New Wikipedia Library collections and design update (August 2021)

The Wikipedia Library is pleased to announce the addition of new collections, alongside a new interface design. New collections include:

Additionally, De Gruyter and Nomos have been centralised from their previous on-wiki signup location on the German Wikipedia. Many other collections are freely available by simply logging in to The Wikipedia Library with your Wikimedia login!

We are also excited to announce that the first version of a new design for My Library was deployed this week. We will be iterating on this design with more features over the coming weeks. Read more on the project page on Meta.

Folk Music and Venues in Maine

Isabelle, How exactly are the links I added not pertinent to the topic of music in Maine? Because they are underground musicians or nonprofit venues that support underground artists? Is the page only for commercially successful acts? Re: linking in MIT Mystery Hunt

Hi, I noticed that my edit to MIT Mystery Hunt was reverted. The website to the MIT Mystery Hunt typically gets archived to web.mit.edu/puzzle/www/<year> (which perhaps pass the Huggle filter), although this has not happened yet for 2021. So the link that I provided led to the hunt running website which equivalently serves as the puzzle repository. We aren't planning on de-hosting the site until at least all of the content is migrated to the above link, which is when the link can be changed to point to the MIT website. --99.72.225.123 (talk) 00:52, 13 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi, it appears that people decided it's alright to add external links in the body on that article. I hadn't noticed that before reverting you, so I apologize. It might be worth writing in the edit summary that follows the pattern in the page (of links to hunts being present) to avoid future reverts, although it would be better if they were added as references, instead, so it follows the manual of style. Hi and thanks for reaching out, Socratesart! The preferred way to do that is by using the template {{Sfn}}, which stands for shortened footnote. You can see it being used in articles such as Ayn Rand and Animal Farm. The template's documentation has more information on how to use it, and I've also added an example on my sandbox for you to check it. As an example, if you wanted to cite a book by Williams, you'd add their book at the bottom of the page ({{cite book |last=Williams |first=John |year=1987 |title=Williams' book}}) and then add the reference in the text, like this: {{sfn|Williams|1987|p=245-248}}. I now see that my question was more how to add a "loc cit" citation to an article that only has a citation or notes section, where you have a full source citation and you want to add another from same source but only use the different page number, such as "loc. cit. Burqa Band

Hello Isabelle, Thank you for your feedback. The text I edited on the Burqa Band was actually less than neutral, containing inaccurate information. I followed the "appearance" of this "band" throughout, having lived in Afghanistan, and crosschecked all info. There is no evidence this ever existed as a band, apart from a couple of videos. Form "interviews" it appeared clear the "band" was formed with the impulse of a German music teacher in Kabul, who took the hcance to create world hype based on the novelty of the idea. They "had" only a couple of songs, some were "remixed" in Germany, and the "album" is only a rehash of these couple of songs. They never played live in Afghanistan, and the "German gig" was likely played by Germans wearing burqas. A funny novelty, but in the end, nothing like a "real band". The official source of the German label that released the songs in Germany, of course can not be taken seriuosly as it was in their interest to hype the novelty to increase sales. Thanks a lot. Hi Luk Haas. If you believe the sources used in the article are not reliable, please explain why in your edit summary or in the article's talk page and remove them. If you have reliable sources that confirm this band is a hoax, but still notable enough to have an article, then add those sources to the article. You can also propose the article's deletion, if you believe it is not notable enough to have an article. Adding unsourced information, or scare quotes to words is not the appropriate path. Hi Romero Williams, and welcome to Wikipedia. I removed the information you added because it lacked an inline citation. When adding a new item to a list (or any new information, really), we need editors to also add a citation from a reliable source for two main reasons: first, so we can verify that the information is correct; the second is so that we can tell if that information is notable and its addition is due. Olga Skabeyeva

Hi Isabelle! This is regarding Olga Skabeyeva, the Russian television host. The reason why I think there should be a mention that she is a propagandist, is because she in fact is. She works for All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, which is state-owned by the Russian government. Her only source of income is directly from the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company. She pushes a pro-government, in other words pro-Putin, agenda and goes after those who disagree with the government. It is a fact that Russia was supporting Donald Trump in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, and Olga Skabeyeva was doing everything in her power to smear his opponent, Joe Biden. Even now, Olga Skabeyeva smears only one American political party, the Democratic Party, as this is directly the views of the Russian government. Any state employed political talk show host, should be considered a propagandist because they are employed for one reason only, to spew the propaganda that the Russian dictatorship wants to sell to the Russian public. Hi anonymous user. I reverted your edits because calling someone a propagandist carries a negative tone, which we have to take seriously when dealing with biographies of living people. I had a quick look on other members of the Category:Russian propagandists and all of the biographies I checked had several reliable sources to backup that affirmation. Hi Isabelle! I would be happy to provide some sources. [1]. Another example of Olga Skabeeva being a propagandist is present in this article [2]. As we see in that article, the Russian government has many anti gay propaganda laws and Olga Skabeyeva spews homophobic slurs as a result of that. Also, in Olga Skabeyeva's wikipedia page article, it says she is a propagandist in her occupation. Also, it says in the second sentence that her nickname is "iron doll of Putin TV." Personally, I don't think those are good enough. The first one appears to be user generated content (although it contains several links to better sources in the page, which you might want to use), and the second one doesn't directly connect the word to the person (but could be used alongside other, stronger sources). Due to the high level of NPOV edits that appear in articles related to sportspeople, I might have been too quick on the revert button here. Users engaging in disruptive/unbecoming behavior in Talk:Trypophobia discussion

Hello. I'd like to ask you to take a look at users on the page Talk: Trypophobia.

Backstory: There's several problems going on with the page discussion, even before I got there, such an admin users musing on self-experiments they were doing and telling others not to discuss a topic which was subject to controversy (mainly concerning whether to keep the lead image there). I made a reply that I thought there was systematic bias in editor's decisions to keep the lead image where it was. Users were somewhat offended that I'd make references to implicit bias and connections I made about their page activity; some of that offense may have been justified. In any case, I was directed to open a dispute resolution to reopen an RfC from 2018, and after spending a while reading rules about discussion, I opened an ANI because I didn't think my request for a review of implicit bias would fit under any other dispute resolution action. I contacted the single person who went against the RfC consensus, Pengo and asked them for their feeling on what happened in that RfC and relayed my takeaway from that discussion to the other discussions. During the ANI, I was addressed by several non-admin users who did not identify that they weren't admins, mostly responding in a negative way, some of whom had previously participated in the Talk:Trypophobia discussion. They convinced me to close the ANI, and I started preparing to open a new RfC. One of my actions, in response to a recommendation in the ANI, was to open a request for review on WT:Med. Another user joined on to the discussion who had previously participated in Talk Trypophobia. While several people have replied in support of my position on other pages, none have been willing to visit the page and work on dispute resolution, so that my responding to 3-5, in my opinion, highly negative users has compounded my frustration with further issues.

Current problems: A user who was previously uninvolved made a post on Pengo's page asking us why we saw bias in the original RfC and replied with indignance several times. Now that user is accusing me of misinterpreting Pengo's position on the other talk pages, breaking a quote I made there in a way that I think was intended to create contention. The same user from pengo's page, Acidsetback, and another who came from the ANI, ScottishFinnishRadish, began, in my opinion, mocking me for suggesting that we ask a researcher for a picture which is less likely to cause a reaction in people with trypophobia. The latter user posted a picture of a wolf to mock my idea, saying that the wolf probably wouldn't cause a trypophobia reaction. Lastly, the user who responded when I asked for help on WP:Med, WhatamIdoing, I believe is now working against me, arguing against my points, creating research time for me, and repeatedly implying that my pursuit of the issue is a waste of time. I think this is a problem in that I asked for help on WP:Med pursuing the issue I was concerned with. If a user on that page believed my concerns were unfounded, they should have told me there rather than join in on the page to actively work against my line of inquiry.

Any comments you could provide or if you could look in to these issue would be helpful. I don't know. I don't believe these users are willing to work together, and have pre-determined that their thoughts on the subject are correct. @IronMaidenRocks: I read in passing that ANI as it was going on, but it was a bit too heavy on background context for me. Although I am sympathetic to your point of view, and would be for having a new MOS guideline on -phobia related articles where it concerns the lede image, I also agree with the ANI closing, that this is a content dispute. I see the discussion is progressing, so you could possibly open an RfC soon to see if consensus has changed.
Just as an aside, anyone can participate in a thread that is started on ANI, as it's usually a community process to decide what should be done with regards to another user. Although only administrators can apply blocks, anyone can speak their mind. Also, closures can be done by non-administrators in non-controversial cases, and where no admin action is required. Thanks for the comment. I think I'll do some work on finding new evidence before I try to start an RfC, but so far users aren't too keen on my idea of finding a new lead image. I'm not even sure why, really. Otherwise, at this rate, I don't think there are enough users on Wikipedia who would have some sympathy with the issue, not because of obvious and strict violations of Wikipedia policy but because the site is both internally and externally notorious for its limited diversity. That, in turn, can inform attitudes on rare conditions. Users there consider even the possibility that they could be subject to systematic bias to be offensive and seem to be unable to distinguish systematic bias discussion from accusations of personal bias. It's frustrating to deal with, but then I'm probably not the best person to try and soothe them given that I'm prone to writing in a cold and calculating, yet sometimes overly emotional tone. --IronMaidenRocks (talk) 23:06, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

Change to "norton antivirus page reverted because of no citation, but no citation needed

I pointed out on the Norton page that since the FBI has a backdoor in Norton Antivirus (already cited) but the product is sold outside of the US (already cited) this represents the risk of a cyber-terrorism attack from the US. You removed it asking for a citation, but no citation is needed because it's a natural conclusion. All the citable facts were already included in previous sentences that were already there, I just pointed out what they naturally added up to. If the FBI (a foreign government agency from the point of view of every country that isn't the USA) has a backdoor in Norton, and Norton is sold outside the USA, then it's a massive security hole that the USA could use to attack other nations. I didn't say anything about the likelihood of it happening though (which would need citation).

That could be qualified as WP:SYNTH. But, if you think that's an obvious conclusion that doesn't need a citation from a reliable source reaching that same conclusion (which should be easy to find, since it's an obvious conclusion), then feel free to revert my revert and add the information again. Although I appreciate your enthusiasm, I must tell you about a few of the policies of the project, more specifically a policy on corporation names, in that they "are not permitted because they are considered promotional" and "[a] user who both adopts a promotional username and also engages in inappropriately promotional behaviors in articles about the company, group, or product, can be blocked." So, my first suggestion is to request a username change to one that identifies you as a single editor. My second suggestion is that you read our policy on editing under a conflict of interest, which states that "you are strongly discouraged from editing affected articles directly".
I know this all sounds like a lot, but these are important policies in place to maintain the reliability of the project and trust of readers and editors in the information we present here. Good evening from Great Britain I am trying to set up a subpage from my user page. I thought I had done it OK as described in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:User_pages#User_pages_and_user_space I put a sentence of text on an apparent subpage but I can't find any link to it from my User page. Although you are, of course, allowed to create and edit pages about your company (under a different name, as your current username goes against our name policy, which is why I recommend changing your username or abandoning this account) you are strongly encouraged not to do so. Concerning the article on Mark Slater (courtesy link: Mark Slater (fund manager)), I'll note that all the additions by what I assume was an employee of your company had to be deleted due to copyright issues and it took recreation by another user and a lot of cleaning to get to an acceptable level. Hi Isabel, thanks for the message. I have updated a few items for this article and put the “draft article” in the top and clicked save. I couldn’t find out to now have this reviewed. Also yes I am related to the person in this article and fully disclose this and have been writing it without bias and using true articles, links and profiles to show this. RfA 2021 review update

Thanks so much for participating in Phase 1 of the RfA 2021 review. 8 out of the 21 issues discussed were found to have consensus. Thanks to our closers of Phase 1, Primefac and Wugapodes.

The following had consensus support of participating editors:

  1. Corrosive RfA atmosphere
    The atmosphere at RfA is deeply unpleasant. This makes it so fewer candidates wish to run and also means that some members of our community don't comment/vote.
  2. Level of scrutiny
    Many editors believe it would be unpleasant to have so much attention focused on them. This includes being indirectly a part of watchlists and editors going through your edit history with the chance that some event, possibly a relatively trivial event, becomes the focus of editor discussion for up to a week.
  3. Standards needed to pass keep rising
    It used to be far easier to pass RfA however the standards necessary to pass have continued to rise such that only "perfect" candidates will pass now.
  4. Too few candidates
    There are too few candidates. This not only limits the number of new admin we get but also makes it harder to identify other RfA issues because we have such a small sample size.
  5. "No need for the tools" is a poor reason as we can find work for new admins

The following issues had a rough consensus of support from editors:

  1. Lifetime tenure (high stakes atmosphere)
    Because RfA carries with it lifetime tenure, granting any given editor sysop feels incredibly important. This creates a risk adverse and high stakes atmosphere.
  2. Admin permissions and unbundling
    There is a large gap between the permissions an editor can obtain and the admin toolset. This brings increased scrutiny for RFA candidates, as editors evaluate their feasibility in lots of areas.
  3. RfA should not be the only road to adminship
    Right now, RfA is the only way we can get new admins, but it doesn't have to be.

Please consider joining the brainstorming which will last for the next 1-2 weeks. This will be followed by Phase 2, a 30 day discussion to consider solutions to the problems identified in Phase 1.
