WikiCup 2022 November newsletter

The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is

  • England Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
  • New York City Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
  • Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
  • Chicago PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
  • Toronto Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.

During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.

  • England Lee Vilenski wins the featured article prize, for a total of 6 FAs during the course of the competition and 3 in the final round.
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh wins the featured list prize, for 3 FLs in round 2.
  • Adam Cuerden wins the featured picture prize, for 39 FPs during the competition.
  • Toronto Z1720 wins the featured article reviewer prize, for 35 FARs in round 4.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius wins the good article prize, for 32 GAs in round 1.
  • SounderBruce wins the featured topic prize, for 4 FT articles in round 1.
  • England Lee Vilenski wins the good topic prize, for 34 GT articles in round 5.
  • Sammi Brie wins the good article reviewer prize, for 71 GARs overall.
  • Sammi Brie wins the Did you know prize, for 30 DYKs in round 3 and 106 overall.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 wins the In the news prize, for 106 ITNs in round 5 and 289 overall.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January and possible changes to the rules and scoring are being discussed on the discussion page. You are invited to sign up to take part in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to have a good turnout for the 2023 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners and finalists, and thank all participants for their involvement! • A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget. Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday!

Welcome to the 2023 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2023 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 14:17, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi! A quick note to explain that I reverted your edit on Milkshake! as it appears to have restored vandalism which an editor had removed. The shows listed are not broadcast on the channel which the article covers. Should have mentioned in the edit summary - apologies for the oversight. Bonusballs (talk) 22:39, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

@Bonusballs: I swear that talk page notification was instant the second I hit save on your talk page Well I appreciate the response, just remember to use manual undo on edits like those, and not rollback, as that is for vandalism. Thanks, and have a good day! :D Yoshi24517 Chat Online 22:42, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

Thanks!

for this[1]. I hit a wrong button in Huggle and reported w/o a diff. --DB1729talk 19:53, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

DB1729 It's fine, I have Huggle open, but can't use it as I don't have rollback rights, because of a silly mistake 6 months ago, but working hard to get it back, which is why I do a combination of Huggle and UltraViolet. A tip though, is you can have Huggle automatically report if you revert after they receive a level 4 warning. It's what I do. Thanks for the heads-up though! Yoshi24517 Chat Online 19:56, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
Hmmm! Maybe I got a setting wrong. I does report to AIV semi-automatically, but it always asks if I want to supply diffs before reporting. That's the part that tripped me up. I hit report without selecting any diffs, and then confirmed instead of cancelling. I will look into it further, but I don't think that can be changed to something full auto. DB1729talk 20:02, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
DB1729 It's very simple. Open the System menu, then click Options, go to warnings tab, and check the "Automatically report users to AIV page" check box. Here is an example diff: [2] of what the report says. Yoshi24517 Chat Online 20:05, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
Cool! That explains a couple things. I remember seeing that wording used by other editors and now I know. Thank you very much! DB1729talk 20:19, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
DB1729 Sorry for the pings, I have no idea if you are watching my talk page or not You're welcome! Glad I could help. Keep in mind, it only reports if you have been using the normal "revert and warn a user" button, and will only report if they have a level 4 warning on the page (for the current month, I THINK) and you "revert and warn" the user again. Happy editing! :D Yoshi24517 Chat Online 20:27, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

San Antonio TX UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy designation

Hi Yoshi, It is public information and the story was very well pressed when San Antonio was designated a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy on Oct. 31, 2017. The information is also incorrect in another Wiki article listing the cities, but I am overwhelmed with deadlines and work at the moment ... just trying to help and make sure your info is accurate. You can find the correct info here:

Removing censorship map

The map at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship#Around_the_world has wrong colors for the USA. If you click the map it cites this url https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship_and_surveillance_by_country as its source, but if you visit that url you'll see that USA is labeled an enemy of the internet, so the map has clearly wrong colors.

please restore the changes i made

Hello Yoshi, this is Jennifer S. Thanks for your message. I removed some footnotes/references from my own Wikipedia page because these references are not an accurate or relevant representation of my work in this context, and the reference numbers are added in the wrong place. In order to include these references i would need to do a major edit/addition to the overall text and I would need more time to do that accurately. I would therefore like to omit these references. Please reinstate my changes (remove the notes/references I deleted. thank you. 24.60.2.63 (talk) 05:54, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

First off, if you really are Jennifer S, you should not be editing your own article, you have a conflict of interest and that is a huge no no. Instead propose your changes on the talk page of the article, and try to get consensus for your edits there. Please read WP:COI for more information. Thank you. World Migration Organization

Hi, I was trying to change the content of this page, since we have efectivly started this organisation and is in full operation. The suggested page is from 2013. So we would like to update it to the official world migrant organisation: http://wmigration.org/ How can I do so? Johnolsen (talk) 20:05, 21 February 2023 (UTC)

@Johnolsen: First off, you make it sound like you work for the WMO, as such, you have a conflict of interest. What that means, is you should NOT edit the page, and instead, propose your edits on the talk page of the article. That way, there can be experienced editors who can work on your proposed edits while sounding in a more neutral tone for the encyclopedia. In addition, if you are working for and are paid by the WMO, you have to disclose a paid editing notice on your user page. See WP:PAID for more info. Yoshi24517 Chat Online 20:11, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
Hi, at the moment I'm only setting up the page for the WMO. so I have no financial or contractual connection with the WMO. I'm myself are an editor and publisher at Galilee.com and press magazine.com. So I have no further intrest in the WMO as so. I hope this information will clarify my actions. Johnolsen (talk) 20:23, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
So than, can I continue modifying the World Migration Organization page? Johnolsen (talk) 13:52, 22 February 2023 (UTC)
See your talk page. Yoshi24517 (mobile) (talk) 13:58, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

@Palgharvicharmanch: If you read the warnings on your talk page, you need to add sources with your information. You had no sources with it, and we can't add a bunch of stuff that could or could not be imaginary. Find sources to support your information. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Online) 20:01, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

It's up to you to find sources to support your additions. We aren't the ones who want to make the edits. As long as you can find a reliable source that should include your edits, then you can edit your text in with your sources included. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Online) 20:19, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

Suggestion for warning users

Hello and good day. Just a suggestion, do what you will, but it seems to me to be a bit unfair to give multiple escalating warnings to a user without waiting time between the warnings, such as you did here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:113.61.33.153&action=history

At least give them time to see the warning and adjust their editing behaviour before issuing an additional warning. Just my thoughts. Vontheri (talk) 23:07, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

Mount Hope Bridge edits

I am trying to edit misinformation regarding bicyclists and pedestrian access. I work for the authority who owns and operates the bridge and we DO NOT allow either on this bridge. Please allow the deletions and replace with:

"The Rhode Island Turnpike & Bridge Authority does NOT permit bicycles and pedestrians on this bridge and notifies law enforcement of any such activity."

The references the former "writer" uses are outdated and incorrect. 174.77.112.98 (talk) 21:18, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

IP, where's your source? You have to include a reliable source for your edits. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Online) 21:19, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
I am the Director of Engineering for RITBA, that is my source! 174.77.112.98 (talk) 21:21, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
We have no idea who you are. Please provide a published source for your changes. ... discospinster talk 21:22, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
So anyone can reference incorrect material from 3rd party sources and that is accepted, even though incorrect......but the bridge owner can't correct information. Makes sense! Wiki is crap! 174.77.112.98 (talk) 21:24, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
You can, if you provide a published source for your edits. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Online) 21:29, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
How is the material incorrect? It says the same thing you are saying, only with a source. ... discospinster talk 21:31, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
Their references are saying bicycles ARE permitted, but the references are 3rd parties who have no authority over the bridge. 174.77.112.98 (talk) 21:32, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
So find a source that says otherwise. Find a source that says that bicycles are not permitted. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Online) 21:34, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
I will create the source/reference on our own website and cite that. That should trump ALL other references otherwise, since we own and operate the bridges! 174.77.112.98 (talk) 21:49, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
The article Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge says the walkway is inaccessible to the public. The headline of the source says "The Bubbler: Why Is A Walkway On The Jamestown Bridge Inaccessible To Pedestrians And Bikers?" And yet you removed it. ... discospinster talk 21:35, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
For the Jamestown bridge, they talked about a walkway on the north side. There is no "walkway" on either side, only a space between the guardrail and outer railing that is used for maintenance. AND that exists on both the north and south side. My edited statement is concise and removes all erroneous information that is misleading. 174.77.112.98 (talk) 21:44, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Then you need to provide an in-depth, non-routine, independent-of-the-subject news/review source that is written by an identifiable author and subjected to rigourous fact-checking that explicitly corroborates the claims you're making. Merely pointing out that it is still available for sale is irrelevant - abandonware gets sold all the time. Neither of the two sources you provide cuts it. —Jéské Couriano (No further replies will be forthcoming.) 19:27, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

In regards to my recent contribution to this aforementioned page, i find it interesting that you have pulled down this so quickly, despite my expertise in Geography, civil architecture and bridges, whilst also having lived in Bristol for over 30 years. Glasgow bus IP

Hi, I think you've misunderstood what this IP is trying to do. They are adding sourced material, just not doing it the right way. It's definitely not vandalism. I've fixed up First Glasgow and 500 Glasgow Airport Express so they should cite the intended source. They're not brilliant sources, but they'll do for basic facts in the absence of anything else - certainly a news search for the 500 Express doesn't come back with any other than the news article a year ago regarding the suspended services, which now appears out of date. The edit to First Scotland East did look like vandalism though, which makes this a rather odd mix. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 21:20, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

Hey Ritchie333. Aha, you've run into the same thing I have. It's like they're complete opposites of eachother, I don't know what the heck is going on. Like, half their edits are one thing, half their edits are something else. It's a bit bizarre. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Online) 21:40, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

Sockpuppet notice

Hi! I requested that your sockpuppet block notices on User:Speaker_McCarthy and User:Speaker Kutschbach be removed because the SPI case is still open at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/TylerKutschbach. Once it is closed I believe it would be appropriate to then marked them as blocked for sockpuppetry. Until then I believe it is premature, even if they have been blocked for other reasons. 49ersBelongInSanFrancisco (talk) 05:18, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

49ersBelongInSanFrancisco It is obviously them, same edit behavior and such. Usually, if it is the same edit behavior, they can be blocked for that alone even if the block reasons don’t reflect block evasion/sockpuppetry. They are suspected, which a CU can easily change to confirmed by Checkuser later. Even so, most, not all CUs will decline to check for links if the sock(s) was blocked on behavior alone, because it was obvious and there is nothing to do. Admins can/will tag socks with a suspected notice even without a SPI. Yoshi24517 (mobile) (talk) 12:35, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Concerns

-Fixing malformed section created by Kmpjmp. Yoshi24517 (mobile) (talk) 21:47, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Why did you reverse the edits I made to my own page? Seems to me I should decide what is said about me. Are your personal relationships on wikipedia? I don't want mine there. And as a woman I am so tired of being defined by the men around me. That's old sexist stuff and I want it removed. I am not a techy so making the edits was a bit arduous. Please publish my edits - they are all accurate and they reflect a little ofmwhat I contributed to BC rather than on the men in my life.

Also I would be willing to edit Dr Ian MacPherson's page which is pitiful, quite frankly, for someone who was a big player at the International level (International Cooperative Alliance) but not if I'm just wasting my time. I would consult with the BC Coop movement and others who worked with academically (Ian was Dean of Humanities at UVic, and founder of the coop studies institute ( with me and Andrew Petter) - lots of rich info - but it seems a waste of my time unless I know it will be left as edited.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kmpjmp (talkcontribs) 20:29, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi, first of all, editing your own page is strongly discouraged. See WP:COI. Secondly, nobody owns a page. See WP:OWN. What I suggest you do, is suggest your edits on the talk page of the article, and have somebody else do your edits for you. Yoshi24517 (mobile) (talk) 21:47, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
Someone else - a woman - edited it a long time ago for the same reason but it went nowhere. I guess I'll just let others - likely men I guess - define me the way they want. Seems to me that while I don't own the page I do own my own information. Too bad. I'll just bow out and let others talk about me any way they like. 🙄. Anyway thanks for responding. Hey, thanks for reaching out about the edit. It wasn't a mistake, I removed the text and source because the link and site are dead, and no credible source for this claim exists. In fact, history shows the opposite. Japanese in Brazil were heavily discriminated against and had their language and culture banned during and after WW2, and many war criminals stayed in Japan/Asia, were given amnesty and turned against the new enemy, communism. Hi Yoshi24517. I can see that you have previously placed a warning on this talk page. The user has just placed a very odd warning for vandalism on my talk page (something I have never experienced before and I don't exactly think my edit history gives him a reason to suspect it) and considering that he has has no user page and that your warnings are the only contributions to his talk page it all seems a little weird. Perhaps someone should look into his conduct here on Wikipedia to make sure that he is here for the right reasons. Just a thought.Ramblersen2 (talk) 20:54, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

Gene Ween

Hello - per your message, the items were mostly removed because they are not really relevant to the artist's career (ex. one show that he played with another band). Seems like it's best to not mention at all, lest we have to mention all other times he joined other performers.

Names were removed since the page is about Gene Ween and not people who are not public figures. Please advise as to when I can re-edit. Mm22902 (talk) 20:13, 24 April 2023 (UTC)

If you use an edit summary to explain your changes next time, then it would make it an explained content removal and not an unexplained content removal. You can put your reasoning for the removal in the edit summary box, that way it lets other editors know why you deleted the content. Hope that helps. Speedy deletion of an ownerless page

Whats the story with you? Why do you keep blocking me from merely stating Dan Daly was of Irish descent? I've provided citations. The mans last name was Daly. Its common knowledge. I cant understand why you keep reverting it. I haven't drastically altered Dan Dalys story. Clancy1987 (talk) 20:45, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi Clancy1987. You keep putting your sources in your edit summary. That doesn’t count as sourcing. All sources have to go inside the article itself. Putting it in the edit summary does not count. See this page on how to reference. Yoshi24517 (mobile) (talk) 21:30, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

Multiple warnings

Hi! Figured it was best not to draw out conversation on the IP talk page. I wasn't intentionally warning additionally, I was using the automatic AntiVandal settings. I think the script noticed there had been warnings enough to recommend reporting to AIV, but still automatically warned (I'm not sure, I'd have to see it again). Anyway, the IP's blocked now, and I'll try to keep an eye out for that as I patrol. Thanks! Perfect4th (talk) 03:58, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

Perfect4th Well that's good to know. AV seems to "reset" the warning level if an IP happens to delete all their warnings. Huggle seems to keep it memorized. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Online) 04:00, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

Demetre Anastassakis

Hi! Thanks for the antivandal work. Mildly, the tone of this is pretty blunt in response to someone who says they're writing about their dead parent. They probably didn't also need the warning about paid editing. Appreciate it is in a template and your overall COI message is accurate. However sometimes a handwritten response works better. All the best. -- Euryalus (talk) 23:38, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Yuli_Anastassakis&diff=prev&oldid=1154675998
Just saw it, thanks for the amendment. Agree it would be good if we had more flexible template options! And of course your overall COI point was correct: they shouldn't directly edit the page. -- Euryalus (talk) 23:58, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

Your behaviour and attitude

You are accusing me of misbehaviour!?! Oh, the hypocrisy. It was you who initiated the difficulties by falsely claiming unexplained removal of content, adding inappropriate warnings on users pages, undertaking an edit war and then denying you were edit warring. I note you have long history of edit warring, and associated blocks: you clearly haven't learned. And for someone apparently so concerned about the style of interaction by users on Wikipedia you are advised to stop referring to others as 'dumbass', which edit summaries demonstrate you've done on multiple occasions ... so yet further examples of hypocrisy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.94.27.116 (talk) 23:18, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

Those are people who try to edit my user page which can't because of a filter. Though I would hope you don't focus on other edits that aren't related to this conversation. On another note, please sign your posts with 4 tildes, so we know who says what at what time. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Online) 23:21, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
I was focused entirley on improving an article until you started making disruptive edits, posting inappropriate warnings and undertaking an edit war. You are strongly advised to stop insulting people in edit summaries, stop reverting good edits, stop posting inappropriate warnings to others and stop edit waring. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.94.27.116 (talk) 23:26, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

Just a note

Hey there, I was anti-vandalism patrolling when I happened to come across the edits at Issam Fares as well as the discussion with the involved IP editor. As an uninvolved party who happened to come across this by accident, I left them this note on their talkpage to let them know that their incivility towards you is not acceptable behavior here (or anywhere for that matter), and so that they could get a better understanding as to why this incident happened, so that they can understand that you meant no ill-will towards their edits and that it was just a simple misunderstanding.

Incidents like these, are exactly why I choose not to use a registered Wikipedia account when anti-vandalism patrolling, as the automated tools like Huggle can lead to some 'trigger-happy' moments where you are reverting edits that aren't necessarily vandalism, but only because they came up in the live feed/edit filter log as disruptive. As someone who has taken part in Wikipedia anti-vandalism patrolling since 2015, I've seen some of the most experienced anti-vandal fighters get sternly warned or even blocked by admins about the usage of anti-vandalism tools like Huggle.

I saw that you commented at WP:ANI that you would be taking a break from anti-vandalism patrolling. I regularly come across your anti-vandalism work and your reports at WP:AIV and just thought I'd let you know that your work here is sincerely appreciated, and I really do hope that you don't let this get the best of you, and return to anti-vandalism patrolling soon. :-) 73.67.145.30 (talk) 06:01, 17 May 2023 (UTC)
