Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Miss Universe Guyana edit

Hi Yoshi! The article you cited is a smear campaign that was launched against Hardat written by unqualified journalists of the country who were rivals of Hardat, The Miss Universe Org had made a statement to the press regarding it however you are free to reach out to them again for it. I will look for the television segment where it was mentioned when they reached out to the MUO for comment. Factcheckny (talk) 22:31, 14 June 2023 Factcheckny (talk) 22:31, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

I have statistics to back up my edits and would like help with inputing them into the wiki page. Also the statistics that you rolled back to are incorrect and out of date. CM12312 (talk) 04:10, 18 June 2023 (UTC)

Signature color

Hi there :). I noticed that your signature colour doesn't meet the minimum contrast ratio per MOS:ONWHITE. Lightgreen has a contrast of 1.42:1, whereas bolded text should have a contrast of at least 3:1, and non-bolded text 4.5:1. Would you be willing to change it to a darker colour? Thanks! —Femke 🐦 (talk) 11:21, 18 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi there Femke, thank you for contacting the Yoshi24517 support desk. Sorry, I wanted to do that :P I see your concerns, I'm just concerned that since my favorite color is lime green, there's no feasible colors that would help me out in this situation. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Online) 18:26, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
EDIT: I may have just found one, going off of this page. See this diff for proof I changed it: [1]. Hope this is better. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Online) 18:34, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
Very much appreciated! This should be much easier to read for those with uncollaborative eyes :). —Femke 🐦 (talk) 18:06, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

"Caught by"

Re [2], "caught by" means who was the catcher. Not who made the last out (?). DatGuyTalkContribs 04:34, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

DatGuy We should probably change it instead of "Caught by" to "Catcher" to avoid confusion, like what I had. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Online) 04:39, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
"Caught by" is fairly common baseball terminology, as in "the game was caught by Kyle Higashioka." I'd say it fits under the context. DatGuyTalkContribs 04:43, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
I'm probably a boomer, I've never heard it called that way, and if I did, I'd think of it as the ball was caught by. The more you know. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Online) 04:46, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

Study invitation for anti-vandalism patrollers

Hi @Yoshi24517, thanks for patrolling edits and reverting vandalism! I wonder if you are interested in our ongoing study for patrollers. The study aims to evaluate AI models that power recent change filters, Huggle, SWViewer, and many other anti-vandal tools. Your feedback can be really helpful! If you're interested, please check out our recruitment page for more information. Thank you for your consideration! Tzusheng (talk) 01:34, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

IP vandal from Italy

Hello, Yoshi24517,

If you run into an IP vandal like the one a few hours ago that keeps jumping IP numbers but vandalizes the same pages, please report them to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism so that they can be blocked and you don't end up in an edit war where they vandalize and then you revert the vandalism over and over again. Your anti-vandalism work is appreciated but it seems like a lot of work on your part. Thank you for all of your contributions to the project. Liz Read! Talk! 01:26, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

Hey Liz! Thanks for the heads up. I’m not sure which vandal you are referring to, but I assume the Tokelau vandal one. Either way, they were on the 5.77 range, which I did report: [3], and then they switched to the 176.62 range, which I also reported: [4]. Just wanted to make you aware. It’s probably because maybe I’m too lenient, I usually let it go 5 instances of vandalism before a Huggle auto-report (If you revert and warn on an edit when they already have a level 4 warning, it gets auto reported to AIV.) I usually go all the way on IPs because I don’t want the reports to get declined for not enough warnings given. In addition, most if not all the time, the vandals will keep editing even after being reported, so when an admin isn’t looking at AIV at the time and theres a delay, I have to keep watching the pages. Hope this explains everything! Yoshi24517 (mobile) (talk) (Online) 02:08, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

Change the name of village

The name of this village has been officially changed from Tanban to Tanb e Parsan. For this, there are documents written in Persian and you should read it. WikiCup 2023 July newsletter

The third round of the 2023 WikiCup has come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 175 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

Contestants achieved 11 featured articles, 2 featured lists, 47 good articles, 72 featured or good article reviews, over 100 DYKs and 40 ITN appearances. As always, any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 (talk) and Cwmhiraeth (talk). Not vandalism

FYI this isn't vandalism -- the inline sources verify that it is her. The Depths of Wikipedia article which the IP is linking isn't about her, but (whatever its flaws) it seems to be a good-faith edit. Giraffer (talk·contribs) 19:36, 10 July 2023 (UTC)

Giraffer - Thanks for the heads up, but I already had reported it to AIV just seconds before your notification. I will leave it there to see if any admin wants to deal with it though. Who knows, we could be totally wrong. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Online) 19:44, 10 July 2023 (UTC)

Sicilians

Hello Mr Yoshi24517, as you might have been able to notice currently the page Sicilians has been edited several times so as to remove part of the section talking about the language, despite it having several sources.
By personal preference, I am not a registered Wikipedia user and, not being accustomed to the English-language wiki, I thought it would be preferable to contact a user who had already restored the page in question (I would also like to make it clear that I do not wish to get involved in an edit war).
I suspect that the user Telleroftruth2000, who had already removed parts concerning pages with Sicilian people as topic and had been warned by user Adakiko, is now editing under the username of Legal History Expert making more or less the same edits.
I genuinely hope that we may find a solution to this so that these tendentious edits may stop.
Apologies for the lengthy message, should my English not be able to convey the case properly, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Best regards 101.56.85.194 (talk) 13:31, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

change the village name in wikipedia and google maps

The name of our village has been officially changed, its documents are available, how can I change its name in Google Map and wikipedia? Ali moradi85 (talk) 10:56, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

Any question about how to change its name in Google Maps is not germane to Wikipedia. You will need to contact Google for that, and I would not expect speedy results. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v Source assessment notes 15:52, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

Links to draft articles

Please do not mend links to draft articles, as you did at Kane Brown. Such links should be removed, as a draft is not ready for the main article space, and links from articles should not go to a draft. Such links are contrary to the Manual of Style
The warning template to leave for editors adding such links is {{subst:uw-draft-link|articletitle}} Many thanks - Arjayay (talk) 20:09, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

Frome Clay

Hi Yoshi, I'm new to editing Wikipedia, so please excuse my manner. I'm a keen geologist and noticed the Frome Clay is shown on the map in Herts/Essex. Of course it is around Frome in Somerset. I would appreciate it if you could change the map or delete it. Best wishes, Micraster 78.151.56.203 (talk) 19:20, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

Your best bet, would be to find the correct latitude and longitude (as that is what the template goes off of), and update the template accordingly, as long as you have a reliable source to back up that location. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Very Busy) 19:22, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
I found the coordinates for Frome, Somerset and entered them on the page. The dot is now in the right place on the map. But there is an error message, which I don't understand: Coordinates: longitude degrees < 0 with hemisphere flag (#coordinates:) invalid longitude.
I can't find any geological formations in Wikipedia with a map showing their location. This map with a single dot gives the wrong impression that the Frome Clay is only found at that one location. In fact, as the text explains, it is found as far away as Dorset and Bucks. I think it would be better to remove the map. Micraster 78.151.56.203 (talk) 14:45, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
I’ll have a look when I get a chance, don’t delete the map entirely, I’ll have a look when I can. Thanks. Yoshi24517 (mobile) (talk) (Very Busy) 17:16, 18 July 2023 (UTC)

"Yes, and I will continue to edit war" - Eryk Wdowiak

I notice you haven't commented on that user's page despite their openly admitting to edit warring on the page. I would venture that this is simply an oversight on your part, as you didn't really read the talk page before jumping in. I would hope that it isn't an issue of bias toward someone with an account over someone without as that would be against the rules. 2600:8805:A15:C200:DC8B:66C8:40E6:35C1 (talk) 18:51, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

Isn't that a good thing? We can't have libelious statements, so taking them out is a good thing. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Very Busy) 18:57, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
Sorry, edit warring in. Just a minor mistake. 2600:8805:A15:C200:DC8B:66C8:40E6:35C1 (talk) 18:58, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
Lemme reread the article again, and make sure I have everything correct. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Very Busy) 18:59, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
I would focus on the comments on the talk page from Eryk. He clearly has a dog in this fight, calling the reporters actions "contemptible" and "unacceptable" - I'm simply trying to create an accurate entry. His implications, however much he believes them, that the reporters harassed Ms Rodriguez are entirely without basis. I asked him repeatedly to try to reach a consensus with me on the page and he point blank refused. 2600:8805:A15:C200:DC8B:66C8:40E6:35C1 (talk) 19:00, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

I don't see how that is libelious, it is talking about a doorbell. I do think that ring doesn't need to be said 3 times though. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Very Busy) 19:13, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
I agree, and I removed it, and then it was repeatedly added back. It is absolutely libelous to imply the reporters harassed someone by trying to seek comment about a newsworthy event involved that person. 2600:8805:A15:C200:DC8B:66C8:40E6:35C1 (talk) 19:15, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

It seems like at this point you understand what I'm trying to show you and the specific formatting isn't important. Thank you for the information for the future, but for now, what is your reaction to Eryk edit warring in libel about the reporters? 2600:8805:A15:C200:DC8B:66C8:40E6:35C1 (talk) 19:27, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
Like I said earlier, if he is trying to remove libelious information, he is allowed to, and it doesn't count as edit warring. I do think the stuff he was adding back in, is not libelious in any way as it is talking about a doorbell. Likewise, I agree with you that "ring" only needs to be said once. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Very Busy) 19:29, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
He's trying to ADD libelous information. Again, he is putting libelous information about the reporters harassing the fired professor. Just to emphasize, he was ADD information to the article that was libelous to the reporters.
He is talking about the actions of the reporters, not "a doorbell" - and he adding in the libel and the ring ring ring statement multiple times. You're just about to go post a warning about edit warring on his page, correct? 2600:8805:A15:C200:DC8B:66C8:40E6:35C1 (talk) 19:31, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

It seems he is Involved to be honest. I'm just trying to make an accurate page that doesn't read like a child wrote it. 2600:8805:A15:C200:DC8B:66C8:40E6:35C1 (talk) 19:34, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
Yeah I understand, but theres nothing you can really do now, as you now have to be autoconfirmed (and registered) to edit the page now. I just want to be done talking about this, I'm exhausted from this conversation. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Very Busy) 19:35, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
You started this conversation and then openly stated you hadn't even read the page before doing so. I'll gladly register and continue to make sure he doesn't insert more libel about the reporters, since that isn't a concern of yours it seems. 2600:8805:A15:C200:DC8B:66C8:40E6:35C1 (talk) 19:38, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
Also another note, nothing else needs to be done, the page was protected. So I guess we can stop worrying about this. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Very Busy) 19:23, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
I mean, it just seems really odd that you zeroed in on the accurate description of the former professor as disgraced, which just means having lost a positon of power, and didn't notice the repeated attempt to insert a badly worded bit of libel about some reporters. 2600:8805:A15:C200:DC8B:66C8:40E6:35C1 (talk) 19:24, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

ERROR Brother Speed Motorcycle Club

This information is complete fiction. Can you show me from where it is being sourced?

During the 1970s, the Brother Speed in Boise applied to the Oakland, California chapter of the Hells Angels for permission to join the Angels. The Oakland club sent a representative to Idaho to assess the Brother Speed's suitability for membership, who recommended that the Brothers not be accepted into the Hells Angels. The reason why the Brother Speed was denied membership in the Hells Angels is unknown.

The Brother Speed has allegedly associated with the Hells Angels, the Outsiders, and the Devils Breed in order to acquire precursor chemicals used in the manufacture of methamphetamine. The Brother Speed chapter in Reno, Nevada, in collusion with the Hells Angels' Sacramento, California chapter and California Nomads chapter, has reportedly used twin-engine airplanes to transport drugs between northern California and Nevada. The Brothers Speed in Idaho have allegedly been involved in sending methamphetamine, sealed inside the frames of motorcycles, to the Rebels in Sydney, Australia.

Fearing that their operations would be taken over by the Hells Angels, the Brother Speed strengthened by beginning an alliance with the Bandidos of Texas in the early 1990s. The club has purchased illegal weapons from members of the Aryan Nations in northern Idaho. Brother Speed members have also assembled fully-automatic stun guns after ordering parts.

You and Relinus restored content that violated the BLP policy. DatGuyTalkContribs 21:47, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
I mean, my apologies if I did, I think I know what you are talking about, I was trying to get the legal threat off the page, and it looked like somebody was trying to delete cited content. I would like to look at the content that I restored, so I can see what I restored, but I can't see it right now. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Very Busy) 21:51, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
I can't really post the deleted content, but it was a paragraph about alleged legal issues cited to a tweet, "mugshots.com", and a court filing. DatGuyTalkContribs 22:02, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

Hello Sir/Ma'am. I would like to know how can we create a new page on Wikipedia. For reference, I want to make a Wikipedia page for a Sector in Noida, I have got all the text written already but I don't know how to make a new page. I would love to hear back from you. Thank you. --Shivamkhaari (talk) 17:23, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi! I took a look at your sandbox (I assume that is where the text is), but after taking a quick look, there are no references. If you can find a single reference or two, that will help, and then I can explain further. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Very Busy) 18:13, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

Starlighsky, It basically means hiding a certain revision, edit summary or username from public view, visible to only administrators in the case of revisiondeletion, or revdel, or in more severe cases a small number of trusted users called oversighters. You could delete your comments, but it would still be visible in the page history. That's why I suggested that. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Very Busy) 21:15, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

Question from Juancrl19 on User:Juancrl19 (13:15, 8 August 2023)

Hi, I tried to upload my User page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Juancrl19 to main wikipedia, unfortuntelly it has been speedy deleted, I dont' know why. I included references and am also willing to change passages of the text that don't fit wikipedia's guidlines - I just don't know where exactly the problem is. Should I try to let it be reviewed in my Sandbox again? thx --Juancrl19 (talk) 13:15, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi Juancrl19, I think the page you are trying to create exists already at Johannes Winkler (composer). I took a look at the warnings on your talk page. I have to ask, what is your connection to Johannes Winkler? This is so we can gauge if you have a conflict of interest about the subject. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Very Busy) 18:24, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

Hello I just received a message to say you removed an external link to the Amaza Lee Meredith wiki page. I believe the link I added is appropriate for the page and I disagree with your removing it. 72.43.146.62 (talk) 18:12, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

You and one other person have been trying to add the same link, and the other person was reverted (and blocked) for it too. It looks like you and the other user are the same person. It's not appropriate to add this link. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Very Busy) 18:16, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Why is it not appropriate? 72.43.146.62 (talk) 18:18, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
It's more like a blog, and not a reliable source. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Very Busy) 18:19, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
It is not a blog it is scholarly website edited by professors from Columbia University. It is also used for educational purposes in architecture schools and has been nominated for webby awards.
I disagree with your opinion, the link is appropriate because it provides reviewed scholarly biographical information on the subject. 72.43.146.62 (talk) 18:21, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
I would like to you to explain why you think it is not a reliable source. 72.43.146.62 (talk) 18:22, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
I will leave it on the page, but if somebody else removes it, you would have to go to the talk page, because then multiple editors would disagree with you adding it. If that does happen though, do not readd it back, otherwise you would be edit warring and subject to being blocked. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Very Busy) 18:27, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Question from Information.metl (08:11, 15 September 2023)

Hello Yoshi24517,

I hope this message finds you well.

I am a new Wikipedia contributor and was wondering if you could give me some guidance for successfully updating an article. I understand that the process is highly technical in terms of formatting, COI, and citations, among other things. What recommendations do you have to make the editing process as smooth as possible for both me and the editor revising my changes?

Thank you for your help.

P.S. I listened to last Sunday's episode of "The Daily" which detailed the changing roles of Wiki Editors in the age of AI and Chat GPT. I so admire the diligent effort you and other editors have continued to put in (with no compensation!) for the sake of a more transparent and equitable information landscape. --Information.metl (talk) 08:11, 15 September 2023 (UTC)

Hello Information.metl, and thanks for the greeting! Apologies for getting to you later than normal, I live on the west coast in America, so time zones.
There are many things that can be done! If you aren't very good at content creation, you can do other things like typos and copyediting. This page is a good starting point for editors. If you want to add some updates to an article, make sure you research them and provide reliable sources about what you found. Then, you can use something like this page to help with referencing, as well as reading this policy about reliable sources.
Moving on to some of the other things you mentioned, for formatting, we have a Manual of Style guideline, that all editors should follow. It can be found here at WP:MOS. Give that a read, it'll explain everything the pretty much need to know about formatting everything correctly according to policy. Regarding conflict of interest, it only is a problem if you decided to edit an article about a subject that is in any way related to you, like relative, employer, friend, etc. Those types of people can be biased towards the subject, and may not agree with everything that is on the article page at the time. Wikipedia has a neutral point of view policy where we strive to keep everything in a neutral tone, without any bias. The relevant conflict of interest policy is here, so feel free to peruse that at your leisure. Citations, I have gone over above pretty much already.
I hope this helps you out! Sorry for the information overload, I know there is a lot here, but I wanted to go over everything you asked me about. That being said, let me know if you have any questions, or you can ask at the teahouse, a place for newer editors to ask questions about editing. Happy editing, and good luck! Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Online) 19:25, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
Yoshi24517,
Thank you for your thoughtful and thorough response! The resources you shared are spot on.
I'm not sure if you're able to guide me through a specific edit, but I may as well ask for help. This community seems to be full of enthusiastic mentors and I welcome any and all assistance eagerly!
The situation: I work for MeTL Group, a homegrown Tanzanian trading company. MeTL CEO Mo Dewji has a Wikipedia page that has not been updated to reflect current (verifiable) figures regarding company profits, employees, and personal net worth. There is also very little information about the Mo Dewji Foundation (under the "Philanthropy" heading), one of the most important parts of Mo's legacy. I'm wondering if there's a way to update the numbers and "Philanthropy" section to reflect an up-to-date version of reality. I'm not trying to rewrite any historical narrative, just trying to paint a picture founded in reality. These changes are pretty minor, but past attempts have been rejected.
I understand the COI guidelines and think that they're perhaps the most important piece of regulation in place for keeping Wikipedia accountable and transparent. However, I think that the lack of accurate and up-to-date information on Mr. Dewji's page doesn't reflect Wikipedia's standard for truth and relevance.
I'm wondering if the best way to go about making edits on this specific page is to make those edits myself following meticulous COI and citation protocol, or to ask for help from the Wikipedia editor community to please review the page and make those changes as an unaffiliated third party.
If you are reading this and have any interest, please do give the page a look over. It is in desperate need of an update and your help will be much appreciated.
Thanks again. Information.metl (talk) 07:27, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
Hello Information.metl,
Now that you mention that, I would highly recommend you get a username change, because your username could be construed as a role account for your organization you work for. We don't allow that, so I would recommend you get a username that represents yourself. Accounts are only allowed to be used by one person so that's why we have that policy. Since you will indeed have a conflict of interest with the subject of the article in question, I would also recommend that you disclose your COI as well on your userpage. The relevant policy can be found here. The COI guideline says the same thing. This is mandatory, as is required by the Wikimedia Foundation. Then I suggest you suggest your edits on the talk page of the article, and try to get consensus for them. Try not to edit the article directly unless you have the relevant consensus for your edits. Make sure you have reliable sources to back up your claims. Though I recommend your first priority should be to change your username. Hope this helps! Your edits to Bridge Investment Grp

Hi there! I referenced the company's 10-K filing to simplify the official firm's history. The article as it was written was promoting a singular founder in a way that is misleading about his involvement - hope you agree with my logic here. Thanks! 432cgb (talk) 13:50, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

Gov't documents and anything written/commissioned by the company itself are primary sources and should only be used to cite things no reasonable person could dispute. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v Source assessment notes 15:23, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
The article is written from the perspective of a person who is inaccurately describing himself as a co-founder. The source is from said person's personal website, so it is biased. 432cgb (talk) 15:25, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

Hello. I made some changes (wife and kid’s names) to my brother-in-law’s page, but it keeps getting deleted. I received a message about citing sources, but I’M the source. His wife is my sister. How to create a Wikipedia page? --Hasasfgh (talk) 09:46, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello Hasasfgh, and welcome to Wikipedia. The best way to create a new article, is to create it in your sandbox first, and add references and stuff to it, while you work on it. It's not a good idea to place it in article space immediately, because depending on what you write, it could be subject to deletion for many reasons. This article can explain how to write an article. WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Steve Farley

Hi Yoshi24517,

Thanks for patrolling recent changes. Regarding Special:Diff/1179535436, unless there are more reliable sources you had already been aware of, 38 seconds are unlikely to be sufficient to reach a conclusion strong enough to overcome WP:BLPRESTORE.

From what I can see, the restored statement is not supported by its source, so I have removed it for now.

Best regards,

Thank you ToBeFree for the heads up. Appreciate it as always. Yoshi24517 (Chat) (Online) 21:47, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
