in understanding this passage on page 28:

Can you tell me what this means in English? Would this be good as a source for this project? I can not quite figure out if authorship is disclosed here. Blessings!! Pandeist (talk) 23:47, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Towns and Villages in Armenia[edit]

Hi,

I listed 66 settlements that doesn't have any articles in Armenian wiki and others wikis

For Examples Nerkin-Chambarak, Verin-Chambarak are not towns and I Think must be merged to Chambarak

According to this page > Պատմություն (Ճամբարակ քաղաքը ձևավորվել է երեք բնակավայրերի միացումից. դրանք են Կրասնոսելսկը, Վերին Ճամբարակն ու Ներքին Ճամբարակը) Chambark it is consits of three parts

What do you think? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Modern Sciences (talkcontribs) 08:21, 18 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • The sources seem to be mixed on whether they are separate or merely part of a single settlement. Merge as you see fit. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:04, 18 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I listed of theses 66 settlements province by province For example > Tavush province : Akhbrak, Akhkikhli, Akhum, Geyarchin, Agdan, Turdzhan, Papanino, and Akhsu, Armenia

that have the same problem. I think you used old sources for creating these articles that some of these settlements that exists before Independence of Armenia in 1991. your assistance please...[edit]

You closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Byron Hyde, in 2007. Hyde is a figure of import for those who consider they have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and, more recently, for those who suspect routine vaccinations trigger auto-immune disorders.

I agree with those in the delete camp, that IF all the coverage of him was in unreliable and non-authoritative publications from within the groups who consider him a leading figure he wouldn't come close to measuring up to our criteria for notability.

On the other hand, WP:Wikipedia is not censored. When mainstream publications start to cover him, then he does start to have factors that add to his notability. If mainstream publications cover him, we shouldn't hold back from covering him, merely because we think his work is questionable.

I don't have a dog in this fight. I don't currently know anyone who thinks they have CFS, or who doesn't believe in vaccination. But I spent some time yesterday looking to see whether Hyde did have some measure of wikipedia notability. If he does have enough for an article I think we should cover him. I don't think there is any topic that can't be covered from a neutral point of view, with enough effort. I think the draft I prepared, at User:Geo Swan/Byron Hyde, is neutrally written, but falls short of our current notability criteria.

I am going to make two requests of you. Could you graft the previous revision history of Byron Hyde to User:Geo Swan/Byron Hyde? My second request? Could you graft the previous revision history of Byron Marshall Hyde to User:Geo Swan/Byron Hyde?

Byron Hyde has been protected. If I decided my draft was ready for the main article space I'd have to get it unprotected. I'll cross that bridge if I come to that point.

A page about an Iranian village[edit]

Hi, noting that there are several contribs by you on pages and navboxes about Iranian villages, I report this "fact". Half an hour ago i marked as patrolled the new page Seirgah (this version) first contrib of a new user. Searching for the eventual article in Farsi (fa:سیرگاه), to update the link on Wikidata, I noticed that it was created by you as Sirgah. The strange thing was that an anon (12.247.217.42), some hour before the creation of "Seirgah", changed the text on Sirgah and on the Template:Chalus County (both edited by you). Btw, I reverted both anon edits and transformed Seirgah in a redirect to Sirgah. Btw, the Talk:Seirgah, previously created by me for wikiprojects, and after transformed in a redirect to Talk:Sirgah, has been tagged for speedy deletion by me (it's IMHO redundant and is not a "redir from move"). I reported this to you just to ask if, in your opinion (due to your contribs on that pages), the page Seirgah is plausible as redirect. On Google I found at almost nothing (differently from "Sirgah"), but I'm not an expert of transliteration from Farsi to Latin alphabet (so, it should be valid). Just to be sure that Mapmeister's and anon contribs are not a joke/vandalism. Regards, and sorry for the length of the message. --Dэя-Бøяg 23:36, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for the efforts to keep the integrity of the name. However, a quick google search will show that both spellings are used. Therefore, this is not a joke or vandalism. The mistake is that while it's written in Farsi that way (typed digitally), the actual written word has an extra character (mark) that is not included because of technical reasons and brevity. These marks indicate a different quality of the vowel. An example of this is with German umlauts. Sirgah, the way it is currently transliterated means place of garlic, when it should stand for place of traveling as in the town's meaning (pronounced Seirgah). The native readers understand how it should be pronounced when reading the simplified Farsi version, and the more accurate transliteration is Seirgah, even if previously spelled differently by other people or governments. The point of this is to make it more accurate, not follow what others did previously en mass without understanding full details of another language. I have also asked google maps to update, but I don't think they will since they are citing Wikipedia. This is my first wiki edit. Regards. Mapmeister (talk) 16:15, 4 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

When you PROD an article like Radha Govind Dham please notify the editor who created it (in this case their first article creation): that way they might improve the article, rather than just be surprised to find it has disappeared. PamD 07:46, 4 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Tiberiopolis, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Vicar Apostolic of the Northern District. Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Fanuj County requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Extended confirmed protection[edit]

Hello, Carlossuarez46. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

10,000 Asia Challenge[edit]

Hi, I wondered if you'd be interested in joining Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge? The idea is to showcase the work being done on wikipedia across the continent, and inspire more people to create and work on countries which might not usually get much attention and then possibly running some contests to bring in new editors. I know it's very existence will definitely make me more likely to contribute more Asian countries. Could be a way to highlight work needing doing for towns and villages for some countries and draw in new editors! Miss your work on Iranian villages! If interested add your name to the participants and I'll consider setting something up later in the month.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:39, 8 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers[edit]

Hi Carlossuarez46.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Altamirano, Guanajuato[edit]

Hello! While looking through old orphaned articles I stumbled upon Altamirano, Guanajuato which you created long ago (2008) and has been tagged as an orphan since 2009. I'm having some trouble verifying the villages existence and finding a place to de-orphan it. The listed reference on the page is dead and isn't archived. The listed coordinates seem to point to Ciudad Manuel Doblado. Any chance you could take a look? If you could find a ref and maybe even de-orphan the article that would be excellent! I suspect the issue is partially that I don't speak Spanish and know nothing about Mexico. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks a bunch! Happy editing! Two different places?[edit]

Hi! While trying to untangle redirects and hatnotes, I ran across two articles, Bibiheybət and Xanlar, Baku that seem to locate to the same place in Azerbaijan. You created both of these back in 2008. Plus, an alternate name for Xanlar is given as "Bibi-Eybat". Are they really separate places that have been conflated by subsequent editors? Or old and new names of the same place? Or...? Unfortunately, the link for Bibiheybət in GEOnet doesn't work, so I can't compare that way. I'd appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to check them out. Thanks. — Gorthian (talk) 06:13, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Altamirano, Guanajuato[edit]

The article Altamirano, Guanajuato has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

I can't find any evidence this place exists. The listed reference on the page is dead and isn't archived. The listed coordinates seem to point to Ciudad Manuel Doblado.

In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. hated

  • I mentioned this farther up on your talk page and at WP:Mexico but haven't heard anything from either. If you can find a source verifying the village exists, or would prefer the broader input of a WP:AfD discussion, feel free to remove the PROD tag. Happy editing! Iranian Places[edit]

Hi Carlossuarez46.

I have long admired the numerous articles you have created using Iranian census data.

I wish to recreate this for India. As I am sure you are aware, India is second only to China in the number of citizens using Internet and is leading the way with low cost mobile internet. There are also a variety of initiates to give people free Wikipedia access and so I think Indians could benefit from something smilier to what you have created for Iran. In the short-term, this will hopefully curb Indians with poor English creating pages for unremarkable villages without sources; which is a chagrin of many Wikipedia editors including myself.

I have the publicly available Indian census data for the year 2011 which includes: population of the place, literacy, caste makeup and whether the individuals are long-term or short-term workers.

How were you able to do this for Iran? How could I do this with Indian census data?

I appreciate your advice.

Merging Lake Parishan and Dasht-e Arzhan[edit]

I am thinking about merging these two articles, because this whole area is of ecological importance, indeed, it is called "Arzhan and Parishan Protected Zone." Leo1pard (talk) 04:42, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe by putting them together as a new article called "Arzhan and Parishan Protected Zone." Leo1pard (talk) 06:22, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Or maybe redirecting Lake Parishan to Arzhan and Parishan Protected Zone, and leaving Dasht-e Arzhan to be an article on the town. Leo1pard (talk) 06:41, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Genze[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

The survey should only take 5 minutes, and your individual response will not be made public. This survey will be integral for our team to determine how to better support administrators.

To take the survey sign up here and we will send you a link to the form.

We really appreciate your input!

Kachi in Azerbaijan[edit]

Hi, a few years ago you added hatnotes to Kachi (now moved to Kachi, Haripur) and to Katchi pointing to Qax (city) and Katex respectively, both being places in Azerbaijan. Reading the articles I don't quite get why. Do you happen to remember? – Uanfala 21:04, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • When the article was at Kachi, someone looking for another place with that name needed to be notified where that article was. Now there is no need since Kachi has been moved to an unambiguous title. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:20, 5 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • But Kachi is now a dab page which does not have a link to either of the two places in Azerbaijan. I haven't addded a link because I didn't find any mention in those articles that the places are known as "Kachi" and a cursory google search didn't seem to reveal much. That's kind of what I'm getting at: is "Kachi" an alternative name for either of the two places in Azerbaijan? – Uanfala 09:09, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Manesh[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Manesh requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. • Community ban discussions must now stay open for at least 24 hours prior to being closed.

  • Editors who have been found to have engaged in sockpuppetry on at least two occasions after an initial indefinite block, for whatever reason, are now automatically considered banned by the community without the need to start a ban discussion.
  • The notability guideline for organizations and companies has been substantially rewritten following the closure of this request for comment. Among the changes, the guideline more clearly defines the sourcing requirements needed for organizations and companies to be considered notable.

Guideline and policy news

  • The ability to create articles directly in mainspace is now indefinitely restricted to autoconfirmed users.
  • A proposal is being discussed which would create a new "event coordinator" right that would allow users to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit.

Technical news

  • AbuseFilter has received numerous improvements, including an OOUI overhaul, syntax highlighting, ability to search existing filters, and a few new functions. In particular, the search feature can be used to ensure there aren't existing filters for what you need, and the new equals_to_any function can be used when checking multiple namespaces. One major upcoming change is the ability to see which filters are the slowest. This information is currently only available to those with access to Logstash.
  • When blocking anonymous users, a cookie will be applied that reloads the block if the user changes their IP. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. This currently only occurs when hard-blocking accounts.
  • The block notice shown on mobile will soon be more informative and point users to a help page on how to request an unblock, just as it currently does on desktop.
  • There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.

some years ago[edit]

you made a comment at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Petojo_Utara,_Gambir - I am curious as to whether you still support unreferenced low level stubs that havent been touched since the 2012 querying of the status of the stubs - I have no problems if your ideas are the same or have changed at all - it is just the low level village stubs in the Indonesian project have not been touched - and as there are some very slow evolutionary aspects of the Indonesian project - I would be genuinely interested to know your opinion at this stage. JarrahTree 10:34, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think the way is to make sure what another editor at the old afd, and one has said today at the Indonesian noticeboard, to name them in the next order above in the adsministrative framework... perhaps might be a resolution. JarrahTree 12:20, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for you considered response - appreciated that you took the time to response. The following is said in AGF.
Yup so the Indonesian project has had many many over the years random fly by editors who create a vast array of UNDUE issues by unrepresentative globs of low level never ever to be edited again crap, technically the crap remains untouched and unsightly due to the principals you expound. And it is not as if I havent noticed even the more astonishing edits of large lists of names of villages by editors who should know better. Oh well, as I have said thanks, I mean it, but hey the legacy the principle leaves makes the place look like a very unthought out mess. JarrahTree 00:04, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
your responses are much appreciated. There are indeed some aspects of this collussus which have features that make some people leave, some people go crazy and muck about, and other things where they grind into passive aggressive responses. Most longer term existing editors obviously have pet peeves, only some of which eventually get resolved. I supposemy disconcerted askew glance at that which the outreach/glam people have very disorganised information on wikipedia english and seem quite disinterested in cleaning up after themselves.. or a whole range of other peculiar quirks. Your consideration to respond is much appreciated. Lets live in hope that somehow in the fullness of time (there I have said it), some aspects of every village on the planet is addressed, somehow. Technical news

  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
  • There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
  • It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.

Central Mackay Coast[edit]

Central Mackay Coast is an IBRA biogeographic region in Australia. When plants and animals are found in the region, they often contain a (red) link to it. I have been trying to subset the IBRA page so that people wanting to know about each bioregion don't have to scroll through all 89 bioregions plus their subregioms. I would prefer to write an article on Central Mackay Coast (biogeographic region) so that people would be less tempted to add extraneous and irrelevant stuff to it, but I am stuck with the fact that the author(s) of the [IBRA]] page called it Central Mackay Coast and there are already many links to this bioregion.... So at this point I am going ahead, and like you I hope there will be no self-promotional stuff added to it.. MargaretRDonald (talk) 07:24, 13 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If it will be duplicative, I would suggest writing in the current article and pruning the non-biogeographic stuff. The current article is the one that shows up in the template for all the IBRA's. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 16:55, 13 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The current article is the one I just wrote and contains nothing which is not about the biogeographic region. I couldn't find the old article. MargaretRDonald (talk) 01:07, 14 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Then it should be fine. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 17:17, 14 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Arshag Chobanian[edit]

Armenians are "people from Armenia, or of Armenian descent". All Armenians are Armenian, some just happen to be nationals of Armenia. Arshag was not a Turkish writer, so the category should be "writers of Turkey" if you want to include him. --RaffiKojian (talk) 16:42, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – July 2018[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2018).

Administrator changes

added PbsouthwoodTheSandDoctor
readded Gogo Dodo
removed AndrevanDougEVulaKaisaLTony FoxWilyD

Bureaucrat changes

removed AndrevanEVula

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC about the deletion of drafts closed with a consensus to change the wording of WP:NMFD. Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus that the {{promising draft}} template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.

Technical news

  • Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
  • Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon () in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates.
  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June).

Miscellaneous

  • Currently around 20% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 17% a year ago. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless if you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Hi.

Do you have the Durham book that cites Mars as the former name for Outingdale (i.e. have you verified the cite)? It's not available online or in a local library, so I spent some time trying to find an alternate source. I don't remember exactly why, and should have done a better job documenting my research, but I felt that it was unlikely to be true.

Thanks, —[AlanM1(talk)]— 07:10, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Does he cite his source(s) or give any more details? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 21:27, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@AlanM1: Durham cites a map from a 30' Placerville quadrangle map of 1893. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 23:55, 27 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks. I found the map and see Mars on it. I added a reference to it, since it's the only freely available online source. "Outingdale Resort" seems out of place, though, based on articles from the local paper here and here, which says it's a subdivision in the area (i.e. a tract or two, probably some cabins at the river, either outside the townsite or within it), not really an alternate name for the whole settlement. I suggest removing it. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 23:04, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Durham has that name. I will look to find that source when I'm home this weekend. Durham uses lots of USGS maps as sources and may have misinterpreted a name for a portion for a name for the whole. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:12, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – August 2018[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2018).

Administrator changes

added Sro23
readded KaisaLYmblanter

Guideline and policy news

  • After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Wikipedia.
  • Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.

Administrator changes

added None
removed AsterionCrisco 1492KFKudpungLizRandykittySpartaz
renamed Optimist on the runVoice of Clam

Interface administrator changes

added AmorymeltzerMr. StradivariusMusikAnimalMSGJTheDJXaosflux

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.

Technical news

  • Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
  • Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example is article_text which is now page_title.
  • Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is page_age.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of Checkuser and Oversight appointments. The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. The deadline to submit an application is 23:59 UTC, 12 September, and the candidates that move forward will be published on-wiki for community comments on 18 September.

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Wikipedia and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.
  • Because of a data centre test, you will be able to read but not edit the Wikimedia projects for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
  • The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
  • Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
  • Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.

Administrators' newsletter – November 2018[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (October 2018).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Partial blocks is now available for testing on the Test Wikipedia. The new functionality allows you to block users from editing specific pages. Bugs may exist and can be reported on the local talk page or on Meta. A discussion regarding deployment to English Wikipedia will be started by community liaisons sometime in the near future.
  • A user script is now available to quickly review unblock requests.
  • The 2019 Community Wishlist Survey is now accepting new proposals until November 11, 2018. The results of this survey will determine what software the Wikimedia Foundation's Community Tech team will work on next year. Voting on the proposals will take place from November 16 to November 30, 2018. Specifically, there is a proposal category for admins and stewards that may be of interest.

Arbitration

  • Eligible editors will be invited to nominate themselves as candidates in the 2018 Arbitration Committee Elections starting on November 4 until November 13. Voting will begin on November 19 and last until December 2.
  • The Arbitration Committee's email address has changed to arbcom-en@wikimedia.org. Other email lists, such as functionaries-en and clerks-l, remain unchanged.

Alea[edit]

Hi, your addition of Alea (Thessaly) is a duplicate of Alea (Arcadia). It comes from a mistake in Stephanus, because the correct city is the one in Arcadia. You quoted Hansen & Nielsen (p. 678), but they say there that "A number of toponyms are left out of consideration here, since they cannot be shown to denote historical settlements in existence in the Archaic and/or Classical periods or because they are incorrectly ascribed to Thessalia. They include Aiginion, Alea, etc.". Can you therefore delete the page? T8612 (talk) 00:07, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2018 election voter message[edit]

Hello, Carlossuarez46. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Halus (Assyria) moved to draftspace[edit]

An article you recently created, Halus (Assyria), does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. I noticed that you nominated it for deletion a few years ago. Coincidentally, I'm going through old gaming mags from the era, and have noticed that Pepsiman got a preview in the Spanish gaming magazine Superjuegos #87, p. 28. Pretty much all officially released console games are going to be notable, but for the JP only ones, the sources might be a bit more obscure, like Euro gaming mags. • A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
  • A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".
  • A proposal has been made to temporarily restrict editing of the Main Page to interface administrators in order to mitigate the impact of compromised accounts.

Miscellaneous

  • In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
  • Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.
